A word from L'Olivier
The main dining room, decorated with French antiques, exudes quiet, inviting grace and opens onto a large greenhouse filled with plants and fresh flowers. This airy room's elegantly casual ambience is the perfect complement to the more formal dining room.

The private dining rooms offer banquet facilities for business groups with free wi-fi, as well as social events such as weddings, birthdays, and rehersal dinners. The kitchen offers a menu borrowed from French country style recipes that are classical yet light in calories. Suberbly rich desserts include a delectable soufflé and signature crème brulée.

The food was good and although we allowed enough time for a longer lunch, we didn't expect to spend so much time waiting to order, waiting for the food, waving down the waiter, etc. when the restaurant was not very crowded. Might be a better choice for dinner when there are no time constraints, but when on a limited time frame, this would not be an optimal choice when there are so many other options.

Fresh and well prepared and well served. Three different generations at the table enjoyed the food. All dishes were enjoyed from the piquant roasted red bell pepper soup to a wonderful entrée of seafood risotto to desserts that were not only beautiful but, delicious. From a crème brulee to a Valhona chocolate mousse cake with white chocolate and dots of raspberry sauce. One of the most delicious and simple apple tarts. The service was outstanding. Even if you haven't been in awhile - go back! They also have a full bar and I didn't partake but, noted all the drinks as they passed by to other tables.

Had dinner with my wife and a friend on a Monday night. The restaurant was not crowded and quiet which permitted for some great conversartion without having to talk over the noise of a crowd. The service was attentive and prompt and the food was excellent. In particular, their Casesar Salad and their Filet Mignon were well prepared and very tasty. My wife and our friend had the l'escargo (sp?) and said it was delicious. My wife has the Sole and said it was also quite good. It's on the expensive side but I found it well worth it and a good place to occasionally go to for special occasions or to meet a friend for good food and conversation

While being open since 1978, my wife & I last year found this great neighborhood gem just a few blocks from the financial district. We make it a point to visit for both lunch & dinner during our trips to San Francisco. The food is delicately prepared with attentive personal service.

  • The beef cheeks were wonderful
    OpenTable Diner Since 2005VIP

The beef cheeks were wonderful though my husband found the cassoulet good but not remarkable. Service was professional and attentive. When we arrived at 7:30 p.m. there were only two tables with diners, and no one arrived after we did, surprising to us since it is in an area with many restaurants that were very busy. However, one of the tables had 7 diners and of those, a young man in his 20's clearly knew nothing about using a 'restaurant voice' and we could hear every word he said. When he excused himself for a few minutes the other diners conversed at a typical level for a restaurant and it was a welcome relief from his 'holding forth'! Clearly that unfortunate experience put a damper on our enjoyment.

Tuesday night, using a neighborhood coupon. Unfortunately chosen for an anniversary. Onion soup good, except small - served in a container usually reserved for gratinee's. Beef cheeks good. Grand Marnier souffle is the best dish there. Disappointed the food was not at a higher level than before, especially since there was a new chef hired. Two large parties in attendance with screaming children. We heard music would be provided. Unfortunately, I would have paid NOT to hear the music, which consisted of a musician playing a synthesizer playing 1960's songs. We could not eat fast enough. Unfortunately, our pre-ordered souffle was delayed (when the waiter came back to our table he asked, again, "Anything for dessert?"). Disaster.

Came here for my birthday dinner and was surprised to walk into a wedding that was going on in the main dining room. We were led to a back room which looked like and out of date banquet room with bright lights. The entrees of duck and filet mignon were good but I was disappointed 2 other items I wanted weren't available- mussels and souffle. The best part of my experience here was the cocktails and the great service.

My expectations were high, taking into account that a French restaurant near the FiDi would be one or two notches up compared to other neighborhoods. Food was okay, but nothing to write home about. Thumbs up for the beef cheeks, though, which were tender and tasty.

We were lucky to have some friends give us a ride to Pier 35 where we were going to board the "Grand Princess" for a ten day cruise to Alaska. We wanted to thank them by taking them to lunch. We were too late to book them on the Ship for a "family lunch" before embarking, so we went to O'livers and were very pleased with the food and ambience. This was our first time although they have been in the same location since 1978. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you like traditional French cooking. The atmosphere and service are very pleasant which led to a great experience before embarking on our cruise.

A double birthday dinner marked our threesome's first visit to L'Olivier. It was better than we expected. A beautiful room with plenty of space between the large tables. And quiet! Our waiter, Alex, was most considerate and very skilled; so were the other staff. Though it was not on the prix fixe menu, Alex was happy to substitute the sweetbread appetizer I craved, and it was superb. For a first-class, classical French restaurant, the prices were amazingly low, and the $18 corkage fee may be a record low these days. We will definitely be back.

  • A valentine's day review
    DavidVIP
    Dined on 2/14/2013
This is a review of a valentine's day dinner, so it may not reflect L'Olivier on ordinary nights. The ambiance had a retro feel, a place of the past without the usual decorative kitsch on the walls or music to tell that you are in a different time and place, supposedly. It was "comfortable" in a way our parents would have valued, not in the sense of something too familiar or with the guilty condescension is in the phrase "comfort food." The service was attentive and the evening romantic, in part because of an evening filled with couples, most of whom were interested in each other, rather than the ubiquitous clusters loudly complaining about work, talking shop or drinking too much. But the food? Competent. tasty. Fine.

It is a challenge in our city to offer a place with everything. The food is excellent and the service is very good. We were seated in the rather large main room at at a middle table. The tables around the periphery afforded some modicum of privacy, but the tables in the middle were set up a little close to each other and the open floorplan just didn't really provide for the most romantic Valentine's dinner ambiance I'd hoped for. However, the staff were certainly pleasant which somewhat made up for the ambiance.

Terrific service and a very nice atmosphere on Valentine's Day. I was surprised, however, that the food was just fair. I expected dishes that were beautifully, subtly seasoned, but instead got some pretty plain fare. I ate it all and left "full," but will not go back for another meal.

We couldn't have had better service. My husband had escargots to start, and was impressed they were served in shells with the proper holders. Haven't seen that in years. I've been going to L'Olivier since working in the SF Financial District in 1978 (was in Menlo Park for over 10-yrs though). They have a great daily lunch menu that consists of appetizer (soup/salad), a hefty main entree (steak, pork, chicken or fish), along with a side of vegetables for $17.50. If you want dessert, the daily price increases to $21.50 but where else can you get a quality dessert for $4? The restaurant is located near townhouses and parking garages, so it's truly a "hidden" gem. Servers are extremely attentive, the ambiance is romantic (mini Eiffel Tower on wall), and food is excellent.
