We ordered seared scallops and thinly sliced, marinated steak plate from the Tapas menu. The scallops had a medium sear to them with a nice taste of the butter they were cooked in. My steak was very tender and similarly marinated so not an overpowering taste, just enough to enhance the flavor of the meat. Maine courses were paella with chourico, mussels, clams, and saffron rice. It was in a flavorful broth that didn't drown the ingredients but fused with the rice and proteins equally. My dish, braised short rib with mashed potatoes, and kale. The meat was flavorful, tender, and extremely delicious. The portion was enough so I took nearly half of my meal home. Great service, attentive without the server hovering.

The atmosphere at Local 188 is really quite artsy, comfortable and attractive. After perusing the menu, we decided to go with tapas and small plates. 5 tapas was more than enough for the 2 of us and we had leftovers. My husband ordered a lemon ginger drink that was out of this world. My only criticism is that the tapas almost all came out at the same time. We both absolutely loved the fish cakes. The flat bread with humus and the olives were great. I loved the mushroom and almond sauté, but my husband did not. My husband loved the gnocchi, but I found the sauce a bit spicy, although the kale on the side was yummy. For desert we shared the dark chocolate panna cota - so rich we could not finish it between the two of us. We'll be back!

My wife and I went to Local 188 about a month ago and could not stop raving about it. So much so that when we had an opportunity to get a sitter I immediately thought of the restaurant again. This time the food was not good and the service was slow. The appetizer of clams had sand and broken shells in it and the clams were over cooked. They did replace the clams with a mussel dish which was very good. However, the main course meals were salty and overcooked as well. It did not appear as though anyone took the time to taste anything before it headed out to tables. We were offered dessert on the house but at that point we were not looking to get anything else to eat there. I would recommend the restaurant for the ambience but not the food.

menu eclectic, check out on line. olives (huge bowl $5) delicious; naan flatbread w/garlic hummus soooo good (enogh for 6/share) beet salad w/smoked gouda was outstaneding; meatballs (3 large ones) in fresh marinara were excellent. hazelnut cake w/expresso ice cream and chocolate squiggle was full of nuts and hazelnut flabor. Service - excellent. We ate at the 'biggies' on this trip to Portland but this one was a very pleasant surprise. The place is big, noisy and packed--and with very good reason. A real treat! Kath, our server, was terrific-very attentive. This is a special place where creativity and culinary expertise are evident in every dish. Wish we had more time to return and try all the other dishes on their menu.

I had the beef rib(s), an enormous size rib with plenty of extremely tender flavorful meat. But what I would return for is the tapas plate of oyster mushrooms. Very unusual and lovely!

We had been wanting to eat here for a long time and we weren't disappointed. The beer/cocktail list provided plenty of choices and our server was great providing recommendations and samples. The scallop appetizer was melt in your mouth delicious and the scallops were cooked perfectly. My husbands meal was a bit over salted but still tasty. My highlight was the pepper almond sauce that was served with the hake. I could have eaten a bowl of that by itself! We look forward to not waiting so long to eat there again.

The service was wonderful. The setting was very nice, welcoming and fun, not fancy but real. We were given a recommendation from a local we met earlier in the day as her go to restaurant for dinner. We are visiting from Tampa, Florida looking for we're the locals eat and went with it. A great local, real deal Portland neighborhood restaurant I'm sure. However, what we ordered was pretty much the worst representation of what Portland has to offer.

The waitstaff was very attentive; never pushy (we enjoyed dinner over an hour and a half; and, we will be pleased to return in the future.

Pleasant ambiance though I sat waiting for my companion for a long time before a waitress Evan glanced in my direction to see if I'd like a drink. WE HAD THE HUMUS AND FLATBREAD WHICH WAS EXCELLENT ALONG WITH A GREAT HOUSE PAELLA AND WONDERFUL WILD SALMON. THE ROOM IS A BIT DISJOINTED BETWEEN THE BAR, COUCHES AND KITCHEN THAT IS VISIBLE BUT NOT PART OF THE ROOM. ONCE OUR SERVER LEFT US, IT SEEMED ALMOST ACCIDENTAL THAT WE COULD ASK FOR SOMETHING ELSE - LIKE WAITING FOR A BUS. HOWEVER, THE FOOD IS INVENTIVE, GREAT COMBINATIONS OF SEASONING AND SIDE DISHES. IT IS A DIFFICULT PLACE TO HAVE A CONVERSATION BUT FOR FOOD AND DRINK - ITS A GREAT EXPERIENCE.

I've been coming to this restaurant since I moved here a little over a year ago and have loved it from day one. It doesn't matter if your party is small or large: the service is always excellent, the food phenomenal, and the cocktails interesting and tasty without veering off into novelty territory. Both their brunch and dinner is amazing...one of my favorite destinations for fish, although the braised short rib my boyfriend had this time around was the best either of us had ever tasted. I would not recommend this place for vegans, but they were accommodating for the needs of those in our party who decline to eat meat or dairy.

Vacationing in Portland, visited on recommendation from several folks. Everything about our experience was all over the map: appetizers were meh. The bar took forever to come up with our drinks (sangria and a beer on tap - not exactly time consuming or even requiring much effort) - arriving after the appetizers. Same for the second round, incidentally. However, the main course - gnocchi - was sensational ... the single, but stunning, hit of the evening. Feels like the place hasn't figured out its rhythm yet, and in Portland, where the food scene is so strong, there are better choices.,

It's difficult to come up with new insights about a restaurant that I've dined at several times. I think that's the thing to take from this review, that I continue to choose Local 188 when I could go elsewhere. The food is always outstanding. The service is good and I enjoy the vibe. This last visit was a little difficult for the first half hour as there were screaming children on opposite sides of the room. I'm glad a restaurant that I enjoy is being supported but I'll never understand why parents bring their children to an adult restaurant.

The Service was great as well as the selections of choices and specials. We enjoyed our meal, and drinks. We had a seat by the windows and near the front door so people watching was wonderful. The only downside was the volume level, this made hearing our server describe the specials difficult and our own conversations a bit strained. I would suggest a bit of accoustic material well placed on the ceiling to reduce the noise and maintain the ambiance. Yes go and enjoy a good foodie meal with the knowledge on a busy night it will be very lively and loud.

At almost 50 per person total, i would expect better service. The waitress kept calling me "honey." Hello-this is not Denny's! The food was delicious. The paella was huge-enough for 2. Hummus and Naan appetizer was wonderful. Hummus tasted like it had been made 5 minutes before it was served-yum! The only reason I would not go back-the server. She was a bit edgy and rude. The icing on the cake was that she kept calling me "honey." I am not old....so, unsure why she would say that to a middle aged woman. Weird service for sure.

We have dined here twice with another couple. The first time we had a tapas meal that we all enjoyed- several of the dishes were excellent. The second time some of us had meals and others had the tapas but the food was not nearly as good, it tended to be unseasoned and the tortilla dish was quite dry and lacking in flavor. The soup, and the mussels were good but the chicken livers and the naan bread did not compare to the first time we ate them.

Everything our party of four ordered was delicious, from homemade pickles, to soups, to salads and olives. The wine list is excellent as well as the beers on tap and the cocktails. Our main dishes were outstanding. I highly recommend anyone with a good palate give it a try. Another of Portland's great dining experiences not to be missed.
