A word from NECI on Main
Imagine the entire state of Vermont as a food experiment or as its own laboratory where food products are grown and created for this particular climate; seasonally, organically, and sustainably. Now imagine restaurants as teaching laboratories this restaurant for instance.

NECI on Main is a production lab for New England Culinary Institute. For 30 years we have been teaching students to make connections with farmers, between the landscape and our food, and between seasons and culinary traditions. Sometimes we include food items that express a particular sense of place from outside of Vermont, or culinary traditions from other cultures, and use those items or experiences to enhance the foods grown here in Vermont.

Our menu is no exception in this teaching philosophy, and reflects the best that Vermont’s farmers, and America’s next generation of young chefs offer.

This was our first time making reservations through OpenTable.com and since we were coming a great distance and were on a tight schedule, it was wonderful to have the security of a reservation made with such ease. We were greeted warmly and seated promptly. Our waiter was attentive. Now to the food---it was wonderful! I don't recall the entire menu, but I had the sweet potato gnocchi over creamed leeks and it was heavenly. The prices, by the way, are very reasonable. I would highly recommend this restaurant---and urge you to check out the window (on the way to the rest rooms) where you can observe the chefs-in-training at work.

The overall experience was wonderful. The service was a little bit behind but they were understaffed the day that we were there. One of the students came to check on the table one or more times and I thought that that showed pride in his work. Overall I had a wonderful time and hope to dine there again in the not to distant future.

I took a party of 12 here, and everyone was beyond impressed. We all had salads and apps, a fantastic entree, and most of us had saved room for dessert. We were visiting from out of town and found the place on the inn's website, and we're so glad we did. We're going back next year!

Taking in stride that NECI is a training program, we had a good time. My order was misunderstood twice though, so that was disappointing. We did get an apology from one of the kitchen managers though, and the re-order was prompt and no beauty of presentation or quality was lost.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 10/11/2008
A recent Saturday brunch unfortunately left us feeling that quality has declined. We would have preferred a bread basket to the cupcake-sweet muffins we were served. The Angus burger came with a raw interior--we had asked for medium rare, the fries were unremarkable and barely warm, and the Caesar salad would have been better if less smothered in heavy dressing. The desserts, like the muffins, were overly sweetened, and unremarkable. We preferred the old buffet format with its wider selection of better food.

Ordered medium rare it was brought to the table cooked about a half centimeter all around and well under rare internally..Black and Blue prehaps. Upon being politely sent back to the kitchen it was returned to the table on the same plate.Still cooked incorrectly. With no lettuce or tomato as requested and ordered orginally..And the same burger with a bite taken out of it and half eaten pickle. As a former exec chef in NYC this was completely unaccepatable. It was then returned to the kitchen.Came back to the table..New plate.New burger etc..AND MICROWAVED ..Waste of time and palet

It's a culinary school-staffed place after all, so it's bound to have some uneveness. Yet our wait staff was great - suggesting a special Sauvingnon Blanc not on the list (which we ordered and loved.) That said, skip the calamari -- its batter yucky soggy, and too spicy to boot. The salmon was only fair (it was overcooked) but the yummy desserts and really top notch coffee left us happy overall. Previous visits have been solid so we'll be back.

Have been here in the past and it was excellent. I am totally aware that it is staffed by NECI students. My daughter was looking into applying to this school. This time: very disappointed. Had to wait 1 hr 15 mins to receive appetizer: veg tempura: loaded w/ salt. Told the wait was due to computer system being down. Gee, what happened to pen and paper? Salmon over cooked; steak fatty/tough and over cooked. Vegetable cold. Dessert: pavlova: still raw inside and fruit tased funny. We did not finish any of our food and told the waitress why: no one came to discuss. Will not go back to give it another try.

I was looking forward to introducing a friend to your restaurant, however, we were very disappointed. First, we were shown to a booth near the kitchen which was noisy. We requested and were given a new table. But then, no one waited on us, and we had to ask for service. My friend and I wondered if these affronts were because we were two women. The wine I selected from the menu was not available. The slow roasted salmon I ordered was tough and I could not finish it. My friend's pork was not tender. I appreciated the fact that I was not charged for my meal. The soups and cheese plate were very good, although you should serve more bread with the cheese. I know this is a learning experience for you - I hope you benefit from my comment

This was our second visit to this restaurant in the past month. Based on our first experience I would have rated it a five as everything was excellent. Our most recent visit was a little different experience. My wife and I ordered fish and chips. The fish was tough, like it wasn't done. We told the waiter and he gladly took it back and brought a new meal that was ready for another party. Unfortunately the same thing. They explained to us after that it wasn't how it was cooked. Something was wrong with the fish. They gave us a menu to order something different which we did. The third meal was good. The waiter and manager apologized but there was no break on the prices or a complimentary dessert or drink. We thought there should have been.

This was our third visit to the Main Street Grill and Bar and it was the one we were least impressed with. We went on Good Friday and had hoped for more fish selections. They had a regular salmon dish on the menu and a special which was a fish which tasted similar to salmon. That was a disappointment to me as I do not enjoy salmon. I then chose the osso bucco entree. The risotto that was served with the osso bucco was HORRIBLE. It has no flavor and the consistency of paste. It was a great disappointment as we had such wonderful experiences there the previous two times.
