The food was absolutely delicious and innovative. A treat from a top chef. Amiance was urban yet casual with seating groups. Boisterously busy yet we could talk to each other easily. Service was great... And did I say the food was unworldly?

We chose Searsucker because it was a new restaurant. We were celebrating our anniversary that night and wanted to try something new in town. This was definitely a happenin' place. The menu was perfect because it was a tapas-like menu, which was great to share and we got to try a lot of different things. The price was reasonable and the ambiance was very hip. We did see a couple famous people there also. The bar area was packed and they had live music which was very enjoyable as well. Overall, we had a great time. I would recommend this place.

The restaurant exuded energy and excitement. A dynamic hostess greeted our party, the wait staff was attentive. The food was good, not great, not exceptional but good. Sometimes chef's end up being too creative for their own good.

    Dined on 8/27/2010
The setup of the new Searsucker restaurant is magnificent. The bar / lounge area is a great place to grab a few beverages and some apps. I was definitely fond of the calamari, it wasn't breaded but grilled just right. The entrées were good and presented nicely with a decent serving. A good place downtown to spend some time for drinks and dinner.

Dinner was good. Our issue was that the first table the hostess tried to seat us at is a small dark table by the kitchen where the wait staff is whizzing in and out of. We had reservations; throughout the night we noticed a couple of parties of two that were seated at what I call "the kitchen table" and quickly asked to be moved. Beware, the first place the hostess will try to seat you is this table.

  • Great experience here - appetizers
    OpenTable Diner Since 2010
    Dined on 8/26/2010
Great experience here - appetizers were fantastic very flavorful - though the menu is hard to decipher for some items and we needed help choosing. Wine was excellent and service very good. My 2 companions had steak which they both said was perfectly cooked and very tender. I had duck - did not like it, too sweet and not what I was expecting. Just then Brian Malarkey arrives and asks about the meal - I explained I was not really enjoying it. He offered to 'change it up' and he did so. Not 5 minutes later I was then re-served with a delicious dish that I enjoyed while my companions were still eating. Would recommend

  • I have worked my entire life

I have worked my entire life in restaurants so you may perceive me as biased. We were greeted by four hostesses (overkill) who were very friendly and took us to our table. It was six on Monday night so the place was maybe 5 percent full. Our high table by the window was nice but the chairs are not comfortable. Our server, Kasey, was lovely, professional and an absolute gem! Her busboy, whose name I did not get, was equally perfect! I will give their service a perfect score! I liked the ambiance, my friend did not. I thought the food was just good, my friend found it mediocre. I want to go back to experience more, friend does not! Wine list is interesting! Odd that a manager never came by to ask how we enjoyed our experience!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2005

I had very high hopes considering how good the food was at Oceanaire but in the end everything feel flat. We had reservations for a Saturday night and we were put at a hightop table right beside the bar. Hightop table are part of the look and feel but we got bumped into several times and people kept asking us if the tables were free. Food was decent but not amazing. Orange in the Brie appetizer was too strong, scallops a little underseasoned and steak OK. Grilled aspargus side was the highlight. The most frustrating was the service. We had a couple of cocktails and then ordered wine to go with our dinner. The wine showed up a good five minutes after we received our main course - an absolute NO NO! Cool scene yes, good dinner no.

Fortunately ate with a group of people that didn't mind sharing or it would have been hard to just choose a couple of items from the very inspired menu. Meal was excellent (the beef cheek was sublime)and the desserts were a perfect ending. My only complaint are the chairs at the 4-seat tables. Very uncomfortable and perhaps a tool used increase the table turn. Surprising miss for such a potentially perfect restaurant.

We decided to try this restaurant based on a recommendation from a waiter early in our San Diego week. Apparently the chef had been on Top Chef Season 3. We didn't realize that the restaurant had just opened July 31. Although there was a little confusion when we arrived the rest of the evening was fun. It has a very trendy atmosphere with a young staff. We really liked our female waiter Michaela. Her recommendations for wine, spicy shrimp & grits appetizer, the watermelon salad, the Alaskan salmon and the sundae dessert were all delicious. It was a Saturday night and although the place was packed the service was good.

The food was delicious, especially the duck fat fries and the cream cheese frosting on the red velvet cake. The service was pretty slow, though and a little inconsistent. We got our starters before our wine and then it took a long time to get our mains. This place is definitely a hotspot, with the bar jammed pack by nine. Overall very good.

Food quality was good and tabler server excellent. The rest of the staff was marginal and seemed more about themselves than the customer experience. Reservation on OpenTable was easy and quick but seating service at the restaurant was abysmal. Restaurant was nearly empty and requested a low table and after 10 min of standing and waiting by the original table just gave in a sat at the high top. Limited wine selection.

The menu was playful & creative. There was enough variety to accommodate anyone from a discerning palate to a more adventurous one. The drinks were phenomenal! My favorite was the Peter Rabbit (zesty & refreshing). My favorite was the mushroom w/ truffle oil and burrata. The warmth of the mushrooms slightly melted the burrata and coated the mushroom beautifully. The octopus had a hint of saffron, which was a nice play on Spanish flavors. The "eggs & bacon" was a gourmet take on the traditional dish (Chef uses pork belly instead and it was almost like eggs benedict without the English muffin). Our server Michaela was excellent. She was genuinely friendly and knowledgeable on the menu and was able to guide as in the right direction.

Outstanding addition to the Gaslamp; will be a top contender for Best New Restaurant of 2010. Hip vibe; friendly service; efficient kitchen; outstanding flavors; very reasonable prices. Alcohol was much more expensive than the food ($12 for cocktails, $10-15 for a glass of wine) but the quality was quite good so I minded less than if it was overpriced for boring/bad drinks. Mushroom/truffles/burrata, Peter Rabbit cocktail, and chicken dish were some of the standouts. Much better than other places in the neighborhood; can't wait to go back! (fun too to watch Brian Malarkey expediting and guiding his cooks!)

    Dined on 8/14/2010
After all the exposure/hype that this restaurant received prior to opening, I was strongly looking forward to a great culinary experience. Unfortunately I found the food be very average. The ambiance is great and the service was very good but frankly I expected more from the meal. The rest of my party also rated the food good but very average. I actually had another reservation in two weeks that I canceled based on my disappointment with my meal. As an aside, I found it very strange that Searsucker does not think that it needs signage to identify the restaurant. This may be avant garde from their perspective but it is extremely inconvenient when people are trying to find the restaurant.

The restaurant really knows how to get the best out of each dish and each one really shined. We had the opah and the crab cake, they were stunning. Searsucker is the place to be in San Diego. It was lots of fun. The place is lively, but way too noisy. I was with a party of 6 and we had a table against a wall, which was probably the quietest spot in the place. But, it was very hard to have a conversation. Given Brian Malarkey's reputation (I am a Top Chef fan) I expected the food to be stunning. Occasionally it was, but mostly it was very good. I like the small plates idea. It was a fun night, but don't expect a fine dining experience. It's casual with very good, interesting food and lots of good-looking young people.

Fantastic new dining experience in Downtown. The menu is extraordinary - you know you are in for a treat just reading through some of the cryptically named dishes. The food was outstanding - one star lost as we had to send the halibut back as it was overcooked, but the re-fired fish was incredible and cooked to perfection.
