A word from Lüke San Antonio
San Antonio is now home to acclaimed Chef John Besh’s restaurant, Lüke, on the city's famed Riverwalk, Besh's first restaurant outside of his home state of Louisiana. The casual chic bistro features a menu of authentic Old World cuisine, combining classic German and French cooking techniques served in a warm and inviting space of stylish vintage interior, situated in San Antonio's popular downtown district.

At the helm of the kitchen of Lüke is Executive Chef John Russ, born and raised in New Orleans. At Restaurant August, Chef Russ began to form the relationship with John Besh and he learned the importance of forming relationships with farmers and fisherman, which would later be reinforced by his time working on farms in Alabama, New Hampshire, New York and Maryland. Chef Russ returned to the Besh Restaurant Group as Chef de Cuisine on the invitation of Chef Besh.

To complement its cuisine, Lüke offers an extensive wine list and beer selection.

The food was definitely tasty. The oysters very fresh, and the drum special well prepared. However, the drinks came out staggered too much apart. One had to ask for iced tea as it never came, and then had to ask for bread and butter before entrees would have been finished. Only our birthday person was asked if she wanted desert, and no inquiry by our server as to whether we wanted coffee or after dinner drinks. All in all the service was off just enough at every stage to be noticed, which is definitely not what you want. The noise level was also fairly high, but I suspect the outdoor patio would have been okay on that note.

This was my third visit to Luke and it was a disappointment. The service was slow and a little disorganized to start. After waiting about 15 minutes to place a drink order, our waiter returned to tell us they were out of sparkling water. The food was good, but not up to the standard that I had experienced in the past and definitely not what you'd expect from a John Besh establishment. Our waiter eventually came around and was much more attentive after we placed out initial orders.

Mr. Besh would had been disappointed as well. It being Spurs weekend, I can understand the excitement akin to a sports bar rather than a fine dining establishment. There was food on the floor next to our table. A banana peel slipping accident waiting to happen. Our server was forewarned and the mess was promptly removed. I assume from a previous diner. Waited too long for my cocktail. My white wine was served in a dirty wine glass(looked like red wine). The chef saturated my seafood entre with too much salt. It's seafood! Suffice it to say, that will be my last dining experience at Luke's.

I keep going back to this restaurant for the food. It is outstanding. What keeps me saying I won't go back is the lack of good service. Our waiter was friendly and insisted on cocktails. We agreed. It took over 22 minutes for them to arrive at our table after ordering. We were not offered break nor water during that wait. We insisted on ordering once he returned with the drinks. The oysters arrived promptly. Still no bread. Our entrees arrived about 10 minutes after our oysters were cleared from the table. I ordered a glass of wine and my guests order another cocktail. Again, we were finished with our meals when the drinks arrived back. We had to ask for our serves multiple times. What is it with this place?

Being from Louisiana and having been to John Besh's restaurants in New Orleans, we had high expectations for our dinner. First, it was 8:00 on a Friday night and we felt like we were at an 'early bird special'. Older crowd and pretty empty. The wine list is short but down good selections. The atmosphere was nice. The waiter was a little pushy... Asking us if we wanted to order a second bottle of wine before the first was even finished. The food was the big disappointment... We got the grilled oysters and there was so much breeding packed on top you couldn't taste anything else. Our main courses were fresh and good pairings but so over salted that we couldn't even finish. Dessert was delicious and coffee high quality. Besh can do better.

I don't know if this was just an off night. This was a real disappointment after we just had a wonderful dining experience in MISSION, TX the night before! Although, the quail starter was pretty good. Particularly, we had informed the waitress that the shrimp that was in the Grande Seafood Tower was disappointing.

I had bam bam shrimp which was delicious, I loved it. I also had the crab and avocado salad which was entirely avocado and crab which I liked. It was very good but could have used a splash of lemon & some salt in the avocado, but the diner can do that I guess. My husband had the Luke salad which was overdressed, and the shrimp étouffée that he thought was "okay", wasn't bad, but just sort of run of the mill. Seemed overpriced to him since there was nothing outstanding about it. Overall we did like the restaurant. We won't be rushing back, but won't avoid it either. Had a great waitress!

This was our first visit to this restaurant, and we will definitely be going back. The food and the cocktails were excellent. Our waiter, Travis, was very informative when we had questions about a few items. As we walked through the restaurant on our way to the patio, we noticed it was very noisy, but the patio was quiet and scenic. We enjoyed our view of a quiet part of the River Walk and the bustle on East Houston street--nice combo of urban and scenic dining. Really glad we tried this place!

My fiance and I were lucky enough to get the last table outside on the patio, and it was a beautiful night to eat outside. The service was a little slow, but we didn't mind because we wanted to linger at dinner anyway. The ceviche appetizer is out of this world, so good! We were then a little let down when our entrees came; the crawfish gnocchi dish had an excellent flavor but was barely lukewarm, and the mussels weren't anything to write home about either. Overall, we would recommend Luke.
