A word from L'Olivier
The main dining room, decorated with French antiques, exudes quiet, inviting grace and opens onto a large greenhouse filled with plants and fresh flowers. This airy room's elegantly casual ambience is the perfect complement to the more formal dining room.

The private dining rooms offer banquet facilities for business groups with free wi-fi, as well as social events such as weddings, birthdays, and rehersal dinners. The kitchen offers a menu borrowed from French country style recipes that are classical yet light in calories. Suberbly rich desserts include a delectable soufflé and signature crème brulée.

The ambience and especially the food at French restaurant L'Olivier couldn't have been better, nor the staff more gracious, attentive and friendly. I was there on a Saturday night following a theatre event just around the corner at The Eureka Theatre (another Bay Area gem, but that's another review!), and it happened they had a party booked in so the noise level was higher than it normally would be, I think, but they kindly sat us in a back room away from it so we had no problem holding conversation. Everything was expertly and tastefully prepared, the menu is extensive enough that, no matter what you're in the mood for, there's an assortment of dishes to accommodate you, including vegetarian. Couldn't have enjoyed myself more!

  • I can not say enough about
    OpenTable Diner Since 2010
    Dined on 11/22/2012
I can not say enough about the wonderful food, and ambiance. I can not say the same for the service, however. Our waitress was very pleasent, but inexperienced, to say the least. The same goes for the rest of the staff. They would come to our table, but not clear the dishes (not taking advantage of the fact that they were already at the table...they could clear some dishes at that point). We did not see a manager nor anyone to check on the guests experience, nor the staff. I feel that there is a lack of structure and authority in this restaurant. The food is excellent, and based on that we would go back again....probably would ask for a more experienced server. Our hostess was very professional.

  • Thanksgiving?
    Pegstercoug
    Dined on 11/22/2012
Maybe because it was a thanksgiving meal, but it was Terrible. Turkey was dry, potatoes were similar to boxed. The worst was the dressing; at least we think that's what it was. It was a brownish, gluey glop that defies the concept of food. We usually give places that are so so a second chance. Not this time.

It was quiet....all guests were very respectful of the space of the other diners. The quality of the food was good, but it is hard to judge from a traditional Thanksgiving dinner how good the chef and kitchen staff really are. The waiting staff were very professional and pleasant. We look forward to dining there again and trying dishes on their regular menu. It was my wife's first taste of a traditional Thankgiving dinner, and L'Olivier made it a wonderful experience for both of us.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2000VIP

Management had a hard time selecting what music to play and how loud to play it. I have been here many times through the years but at one time it seemed there were two sound systems going with different music. We were seated in the back room often reserved for parties. It is not as pleasant an experience as the main dining room. I thought there may have been entertainment in the main room because of the music confusion. When another guest asked to be reseated he was told no one was allowed special seating as it was Thanksgiving special dinner. When we finished our meal 70% of the restaurant was still empty. If they had been more accommodating our experience would have been on par with past years.

L'Olivier is an odd mix of fine dining on one side and smaller and larger group parties on the other side. Ambiance on the dining side is a bit drab but the food is surprisingly good and the service is excellent. If you like good food and don't worry much about the atmosphere, this is a good, reasonably priced choice.

A hidden gem in my opinion. The lunch we ordered was delicious, and well made. The decor, the setting is dated and low key. Nonetheless, the place was well lit and well kept up. The service staff was friendly and attentive. There weren't many people during lunch service; therefore was rather quiet. The price is rather reasonable, so I say give it a shot. It won't set you back much if you decide that this place is not for you. I dare say that you'd be pleasantly surprised though.

Four of us took advantage of the Lunch Special offered by L'Olivier recently. We were very pleased with the food, service and ambience. The restaurant was very quiet, too quiet actually. The lunch crowd was pretty sparse. L'Olivier is a bit hidden away, has been around for a long time and may not be on the latest hip list. We left satisfied that we had received excellent value.

This restaurant is a real find- good food, reasonable prices and close to the 42 St. Moon Theater. The wait staff was attentive without being intrusive and the 3 course prix fixe dinner is a bargain. The portions were substantial and well-prepared. I particularly enjoyed the green salad with apples and cheese. It is probably worth the trip even without the added incentive of theater tickets.

Even after all these years, L'Olivier remains a neighborhood gem, and a go-to place for a special occasion lunch. It starts at the door with a friendly greeting as though one is a treasured friend even if one hasn't been there in a while. It continues with the attentive, expert service at the table. The food is good, not great. Both our trout and the orange chicken were absolutely fine, but neither had that special something that used to lift L'Olivier up in years gone by. Sadly, even on a Friday the place was not very crowded, although that certainly gave us the privacy for conversation without being overheard. Of course we'll be back, but we're pining for the days when the place was truly something special.
