The fish (morel/halibut) was overly-salted. The busboy was especially helpful and attentive. Server never bothered to explain the tasting menu, so it was lucky we already knew about that option.

Vermilion was good, although erratic. My friend's pork loin was dry and not very flavorful. Dessert was kind of bland. Scallops, fish and lamb loin on the chef's tasting menu were absolutely outstanding. Service was very good.

Chef's tasting menu is a bargain compared to most other similar restaurants and it is a terrific pairing of dishes and wines! The 1dt table on 2nd floor is a 4 top by itself and amidst the wine collection. You get the kitchen traffic but don't have to listen to other tables' dinner conversation.

I love this restaurant. My fiance and I have been here more times that we can count - the first time was our first date - and we keep coming back, bringing our friends and family. This is the perfect restaurant for a relaxed dinner with friends, or for a special occasion like an engagement. We will keep coming back over and over again! The menu is always creative and fresh, with old favorites and new treats! My fiance is particular about what she will eat - no fish, nothing exotic, etc. - while I will go for adventure and unusual. There is always something for both of us to enjoy.

Everything was fantastic. But for the amount of money spent, it was a minor drag to have to see the tv in the bar playing America's Funniest Home Videos all through dinner. I expect that at Appleby's but not Vermillion. Just a quibble. Eveything else was great, especially the scallops!

Pleasant, Old Town atmosphere -- quiet for lunch but the brick walls could lend a noisier touch on a busy night. Food was very good -- had the shrimp po' boy sandwiches, Jerusalem artichoke soup and the winter greens salad, and a cheese plate for dessert. A fabulous wine list of by-the-glass or bottle choices at extremely reasonable prices especially for this area. Most bottle choices in this area were in the $24-30 range. I'll definitely try Vermillion again, perhaps for dinner to see if the food rises to the "memorable" level but it was solidly very good.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2006VIP

The food was fantastic - but our group of three was told, after we ordered a bottle of champagne, three "starters" (all the price of a meal), AND three desserts, that the main dining room was reserved for people actually ordering "meals". We had made reservations about a week in advance, and honestly planned on eating a meal - and actually ended up stuffed with our "starters"! - but just were more intrigued by the "starters" than the main dishes. We apologized for not knowing, and our waitress said she would let us stay, but based on the service we saw provided at other nearby tables, we could tell we were definitely the black sheep of the "full meal" dining room. Food was great - would return for that - but customer service needs WORK!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2003

The location, ambiance, service and presentation were all excellent. It is small (20-30 tables split upstairs and downstairs), quiet, in a small renovated building in a gentrified retail district. The food varied. The scallops on a bed of pineapple chutney were extraordinary but the salad was drowned in balsamic vinegar. If everything had been as good as the scallops, Vermillion would be a jewel.

Service was wonderful...friendly without being pushy. We lingered well after our meal without being rushed out of there. Brunch was absolutely delish and there were several other dishes I'm going to have to go back to try. I chose this restaurant for my birthay a few weeks back and while we were waiting for friends to arrive we waited in the bar. Another patron spilled their beer all over, including on me. The bar staff were immediately there cleaning up and they kindly made a concession on our tab for the mishap. I feel well treated when going to Vermilion.

The hostesses service was not that great. We ran into a friend at the bar while she was bringing us to our table and she interrupted my conversation twice to tell me it was time to go and was not friendly about it. Would have been nicer to go back to the hostess stand and we find her when we were ready. Also, the upstairs seating wasn't as fun for two women. Maybe better for couples. Would have preferred to sit downstairs where it was more lively.

Vermillion had been recommended to us by friends and we went w/an out of town guest. In our party of 3 two decided to order the tasting menu. When the odd person out wanted to have a tasting menu too, with wine pairings, but with different dishes so we could try more of the food offerings we were most graciously accommodated and the selections were WONDERFUL. The service was also wonderful. We will definitely be back soon and will recommend Vermillion to other friends, family and business contacts.

Food was excellent. I attended on a Sunday, however, and I wonder if the Sunday night service/food was better than typical. I think more care goes into food when dining during an off-night (smaller crowds, less rush), so I'm not sure what the restaurant would be like on e.g. a Friday. But it's the perfect place to go onto on a Sunday night, unless you are going out to be seen.

Food and ambience were both excellent. It took at least 45 minutes between finishing our appetizers and the arrival of our entrees. When we finally asked our waitress, she said they were just plating it up, but then it took another 10-15 minutes. During that time no one brought us more bread, and we had to get our waitress' attention to order more wine. She never acknowledged our long wait, but did give us a free dessert so she obviously knew. If friends asked we would still definitely recommend the restaurant, but would also warn them about the service.
