Tombo's was "friendly" for folks of all ages. Menu was simple yet diverse and offered something for everyone in terms of taste and cost. Reasonable prices, local use of foods. Shrimp and grits very creamy, hefty portion! Salads fresh and sizeable. The fried okra was superb. It was cut lengthwise and fried with a great coating. Yummy. Would return regularly to sample their daily, fresh specials.

I love this place. The food is consistently good, the service is spot on, and the staff are knowledgeable about what they are serving. They also recognize the importance of the loyalty of their clientele. My husband and I, usually with a couple of friends, eat their once a week. Love having Tombo Grille in the neighborhood.

This was my first time going to Tombo Grille, and what an amazing find it is! I can't believe such an amazing restaurant has been in such close proximity to me without my knowledge. Tombo Grille is the best of what neighborhood restaurants have to offer. Much of the produce is purchased locally. The food is devine. They have a wonderful wine list. And the service was wonderful. We received our food quickly, and out waiter was friendly & knowledgeable.

Tombo is a great little gem in Forest Acres. Don't be fooled by its location, it is a nice restaurant with amazing food. The wine list is extensive, wait staff is excellent, and the food is to die for. They have great deals during the week to also be on the lookout for. I suggest trying their specials, as it is a truly unique experience.

  • Twice in 3 days for identical meal!
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 1/9/2014
My wife and I enjoyed the salmon so much we returned two days later and made identical choices. She had a wedge salad while I had the fried chicken live and polenta appetizer and we both had salmon over jasmine rice and chocolate cream pie. The chef blends a little spinach and tiny capers into the jasmine rice and it is very good - a little like rissoto. Service is always excellent and parking is usually no problem.

Food was good and the atmosphere was nice, not too over the top. The music on Monday was excellent and a definite highlight. The only negative is that the restaurant is not well seen from the road, we drove by it with a GPS and didn't see it. It is located right across the street from the Trader Joe's on Forrest Drive.

We live in the neighborhood and frequent Tombo's. I was shocked that the toast points served with the cheese place were burnt. Not just a little, but all pieces were burnt. We chose Tombo's to dine as we had a stressful week and wanted a quiet evening out. I just wasn't up to dealing with addressing this with the waiter so we left the burnt toast on the plate. I recommend not only the chef check the food before sending it out, but the waiter should have noticed it and not served it.

  • Tombo "Date-night" special

    Dined on 10/19/2013
We would recommend this restaurant, not for any of the choices above, but for the chef. He is obviously quite fine and well-trained! The menu was limited, but imaginative. This, our first experience at Tombo's, proved to be rather ordinary -- except for the food. An elderly couple, we used a date night special coupon and found it was too much of a bar scene and crowd for us to really enjoy the evening as a restaurant experience. Nothing wrong with a houseful of people enjoying themselves loudly; it's a sign of camaraderie and having fun together. It just was not our way of having an evening of quiet celebration of our wedding anniversary. The service was good and the waitress was attentive..

We celebrated a recent birthday at Tombos. The food and service was awesome. It really was memorable . We got a steak dinner, scallops , crab cake , and iceberg wedge salad. The steak was fork tender and extremely flavorful. The seafood was great and fresh. I love the farm to table approach to cooking. Our server was knowledgable and charming. He also gave a spot on beer recommendation .

  • The porkchop's the thing
    MhMFoodie
    Dined on 10/3/2013
The waitress was slow and seemed distracted and kept forgetting things we'd ordered. The appetizer (roasted red pepper hummus) was good but not stellar. My daughter and I were a bit disappointed in the salmon; it didn't have much flavor, and the rice bed upon which is sat was downright crunchy. My daughter didn't mind but I sent mine back for more cooking. My husband's porkchop was fabulous--thicker than any I've seen recently, juicy, done to perfection and the bed of veggies under it was divine. I'd go back for the chop but I'll hope for better wait staff, which can make or break a restaurant visit, regardless of the food's quality. The blondie for dessert, topped with gelato, was worthy of the chop.

We have enjoyed Tombo several years. We just found out way to it by chance and have been returning ever since. We live in Charlotte and will make our trips get us to Tombo when near Columbia. Local food supply and great creations are an attraction. Staff is attentive but unobtrusive. A nice wine selection compliments the varying menu. Prices are reasonable. Was a bit out of the way from the campus but went anyway based on the reviews The menu was limited which is typically a good thing meaning they should master these few dishes On the three menu items none were good in taste or presentation The quail and pork were very salty. Noodles with quail were tasteless and swimming in broth Pork was very standard and well passed the medium rare ordered These were the two highly recommended dishes Service was not attentive at the reception, seating nor during the meal No manager nearby to ask how everything was The waitress forgot the second glasses of wines Wine by the glass were not good and small The dishes concepts were somewhat good but not the execution!

Although we had read favorable reviews of the Tombo Grill, we had avoided driving the three miles or so out of downtown Columbia. This time was different. Though their menu was limited, we found the food (we ordered short ribs, Cornish game hens, and scallops) to be outstanding. One appetizer, fried Brussels sprouts, was particularly noteworthy. Make the trip. It will be worth the 10 minutes it will take.

This little neighborhood gem looked very promising when we sat down but the live music soon drowned out all hope of conversation for our group. The food was good and the service very professional, but the whole experience was spoiled by the din coming from the bandstand.
