A word from St. Francis
A celebration of sustenance may best describe Chef Aaron Chamberlin’s restaurant, St. Francis. Located in a historic building on Camelback Road, just east of Central in uptown Phoenix, the family-owned, family-built and family-run restaurant welcomes patrons to a neighborhood gathering place. The repurposed space was transformed with a comfortably modern and rustic sensibility that echoes the honest, spontaneous “wood-fired cuisine. St. Francis is for everyday nourishment for families, couples and even for special occasions.
It’s for connecting with the community and sharing the pleasure of simple, honest and good food. The name, “St. Francis,” was derived from the
neighborhood land deed that dates back to 1936. It was originally owned by the Brophy family. In addition, the name, “St Francis,” is Spanish for San
Francisco, a city that figured largely in Chef Chamberlin’s background.

Maybe my expectations were too high but the food wasn't as good as I anticipated. However, my wife loved her Rice Bowl dish. Our waiter did suggest a different entrée for me but I didn't listen. I had the Pig Dip. Good but not great. Maybe too much meat and you couldn't determine flavors? The wait staff was great as was the bartender. The atmosphere is awesome. I will try again though.

I've been wanting to try this restaurant very a long time now. We had brunch Saturday and they have a fairly small menu. Got the vegetable frittata and was tasteless. The mushroom omelette was very very good. Never got our bread with the frittatas until we were ready to leave. We spent about $100 for 3 people and never got our water glasses refilled either. We left very very thirsty! Ambience is very cool, would like to come back for lunch or dinner and give them another chance.

We had a lovely late night dinner. Food was good. I enjoyed the celery root and apple soup and the fresh salad with chicken. The hint of figs was a nice touch. My husband enjoyed the chili verde. With corn bread. It seemed a rather small portion to me. I was cold during the meal and we had a large party next to us that was very noisey. I like the overal philosophy of your food approach and working with ever changing foods/menu in season. Our server shared this info and I thought that was a nice touch.

The food was good and creative, flatbreads were beautiful and tasty. Wide range of plate sizes, which is nice. The space is so beautiful! Service was a bit spotty, but it was a Friday night and the place was packed. My wine was empty for awhile as we tried to find our Waiter. A second Waiter who brought our food and helped us was wonderful - just the right amount of attentiveness without being intrusive. I will come back to try some different dishes.

I saw this restaurant on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Finally able to try it. First impression was great. The hostess was very friendly. The atmosphere was upbeat and energetic. Our server did have a rough start with attitude, but mellowed out over time. The food was just as described, "Off the Hook!" I definitely recommend eating here. I'll be back for sure. I do highly recommend reservations.

I had heard wonderful things about St. Francis. Ordered the Forbidden Rice bowl one with chicken and one with shrimp (with dressing on the side) for my guest. They first brought us both shrimp with dressing on both. Then when they brought us back the correct order they had the dressing on the side for my chicken forbidden rice bowl but not for the shrimp. And my chicken was terribly dry and tasteless. It was very disappointing as the description of the forbidden rice bowl had made it sound like it would be popping with flavor. I'm not sure I would recommend this place to anyone else since both the food and service were a disappointment.

3 of us went to St. Francis an early dinner on Easter. The place was full, but we were able to sit outside on the very nice patio. Our server, Heather, was great: efficient, excellent sense of humor, answered all of our questions, and was attentive. We were in time for Happy Hour and ordered the meatballs and some of the specialty drinks- French 111 and cucumber drink were very good ( and I'm not a fan of cucumbers). Meatballs - huge serving and delicious. Fig flatbread, "pig" sandwich, salad all yummy. We had a wonderful time and want to thank Heather for her good service and fun sense of humor! We will certainly be going back.

I went here on Easter with my family expecting to eat a late lunch at 3:15. Unfortunately, their 'all-day' menu is not in fact 'all-day.' During their happy hour from 3-6, you cannot order from their menu, only appetizers and drinks. This was not made clear on their website, which I checked twice for this information once I got there. The customer service was okay, but the staff there lacked energy, sincerity, and friendliness. The entrance was actually confusing to find, and the whole restaurant sort of felt unorganized and chaotic. I'm not sure if that's normal for their happy hour or not, but it wasn't a particularly fun environment because the tables are too close together and they are pretty small. We left before eating anything.

