A word from Vermilion - Alexandria
Vermilion features Chef William Morris' menu of Contemporary American cuisine. Complimenting Chef Morris' menu is Vermilion's wine list, named one of the top wine lists in the country by Restaurant Hospitality Magazine. Combining a charming location in Old town Alexandria with stylized design and atmosphere, Vermilion represents a bit of downtown sophistication: from the exposed brick in the upstairs dining room to the overstuffed pillows in the lounge downstairs, Vermilion holds something for all tastes.

I sent my parents to Vermilion for their 42nd anniversary, and they absolutely loved it. They had the tasting menu and wine pairings (first time they've ever done something like that!) and loved every offering. And the service was also outstanding, so thank you for a terrific experience!

Excellent restaurant that feels hip and "city like" so it's a nice surprise addition to Old Town. Great date restaurant or place to go with some friends. Lively bar scene downstairs but the noise does not disrupt the more formal dining upstairs. Great decor. Excellent service and food. Nice view of Old Town from the upstairs windows...

Service was wonderful...friendly without being pushy. We lingered well after our meal without being rushed out of there. Brunch was absolutely delish and there were several other dishes I'm going to have to go back to try. I chose this restaurant for my birthay a few weeks back and while we were waiting for friends to arrive we waited in the bar. Another patron spilled their beer all over, including on me. The bar staff were immediately there cleaning up and they kindly made a concession on our tab for the mishap. I feel well treated when going to Vermilion.

The hostesses service was not that great. We ran into a friend at the bar while she was bringing us to our table and she interrupted my conversation twice to tell me it was time to go and was not friendly about it. Would have been nicer to go back to the hostess stand and we find her when we were ready. Also, the upstairs seating wasn't as fun for two women. Maybe better for couples. Would have preferred to sit downstairs where it was more lively.

Vermillion had been recommended to us by friends and we went w/an out of town guest. In our party of 3 two decided to order the tasting menu. When the odd person out wanted to have a tasting menu too, with wine pairings, but with different dishes so we could try more of the food offerings we were most graciously accommodated and the selections were WONDERFUL. The service was also wonderful. We will definitely be back soon and will recommend Vermillion to other friends, family and business contacts.

Food was excellent. I attended on a Sunday, however, and I wonder if the Sunday night service/food was better than typical. I think more care goes into food when dining during an off-night (smaller crowds, less rush), so I'm not sure what the restaurant would be like on e.g. a Friday. But it's the perfect place to go onto on a Sunday night, unless you are going out to be seen.

We've been to Vermilion for drinks/happy hour before (and really enjoy the bar ambiance) but had never eaten there before brunch on Sunday. The menu offers both "tried and true" favorites and some very innovative and tasty choices, as well. And the prices are very reasonable. We'll definitely stop back for dinner in the near future.

Food and ambience were both excellent. It took at least 45 minutes between finishing our appetizers and the arrival of our entrees. When we finally asked our waitress, she said they were just plating it up, but then it took another 10-15 minutes. During that time no one brought us more bread, and we had to get our waitress' attention to order more wine. She never acknowledged our long wait, but did give us a free dessert so she obviously knew. If friends asked we would still definitely recommend the restaurant, but would also warn them about the service.

I've raved about the chef's preparations on my last 2 visits, but this one failed. My guest's lamb was extremely undercooked and fatty. My lasagna was tasty but dry -- perhaps it was the "foam" on top but not nearly as delicious as the version in February. This inconsistency in cooking and preparation reminds me of the sister restaurant "Rustico". Suggest perfecting simple versions of these dishes. Service is always nice; bar experience is probably worth repeating but dining keeps dropping the ball.

This was our first dining experience at Vermilion and it was an excellent evening from beginning to end. The ambiance was warm and inviting and conducive to quiet personal conversation without worrying about other parties sitting close enough to listen in, or having to compete with nearby conversations. The presentation of selected items from the menu was delivered professionally and personally by our waiter (JB), without the stacato of a memorized speech. His indepth knowledge of the menu items, as well as his spot-on wine recommendation only served to enhance the experience. Not only will we return, we'll return soon! THANK YOU!!!! Jim & Marta

I have been to Vermillion twice in the last two months and both times it has been excellent. The menu seems to change with the seasons so even though it had been rather recent since I ahad last eaten there, I had totally different choices. The Char of this week was ecellent as was a very unusual salad that reminded me of a updated waldorf salad. The service was also a great blend of informative, flexible and unpretentious yet formal. Finally, what I really love is thet they will sell you a half glass of wine. For someone who loves wine but has to drive home, it is perfect! All around a great place.

We loved the decor of the restaurant, the staff was friendly, and the food was good, but took a very long time to arrive. They did comp an appetizer without us asking because of the long delay, which helped. It was frustrating that our waitress seemed to purposefully avoid looking at us twice when walking by the table once our food was around 30 minutes delayed when she was quite attentive the rest of the time. We might return for a drink in the bar because of the ambiance, but probably would not return for brunch.

This was not our first visit to Vermillion, but it continues to impress. Seasonal changes to the menu had added some excellent brunch options, and we've decided we simply have to return to sample the burger. The specialty drink list is short but solid, and the tables overlooking King Street made for a nice experience. Service is prompt but not pressured, and the food is quite good. Just save room for dessert...

This place is over-rated, over-priced and pretentious. The menu and the food are very good, but not much better than more reasonably priced restaurants in the area. The atmosphere is not welcoming. We felt like they thought that we were doing them a favor by dining there. Service was mechanical and not friendly (I don't mean UNfriendly; I mean there was no warmth) from the greeter to the wait staff. The whole atmosphere was cold and sterile. This has the potential to be a great place, but it did no do it for us...at least that evening.

Vermillion is a gem that shines in a neighborhood that it's easy to get distracted in. While I love Old Towne, and all it has to offer, Vermillion is truly worth seeking-out. This is THE place for brunch. The eggs benedict are fantastic. For evening dining, the wine list is fantastic. The service is always polite and the plates are beautifully served.

We have brunch here often- the food is delicious. We especially like the potato latkes (although they seem more like hash browns than latkes per se) and appreciate that they allow substitutions for the vegetarians in our group who don't want sausage or bacon. It seems the menu is a little unclear regarding what sides come with your meal, or our servers have been unsure of what to bring. The brunch is a good value but we came back for dinner and the service was slow and the meals not as reasonably priced as brunch. Occasionally, the service at brunch can be really slow too. The bar seems nice but we usually just come for weekend brunch.
