The food was amazing. JG does it again. But my biggest concern is the location. Entering through an atrium feels a little funny and the space out front I would never want to sit in unless I was there for lunch. The service was very good as well. At times a little too helpful in clearing out our plates. I will definately eat here again but I'm going to want to sit in the booths in the back.

As always, Jose Garces food was incredible. The service was good although the server could have toned it down just a bit - she was slightly pushy - but overall very nice and extremely helpful. A good experience. My only negative about the restaurant were the prices - a little steep given the more casual atmosphere.

Jose Garces has done it again! For those familiar with Garces' other restaurants, JG Domestic may seem a bit like his other places--small plates. However, while Amada, Tinto, and Chifa are focused on a specific type of cuisine, JG Domestic goes in whatever direction seems interesting to the chef, using ingredients sourced from domestic, mainly organic suppliers. Meats include such unique offerings as elk and boar. Fish are from special fisheries are locales. The wine list is filled with lots of organic wines. I want to go back because I left feeling that this might be his best restaurant yet. I want to try it again to make sure.

All the vegetable dishes we ordered (brussel sprouts, potatoes, squash with kale) were delicious, though very rich and buttery. The lamb ribs were fall off the bone tender. We thought the high chairs at the long tables would be uncomfortable, but they were fine. Friendly service. We ate an early, pre-theater dinner, so the restaurant was quiet and not very full, but I suspect we were just ahead of the crowds. Discounted parking takes the sting out, if you're driving in from the burbs. We met friends who were arriving via Amtrak -- perfect!

The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, without being pretentious. The staff was friendly, polite, helpful, and most importantly genuine making for an overall great environment for older families, friends, business partners, or dates. I wouldn't suggest bringing the kids, but young adults will enjoy the food experience. Lots of dinner choices meant for sharing, but trust me you'll take one look at the menu and went to try everything. The food and wine lists were top picks, and I would suggest doing the chef's sampling because you'll end up spending that much per person regardless. It's a little pricey, but well worth the money for an enjoyable evening.

  • Does Philly need another Garces
    HappyDiner
    Dined on 11/4/2010
Does Philly need another Garces restaurant? It does in the form of JG Domestic. This time around Garces is focusing on American cuisine, served semi-tapas style with small plates that still somehow seem substantial. The menu emphasizes quality, both in the local ingredients and those Garces has chosen from further afield. Whether elk from Montana or salmon from Washington State, you can be sure the food will be superb. We had wonderful service and the location itself, though quite near 30th St. Station, is elegant without being at all fussy. It's a great place.

JG knows how to prepare and serve food and he does it flawlessly every time at every restaurant of his I've enjoyed - and I've enjoyed them all several times. The food is beautifully presented, tastes terrific and is served by conscientious and knowledgeable servers. Having been a disciple of the Garces Empire since he burst on the Philly scene, I was hoping that JG Domestic would be a change of pace from his other restaurants, but it seems to be more of the (excellent) same. I'm ready to see a new concept JG restaurant - one where you would not be able to tell, just from reading the menu, that it was owned and operated by Jose Garces. Strange to be whining about too much of a good thing... As I said, the food is fab.

Wow! It looks like bar food from the website but is serious foodie food. Too bad the wine list is all American. If you don't like overripe Parkerized new-world jampots, bring something from PLCB. Corkage is $20 but worth it for this food. My only complaint, the apparently current menu on the website promised roast suckling lamb and didn't warn that it changes from night to night. The suckling pig in its place was not roasted whole but cut up and the pieces cooked separately. It would have been better roasted whole.

Obviously we dined early in the life of the restaurant. Our experience was fine, but not stellar. There were execution issues that I assume will be fixed as the restaurant goes on. Any dishes featuring cheese were disappointing, broken and salty (the fondue and the turnip manicotti). The salad was overdressed and super skimpy for the $15 price tag. A couple dishes also seemed to be missing components (meyer lemon on the prawns, quince paste on the manicotti). A couple of the dishes, however, were very good. The potted duck was stellar, though the addition of the onion jam seemed superfluous. The Jidori chicken with corn flakes was very good as well. Our server was pleasant, though she seemed to be trying too hard to be jokey.

Also the lobster cappucino was very salty, so stay away! The kale as a side was my favorite, Also the chicken with cornflake crust was also my favorite

Had a later reservation on a Sat night - place was half empty and yet they were still going to seat us on the perimiter of the restaurant by the lobby. We requested a different area which they accomodated. The food was terrific but ambiance was lacking - too open to the lobby area - maybe if they were crowded it would not have been as noticible. Would not mind dropping by after work for dinner before going home..but would not come into town to hit it on a Sat night again.

The newest restaurant from Jose Garces and it did not disappoint. Had a little issue with a couple of the entrees not coming out till MUCH LATER than the rest of the meal...could have attributed it to being newly opened but the waiter didn't really do anything to make it right! Don't think J.G. would have been happy....we were only in PA for the weekend and went to Amada (Jose's first) and JG (his newest) so we were disappointed it wasn't handled more professionally. There was plenty of staff- the long wait for the last two items was a let down and put us out of the mood to try dessert.

Good appetizers. Duck is delicious. Crab appetizer also, though it was in the oven too long. Flatbread is flatbread, but chanterelles were tasty. Once you get past the appetizers, get out the microscopes. Beet dish is for the dainty. Have a scavenger hunt to find the beets. Small-plate main courses at $20 plus each result in a check of about $80 per person (tip included) and the question "where's the beef?". Something called a "rack of boar" is what everyone else would call a "chop"- small, tasteless. Chocolate tart was dry, although butterscotch beignets are a great idea. Excellent servers but food comes out willy-nilly, a JG specialty. More like eating than fine dining. Laban will love it.

JG Domestic d did not live up to high expectations. I have enjoyed many meals from other JG establishments, but this was not satisfactory by any means. Everything was just "OK." The food was not creative or tasty for that matter. The space is very cold and uninviting. I ordered a drink from the list “Zephyr," and I needed to send it back because it was more like a shot of wheatgrass that a well-balanced cocktail. The suckling lamb was overly salty, and they were out of two dishes that I originally ordered. Overall, it was not a good dining experience. I was really disappointed.

JG Domestic was great! The food was excellent and the portions were huge. Garces does it again! Someone asked me what my favorite dish was and I couldn't answer. I know to get the duck at Tinto or the sirloin at Amada but there were so many great plates at JG. Garces was able to take candied pecans and carry them to the extreme or a great pumpkin spread to go with the cheese plate or cheesy warm crab served with toast and on and on. The surprise of the night were the beets something I remember from my childhood without found memories. Garces somehow made them into tender flavorful treats! JG Domestic is a must!

If you enjoy eating in the lobby of the Amtrak offices, under an escalator, this might be the place for you. I think Jose Garces misses the mark. This will only be a destination spot for those who work in the building. There is no ambiance at all. As for the food and drink: Our drinks were very watery and barely resembled the way a Palmetto and an Appletini should taste, maybe more like a sports drink than an adult beverage. Also no Absolute in the house. We started out with the Miles River blue claw crab gratin and that was very good, a nice mix of creamy crab chunks. We then moved to the Columbia River Salmon and that was very un-inspired. The poached egg and trout roe did nothing to enhance the small piece of salmon served ski
