  • Great place; a little lapse

This is a favorite place for my wife and me, with an interesting quasi-European menu that usually includes a complimentary amuse bouche and a prix fixe option, both missing this particular evening, presumably judged to be unnecessary to capitalize on the crowd the Friday after Valentine's Day. Sorry they did this because it undermines the classy reputation the place has worked hard to develop. Service was also a bit substandard this particular evening. Our waitress balked at the request to substitute steamed vegetables for potato on one diner's plate, saying the cook staff would "yell at her." Bizarre. Anyway, I would recommend this restaurant and plan to return, frequently.

Glad I checked it out but would I go back? At this point i'm really not sure. The food was really good and I did like the selections that were available. The price for me was a little on the higher end for the portion size that was received. I really thought the appetizers in particular were overpriced. especially when you see a price for an item at 8.00 then in pencil it has been lined out and replaced with 15.00. I was like, "they must be really great tonight". Ambiance I believe, is the key selling point at A La Provence along with some pleasant food and wine as a secondary compliment. It is definitely a "special occasion" place so in my opinion "Teds" will be frequented more often that here.

  • Considering that it was Valentine's

Considering that it was Valentine's Day dinner A La Provence offered a very nice non-prix fixe menu, seated us on time and the service did not suffer a bit due to the crowd size. The drinks are well made and the wine list is very extensive. We ordered the escargot, beef carpaccio, roasted beet salad and the pork chop. All of which was very good except that the beef carpaccio was extremely salty. Although we turned down ordering of dessert the waiter brought us a small strawberry shortcake cookie with fresh strawberries, creme and chocolate drizzle to share. Overall it was a really nice dining experience on an evening that can be very frustrating due to overcrowding.

I had never been to A la Provence before but decided to bring my girlfriend here for Valentine's Day. After we were seated, we were given the special Valentine's Day menu prepared by the chef and was told that the price fixe menu was not available that evening. Additionally, almost everything on the special menu was accompanied by asparagus, which is something I cannot eat due to dietary problems. When I asked about a substitution, I was told that for tonight, there could be no substitutions because of the special menu. The food itself was good but not noteworthy and the desserts were very disappointing. I didn't find it to be worth the price we paid. I'm not sure I'd go again.

  • Don't go on Valentine's Day
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 2/14/2013
We have gone to this place several times and loved it, but on valentine's day (and it was also our 10 yr wedding anniversary)it was awful, they didn't serve the food that they usual do (which was the reason we booked it in the first place). The menu consisted of "how fast can we cook it" items, we drove an hr to get there and was EXTREMELY upset with the menu, we tried to make do, but after getting our food we were even more upset, the food was under seasoned and plated in a big hurry, we tried to say something to our waiter but the only time we saw him was taking our order and giving us our food and then our check. We will not be doing this again.

The onion soup was among the best I have had but the "ceasar salad" left much to be desired. On a small plate there were two leaves of Romaine lettuce, uncut, and a very small twist of pastry on which had been put some anchovie paste. Not what I call a salad of any kind.

It was so nice to go out for lunch that was not just soup salad sandwich fare. I also enjoyed being able to converse with my guest and not have to fight to hear what was being said. My selection was good, but not quite what I expected. I felt there was way too much sauce and it was a bit salty for my taste. My guest was very pleased with her selection. Overall, it still made me want to return and try other dishes both at lunch and dinner.

I like the design aesthetic but a trip to the bar made me feel like the place was a bit grimy. In fact, had I only experienced this place at the bar area, I would have given it a bad rating and never returned. The staff there was busy, but not even acknowledging our existence after we'd been there for 15 minutes sitting right at the small bar, showed a lack of training and lack of character on the staff's part. Even a nod or a smile would have sufficed. The bar area is very small, the staff busy, but having worked in the business as a server, I have to say, this is not acceptable. Our server in the dining room was a superstar, and his ability to accommodate our every need without acting like a cloying sycophant, was impressive!

We loved the 4-course prix fixe dinner with so many wonderful choices. The salmon over mixed vegetables was delicious,as was the lamb shank. The aged goat cheese (one of many cheese choices) was sensational. The friendly service was very helpful in steering us through the wine list.

Our evening with a party of four was wonderful -- it was a great experience of quiet warm ambience with Exceptionally delicious French food. Our waiter was professional, knowledgeable, pleasant and also efficient. We've been at La Provence on the weekend when it's much busier and thoroughly enjoyed our experience -- this was a Tuesday night and reminds you to think of going out during the week because often you can be indulged and even spoiled a little as we were! For special occasions, for a Christmas "celebration visit" as we had with friends this evening, it's a very lovely upscale place that meets your expectations.

This was my second visit to A La Provence. I went back for the almond crusted rainbow trout in bur blanc sauce. Although it was good, it wasn't excellent like it had been the first time. What was consistent, unfortunately, was slow service and limited wine list. Service picked up once I asked for a waiter and they were nice, just used to more polished service. Although its a French restaurant they offer only one type if champagne and one French wine on the entire menu. My first glass had smudge Mark's omit and the Red wine tasted "old" like it had sat in the bottle. They graciously replaced it with a white from New Zealand which was good. So I would say go for the food but be prepared for the service and slightly outdated ambiance.

Our neighborhood group reserved the private dining room nearly a month in advance of our 12/6 holiday lunch. The reservation was confirmed twice more before we arrived. Another group was in the private room when we arrived and our group was placed in the main dining room, not an appropriate place for a program. We were not notified of the change, so my advice is to get a written contract if you are celebrating something special and expect to occupy the private room. This is the second time our group experienced this at this restaurant.

My wife and I returned after about six months and enjoyed it as usual. We both started with the tomato caprese, a mixture of diced tomato and herbs that is delicious. We followed that with the trout which was excellent, a cheese plate, and finally a soufflé which was a very tasty but light finish to a great meal. The wine list is reasonably extensive and fairly priced. One of the nicest aspects of this elegant place is the art work gracing the walls. The only thing I think they could improve is the finer aspects of service. For example, our server did not crumb the table before dessert, removed the dishes of one of us before the other was finished, and was inconsistent with the placement of flatware. RGinTally.

Food was very good, although the chopped salad varied from person to person---some had bacon, rest did not. The filet was excellent. Potatoes lacked much flavor and would not have been missed. We were there very early having made a last minute change to our reservation time which they graciously accomodated. There were only a few tables occupied so I am unsure of how the service would be if it was crowded. Our waiter was excellent and very knowledgeable about both the wines and the food. He was friendly and attentive. There were 3 of us and we each had the Priz Fixe menu which is a great deal. The BBQ shrimp appetizer was excellent as was the duck for entrees. Our favorite dessert was the meringue cake.Overall it was a pleasant experience. I would say the drawback is that there are many tables just "in a room" and therefore it was lacking in ambiance.

This was my first time there. The restaurant was hard to find. It's in a small shopping center and the signs were not easy to read. The service was good, the food was good but not spectacular for the price. The menu was not easy to understand but our waiter explained it. I would recommend it for special occasions, but it is not the equal to the best restaurants I've been to.

The others got seafood (salmon and grouper) and were also happy with the size of the meals. The vegetables portions were a bit smaller than all would have liked. The desserts and coffee were outstanding. We tried them all! Our only complaint is that we had a soiled tablecloth.