5 of us had dinner at St Francis on the recommendation of a friend. We arrived a little early for our reservation, but only had to wait a few minutes. Food service was a little slow, but it was a busy Saturday night, so we enjoyed each others company while waiting. The seating isn't very comfortable, some upholstery on the benches would help with that, and would also help with the noise level, which is very high. The food was very tasty, well prepared and cooked to order. The wait staff was attentive, water glasses were kept full. We tried several entrees from the menu, including the meatballs, burger and pork chili verde. We are always on the lookout for new places to try when we travel to Phoenix. St Francis did not disappoint.

I took my husband to lunch for his birthday at St Francis. I was pleased that I quickly received an email from the restaurant offering a free flatbread (which was delicious). Our server was terrific (ask to sit in Tucker's section!) and we enjoyed the Moroccan meatballs and the pig dip. The meatballs were good, but the pig dip was AMAZING! Then Tucker gave us a complimentary dessert for his birthday. What a pleasant surprise and a delicious treat (apple crumb tart). We had a wonderful experience and I plan to host his 40th birthday there next year!!

We live in Tempe and our friends live in north Scottsdale, but we dared to go our of our zip code to try St. Francis after seeing and hearing so many good review. We enjoyed the two fish dishes, Salmon and White fish and were quite pleased. We introduced ourselves to the refreshing cucumber cooler. The fire rosted brocolli was a bit of a disappointment, there was really nothing fire-roasted about it. I appeared to be a regular plate of steamed brocolli. Other than that the patio dining was pleasant given the wonderful spring weather. I would recommend St. Francis and make a point to meet more friends there to pull them out of their zipcode.

We had a late lunch / early dinner at St Francis and absolutely loved it. It was happy hour from 3-6, so we ordered a selection of different dishes and shared them. The baked goat cheese was to die for. Also enjoyed the fingerling potatoes, the moroccan meatballs and the forbidden rice. It was a nice relaxing, casual atmosphere with very firendly wait staff. Would definately come again the next time we are in town. Perfect with children as well.

This restaurant was highlighted in "Diners, Drive-ins & Dives" on the Friday evening before we came on Sunday for brunch. The only problem is that I wish that pork sandwich was available during brunch too. The tomato baked eggs were delicious. We found the olive oil pancake to be room temperature and were expecting it to be hot so that was a little bit of a disappointment. The live jazz was awesome and I'd love to come back for an early evening during the week some time.

I keep hearing about this restaurant so I decided to make reservations for an early dinner before a concert. I liked the look and "feel" of the restaurant and they had our table ready as soon we arrived. The patio was full so we were seated inside and the noise level was very distracting. I love seeing families enjoying eating out with their kids but we were seated next to a family whose little one loved to squeal & screech very loudly. The sound reverberated & made it a challenge to talk. The service started out slow but got better. Overall food was a disappointment. Overdressed salad, tasteless polenta, mediocre bread but the flatbread was very good. Toffee pudding the best! It wouldn't be on my "must" try list.

The St. Francis is just east of Central Avenue on Camelback Road. The menu has a variety of offerings, the majority of which I've really enjoyed. My personal favorite - Pork Chili Verde, served in a hot cast iron pan with a spicy pork thick stew including a roasted jalapeno pepper in the simmering sauce - topped off with a couple of fried eggs (extra chg) plus 2 wedges of homemade cornbread. The tables are on the small side and pretty close together, but if you have a larger group, there's three tables that can accommodate a minimum of 6. Parking is valet only - tip - no minimum charge. There's a side patio and small bar seating as well. The owners appear to be environmentally conscious - check out the restrooms.

Everything was good, food, service, prices, etc., but just nothing memorable. The menu looked similar to other places in town, Beckett's Table and Salty Sow are two that come to mind, only they do a better job and have more selections than St Francis. Menu was very limited, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if everything you have is great, but nothing here has the wow factor, nothing unique, but just more of what others are already doing in the valley. The Pork Chile Verde is done by everyone now, unfortunately none can match The Roaring Fork's version. Like I mentioned already, everything is good enough so you won't be disappointed, but just don't expect anything to knock your socks off.

3 of us had delicious entrees. The 4th asked for his burger to be well done. It was served very rare. He sent it back & everyone else finished their meals & the plates were cleared before his burger came back. It was very well done & dry. Had to mention to our wonderful waiter that management didn't come by. He told the manager who then came by to apologize. It was blamed on a very disorganized kitchen. Manager used "disarray." As in, we are in complete disarray tonight. So not what we've experienced in the past.
