Went to Towne on a recommendation from a friend that read about it in a magazine. I have lived in Boston for four years now, and this is my new favorite restaurant. The food was exceptional from the tartar appetizer to the short rib crisp tender and finally ending on the angel food cake with an extreme, yet delicious amount of cotton candy. The drinks were also excellent, and the service was phenomenal. I highly recommend Towne to anyone, looking for great food, drinks, and atmosphere. I cannot wait to go back!

The food was phenomenal! We can't wait to come back. Bar area was very crowded and it was hard to get to the bar to get a drink while we waited for our table. That was the only downside. But we expect that kind of thing in a hot, new restaurant.

The service and food were amazing, but the rooms are very poorly laid out because you can't hear people sitting right next to you with the noise coming from the bar and bouncing off the the tile ceiling...We really enjoyed our meal but will never return becasue of the migrane headache we all had leaving. Even our server could not hear our order (we had to shout it at him)...pity

We sat upstairs in the dining room overlooking Boylston Street, a lovely room with NICE ambience. It gave a feeling of elegance. Our waiter was outstanding as was the food. We will definitely go back. I would again request this same dining room, as it was too nosy for us senior citizens downstairs.

The decor is outstanding, it has a nice modern feel to it. The layout is cool with three different bars on two levels, we were there on a Friday night and thought it was strange they closed the upstairs bar by 11:00PM? The people at the bar were the type to get in a fight in a nice, upscale restaurant bar, which happened. Our server was amazing, she was very attentive and explained any questions we had thoroughly. She even had a little something extra added to dessert when she found out it was one of my friend's birthdays. The menu was not great, seemed lacking. The food was good, but not great, kind of a let down. We decided we would go back for drinks but not to eat.

We had an excellent table upstairs for our 8 PM reservation on Friday. The place was obviously the new place to be in the Back Bay. The downstairs bar at the entrance was an aural assault, and the second bar and main floor dining room were busy as well. The second floor bar and dining room had a lower buzz, but we now wish we could have eaten in the smaller seoond dining room on the second floor, which fronts on Boylston St - full carpeting and drapery kept the noise level in that room to a really nice conversational level. While buzz at the bars is great, the noise level in the main and second floor dining areas detracts from the dining experience. Food - really good apps and mains, but one dessert (Paris Brest) was a big miss.

  • The combination of booths

The combination of booths and some tables gives a lively feel while providing for privacy for each party. The open kitchen, and the flow of the spaces, gives the customer the sense of being part of the operation. We enjoyed the fish- from the tuna, very rare, to the cod, to the swordfish; the beet carpaccio was a bit skimpy while the iceberg with blue cheese was almost too large. The maple sugar cotton candy as part of one of the desserts may not be to everyone's liking, but it added to the sense of fun, with the menu, the food , and the experience. Service was friendly, and efficient without being too rushed or slow.

The food had potential but still needs a little refining. Atmosphere again had potential but design was a little off, as if they couldn't agree on the vision, with more upscale food and wine but plastic coated menus and water served in beakers (everyone at our table felt odd drinking out of a beaker). We had a professional and attentive server.

Upon entering I was somewhat dismayed by the overbearing noise emanating from the ground floor bar. It is not obvious where one goes to check in for dinner. We requested a quiet table and once you have been escorted to the third floor it is very pleasant. The food is good and the service was fine. The only thing that I found strange was the printing on the menu. I'm sure that the designer thought it was a trendy idea, but it was quite confusing. Also I would recommend that they have butter knives. It was not easy to pick up the butter and quite delicious spreads with a pointed dinner knife! I think the place is good for singles. Definitely not for children and if you wanted a romantic dinner Menton would be a better choice.

Basically, the food was bland. The menu sounded as though more spices were involved, but everything was actually kind of bland. The brick chicken was boring and overwhelmed by grease. The duck, which was cooked quite well, was not actually all that interesting or different. The appetizer of bread with curried cauliflower was disappointing -- there were only two tiny pieces of cauliflower and no evidence of any curry. However, the tartare appetizer was excellent! We may go back to try the fish side of the menu, but we probably wouldn't try the poultry/meat side of the menu again. Service, however, was great!!

Although it's not fair to review a restaurant that's less than a month old, when the experience is this great and the food this good, why not? Plus we got personal attention from Lidia Shire AND Jasper White, the two venerable Boston chefs who have collaborated on this gorgeous -- sumptuous, even -- new restaurant. The eclectic, inventive menu is unique and we took advantage of the variety -- Colorado lamb with tandoori spices, lobster and corn pizza with honeyed ricotta (don't turn up that nose: I would eat it every day if I could), perfect swordfish, amazing softshell crab, and on and on, each dish served with so many delicious details. And you will laugh out loud at the brown sugar angel food cake, the wittiest desert ever.

This is the new hot spot for the city. Beautiful restaurant with many different styles of rooms to sit in that would meet most peoples desires. The kitchen has some kinks to work out since it is so new, there are a large number of seats to serve and it is probably busier than they ever expected, but the management is exceptional and wants to make the experience as positive as possible.

  • The food quality was good.

The food quality was good. My only complaint with the food is that we ordered the Tomahawk Steak, which says on the menu that it serves 3-4 people. Three of us decided to share it but when it arrived, there was only enough food for 2 people and the steak cost $95! I've ordered that cut of steak before and that size before for 1 person and had more than enough to eat, but I think it is false advertising to sell it for $95 for 3-4 people when there is not enough meat for three. We went with a group of six, and they seated us upstairs close to the bar area. It was difficult to hear each other without screaming across the table, so we ended up talking mostly in twos. I would have preferred to have sat away from the bar.

The food was wonderful and overall, we enjoyed our meal at Towne. We sat upstairs, which was considerably more quiet than the downstairs dining/bar area. We were immediately baffled by the use of beakers as water glasses, as nothing else in the restaurant was science-themed. We also thought the plastic menu was inappropriate. The service was generally good, but when the cheese plate we had ordered as the final course was accidently given to and devoured by the table next to us, it took more than 20 minutes to figure out why our cheese had not yet arrived and to finally be served. That being said, I understand that the restaurant had only been open for about 2 weeks and some "kinks" will be worked out with time.

Very fun scene, creative menu and delicious food. We had a big service hiccup -- 2 of our three meals as well as all our side dishes arrived 5 minutes before the 3rd. So, two of us ate cold dinners and all 3 of us ate cold side dishes. After we complained, the waiter wasn't helpful, and I didn't want to make a scene. So I imagined how good it would have been at the proper temperature. One of the managers (owners) came by after we'd eaten to offer us dessert or an after-dinner drink, which we declined. Nice gesture, though. And we were forgiving, since the restaurant had only been open 9 days. Will definitely give it another try.

The menu is diverse, decor is fun and fabulous, wood burning fire aroma is heaven, the artwork is funky and fun, we are big Lydia fans and love Locke Ober and Scampo, also have enjoyed many sundays watching the Pats at Summer Shack, great combo!!! One comment: the flatbread was soggy in the middle, too much on it? Teatro's flatbread is my gold standard and this one came up a little short. The food was delic, we sat upstairs near the kitchen and it was fun being near the open kitchen and viewing what was going on. We went a week after the opening and staff was very attentive. Maybe a tad much at times. Our waiter told us the wine list was very reasonable but it wasn't. We also saw another table w/ a 12 course lobster menu that we weren't offered, that I would have loved to have tried b/c you could pick and choice. The restaurant itself is enormous; overall the food was good but a tade pricey. The eclectic decor I was not a fan of but the eclectic menu I was b/c there is something for everyone.
