The service was very good and the meal was fantastic. My wife and I shared a nice bottle of Pinot from one of our favorite Oregon vineyards (seeing that they had Torii Mor on the wine list was a fantastic surprise). Our only complaint is that the noise level was very loud...making it almost impossible to have a conversation without feeling like we were shouting across the table. (Note to the owners, a few absorptive surfaces would go a long way to improving the noise levels without taking away from the vibrancy of the space!) That said, my wife and I enjoyed our meal so much that we're sure to be back. (Helpful Hint: Order the brownies but rather than getting the milk that comes with it order a glass of port...great way to end the meal)

Not good. Horrible service, nobody came to our table for 15 minutes. The ambiance, very poor, not warm, or welcoming. If you do go and eat, have one of the large salads and the short ribs. The short ribs are by far the best item on the menu. The quail, horrible. We debated about leaving before our server came over, and I wish we had.

We had dinner at Local 188 before a show at One Longfellow a half block away. The atmosphere is casual/relaxed, a large space with well spaced tables. While there is noise thanks to the open spaces and hard surfaces, it is not so intrusive as to make conversation impossible. Service was friendly, informative and timely. Most important, the food was terrific. The salads were fresh and flavorful and the paella was spectacular. This was our first visit to Local 188, and we will be back.

On a group trip to Portland this place was highly recommended. It was a lot of fun. Some of the food was just good and some was excellent. It's neat place, great for all people. Has a very eclectic feel... miss matched but matched. It's a big open room so it does get loud. We had a table of 6 and turn the height of dinner it was hard to hear each other at times.

First time here not knowing much about the place, and we had a fabulous experience and were pleasantly surprised with the quality and creativeness of the dishes. We started with the most amazing kale and white bean soup, followed by seared dayboat scallops with tarragon aioli, apple matchsticks and lemon confit. This was followed by an exquisite salad made with fresh mixed greens, dried cranberries, pine nuts, and fresh roasted squash - spectacular! Next was sauteed potato gnocci with finely chopped cooked onions, grapes without skins, sprouts, all sittinig atop a cream sauce, with a dollop of some kind of delicious cheese on top. We finished off with the braised short ribs which were so tender they fell off the bone without much effort.

Excellent meal. Server was friendly and attentive, if not an expert on food and wine. Fixed a wine glass problem effectively and cheerfully. List excellent - not too big, with interesting, well-chosen non-standard selections at different price points. Emphasis on southern Europe. Every dish was very good. We shared a mix of smaller tapas-style plates, a salad, and an entree. A couple of things were too heavy on the olive oil and salt for my taste, but that's a quibble. Highlights included the chorizo and poached quail egg crostini, the grilled quail over arugula, and the hangar steak with red quinoa. Room slightly loud. Overall way above expectations.

Friendly, warm waitstaff who cheerfully accommodated special requests for preferred seating and additional delicious sauce to add to entree. Appetizer and entree servings more than ample and plenty to share for two. Thoughtful, creative menu with varied flavor blendings that would satisfy most pallets. The wine list was varied allowing us to select a Spanish white that worked nicely with our meal selections. Very busy even on a Tuesday night in Portland. Thanks 188, Trev and Pam

We went here for my birthday dinner with 7 people. It was very enjoyable. The food was fresh and we enjoyed the variety of tapas and small plates to share. The flavors were good but maybe not as authentically Spanish as some places I have been. Service was good and the food came out quickly. (It was a monday night). The list of Spanish wines by the glass could have been better since my Rioja wasn't that great. The beer list was good. Overall a fun place to go with a group. If the menu changes seasonally, I would like to try it again.

food was excellent. i don't know if our server was new, but it took forever to put in a drink order, and then to get drinks. constant flagging down for water, etc. and when one of us ordered a bottle of wine she brought the bottle with one wine glass, not four for the table. i'd never seen that before. food was excellent. other staff who served food, replaced silverware, etc. seemed to know what they were doing, but our main server, who was very pleasant, was just not attentive and not up to par.

Fantastic mediterranean inspired menu served by friendly staff in a huge, laid back space. The generous portion of house paella was delicious with chicken, chorizo, mussels and shrimp. • Although I knew Paella traditionall
    OpenTable Diner Since 2010
    Dined on 9/4/2010
Although I knew Paella traditionally has seafood in it, the description of a "house" paella and a "seafood" paella made it sound like the "house" paella had only sausage and chicken in it. The waitress didn't elaborate on any ingredients and I didn't think to ask. I ordered the "house" paella and found it full of seafood and the taste of the seafood was so strong, it took over. It didn't jibe with my memory of paella in Spain. However my dinner partner ordered the steak and said it was delicious. Perhaps all the description needs is to say that it combines chicken and sausage with mussels, shrimp, etc.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2011
    Dined on 9/1/2010
A friend and I usually order mussels from newly visited restaurants, and Local 188 WAS at the top of our list for their saffron/tomato/ garlic/cream based mussels served in their former location. Those were the best I have eaten anywhere in Portland. Now, I can say that Local's most recent mussels (spicy tomato base/tiny diced potatoes/garlic/chirorzo/fresh pepper) are my second favorite. So, Local, in our experience, you are holding first and second place for the best mussels in Portland. The rest of the meal was great. It was a very hot night, so we split vanilla and chocolate sorbet with macaroons for dessert - perfect on a hot evening. Our waiter was very congenial, prompt, friendly. Love the atmosphere of 188.

My wife and I were kids-free for the night...a rarity for us, and had heard repeatedly good reviews of this place. We wanted a semi-casual atmosphere, some drinks and tapas...Local 188 delivered all three. Nick, our waiter, masterfully listed the evening's specials which were many and varied...his knowledge of the menu, ingredients, wine pairings, etc. were fantastic. We would (and have) recommended Local 188 to friends and relatives. We will definitely be back.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2011
    Dined on 8/15/2010
The dinner we had ranged from some truly excellent dishes -- especially the bread sprinkled with a lovely EVOO and the pan-fried gnocchi of the day, to very good -- a sauteed mushroom tapas and a blueberry tart,to disappointing -- mussels in a harissa and preserved lemon broth that overpowered the taste of the mussels, which were also overcooked. We very much enjoyed an interesting bottle of Spanish wine from a 12th century grape -- something we had never encountered anywhere else. Our waitperson managed to be pleasantly congenial and informative without being over the top, as sometimes can be the case with friendly staff. She also was very forthright about what she didn't know -- e.g., wines new to the menu.
