A word from Carmine's - Washington DC
Carmine’s is a family style, value-driven restaurant concept with locations in NYC, NJ, Nassau Bahamas, and Washington DC. Restaurateur Artie Cutler created Carmine’s with one goal in mind: to open a restaurant that would serve every meal in the style of an Italian American wedding feast, featuring extra large portions of home-style antipasto, pastas, seafood and meat entrees served on extra large platters designed for sharing. Carmine’s is the perfect place to casually enjoy friends and family over great food and wine, with excellent service, the way it used to be at grandma’s house.

This was our first visit and we were happy with the entire situation. It is a beautiful restaurant, the food (we just had sandwiches) was excellent. It's the first time we each took half of each sandwich home. The sandwiches were accompanied by excellent salads. We had I had the Caesar salad and my husband had the house salad. Both salads were great. The only possible downside was that my husband mentioned that he wished his salad would have been served on a separate plate. This was a Saturday visit, so the restaurant was not as busy as we understand it is on weekdays. The service was excellent. The wait staff seemed to help each other out. We will definitely go back.

I went to Carmine's because I used to go to the one in NYC when I lived there. It did not live up to the NYC experience. The food was not as good. I think the restaurant is relying too much on its name and not putting enough effort into surpassing the success of the NYC location. DC can be alot more critical and unforgiving when it comes to its notable spots.

We visited during summer restaurant week 2010. The food was excellent but the service was terrible. The poor service may be attributed to the fact that the restaurant has only been open two weeks so they are still working out some of the kinks. I would recommend for large groups. Reasonably priced!

The food and the service were very good. Portions are enormous but are meant to be shared. We were a party of 4 and ordered a pasta dish, two main courses and a vegetable. One main course or two main courses and no pasta with the vegetable would have been more than enough food. All the food was cooked very nicely and to our liking. The escarole we ordered was still a bit crunchy which for us was a good thing as people tend to cook this to mush. The fish of the day, salmon, was also cooked perfectly to our specified temperature. Definitely would go back...it's really noisy and a bit hard to carry on a decent conversation.

Needs a lot of work--should serve water in regular glasses (esp. when that's all someone is drinking) or at least stop by to refill the tiny ones. We had to catch our 2 waiters and ask for anything we needed. I ordered my pasta with chicken that didn't come. There's no real white sauce--just garlic & oil. Overall, not a very good experience.

Calamari was outstanding. We also ordered the veal parmesana and it was great. The rigatoni with sausage and broccoli was terrific, but not worth the price. I would advise people to go in a group of 6 to get the most out of Carmine's. You will end up with doggy bags if you don't! All in all, we thought Carmine's was super and we plan to go back again.

I joined a friend who wanted to try Carmine's which serves family size portions. The portions are sized for four or more so two people have to share if they don't want to waste food or money. We shared a salad and pasta and had a huge portion to take away. The bill was $40 + tax for the two items and one ice tea. Of course, by the time I got home, the salad was no longer good. I didn't take the pasta. I might go back again but only if I was with a group of at least six people. Personally, I'm offended by the waste of food and the high prices. A half or quarter portion would be great and I'd definitely go back again.

The restaurant was very impressive... big, beatiful, and conveniently located in Penn Quarter near the Archives Memorial Metro. The southern-style rigatoni and penne vodka were delcious, as were the stuffed mushrooms, but I think the best part of the meal was the bread. Huge portions. Delicious. The only issue was the service was very slow. We sat down before the lunch rush. It took forever just to get drink refills and the check. Our server was MIA most of the time, and that was before the lunch crowd came in.

Food was fabulous and plentiful and the atmosphere is really nice (high ceilings and the tables aren't crowded together). I think the food was even better than the Carmine's in New York. The most amazing thing is that the price is so reasonable for such great food. Bravo to Carmines DC!

To start, the restaurant is beautifully decorated. The bar scene is lively and the hostess staff is friendly and inviting. We were taken in earlier than our reservation and had a fantastic waiter who was engaging and knowledgable about the menu. The food was also wonderful. We had the stuffed mushrooms with the penne alla vodka and a side of meatballs. The stuffed mushrooms were the highlight of the meal. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for some wholesome family style Italian cooking in DC.

Three of us went for restaurant week. The restaurant is laid out well with a lot of space between tables, though we had a reservation for 3 they put us at a table made for 6. The portions are huge. Everyone took home part of their food. The caesar salad was very good. The bread was hot and delicious. The pasta perfectly al dente. The only disappointment was the canolli. The waitress strongly recommended the white sangia and it was on of the best I've had. In terms of value for restaurant week. We could have done just as well ordering off the regular menu and sharing. We all would have had plenty and spent the same, or less.

I thought the food was pretty good. They give you plenty of food which is good for large groups of people. Some of the dishes are kind of spicy. It would have been nice if they had a brief description of each pasta dish and the sauces so you can know what dish to order. When I came I did not know what to order because it does not describe any of the pasta at all. For example, tomato sauce with Parmesan cheese. Some people are not going to know what in the world to order without a description. Somebody could be disappointed if they order a dish that is spicy and they don't like spicy food. However, I did enjoy the food, and the staff treated me great. Great service.

This place is only good for groups of four or more. Went with a colleague for lunch and the portions are so big that you can order one entree and it will feed at least two or more. I was disappointed that you can't get a single slice of the desserts like tiramisu; you have to order an entire pie for $16 that can feed 8 or more. Overall I was disappointed with my sandwich which was entirely too large for one person; however the service is good and the waiters explain the restaurant policies politely regardless of how impractical.

My girlfriend and I attended Carmines for a "date night". I was very unhappy with the service mainly because she failed to warn us of the sizes of the appetizers. We ordered the Calamari and it was enough to feed a small village. I appreciate honesty from the servers and I felt that our server was just selling the most expensive items. The restaurant is clearly awesome for families, but not for a couple. We also did not enjoy the food as much as we would have liked.

I was extremely dissapointed with the Chicken Marsala entree we ordered. It was bland, and not appetizing what so ever. I wasn't able to eat much of it at all. This is an extremely different experience from the one we had at the Carmine's in NYC. Everything we ordered from the NY location was superb! This is one of the reasons I wanted to try the DC one. The food was pretty good, definitely WAY better than what I expected from a chain restaurant doing family-style (read: mass produced) pastas. But what really pushed the experience over the top was the service. The host staff and waitstaff were FANTASTIC - super friendly and went above and beyond to accommodate our special requests. We were there to break our fast for the first day of Ramadan, and at my request they made sure to seat us near one of the empty private rooms so we had a place to pray. Also, the waiter didn't bat an eye when we said we wouldn't be drinking any alcohol (most servers are not quite so kind), helped us avoid pork on the menu, and was all around VERY helpful and friendly. I will definitely return with many friends!
