A word from Yakitori Tori Shin
Tori Shin is Not your ordinary grilled chicken definitely not your usual Japanese restaurant. Bincho-tan(charcoal) yakitori, organic chicken, fine sake and sho-chu. In NewYork, there are a growing number of Yakitori restaurants, but Tori Shin stays true to it's roots, and true to the art. Tori Shin is the only bonafide yakitoriya (chicken griller) with over 40 different unique chicken skewers offered. And Tori Shin remains the only yakitoriya directly linked to a highly-respected, and successful yakitoriya in Tokyo, Japan.
We are proud and grateful of compliments from our Japanese patrons as being true-to style of the Tokyo food culture scene, but our dream was to share this Tokyo experience with others. Since the beginning, our mission was to promote the most authentic, Tokyo stile yakitori experience, using the highest quality ingredients, hence the name Tori Shin: True chicken. Seatings are mainly at the counter, with cook performances.

I went to the restaurant a few times, but last saturday make me re-think my opinion. The service was terrible, the food all burned, a lot of items out of stock and finally because of that they change some of the regular dishes of the menu to lower quality ones without ask the consumers if they want still to keep the order. I strogly don't recomend this restaurant!

Very good yakitori place. Each skewer is grilled perfectly. Clean simple flavors. The highlight was the special oyakodon. I would love to have that bowl for lunch any day of the week! The liver yakitori was quite memorable too. It was just perfectly grilled. All other skewers were really good too. if you like chicken, you shouldn't miss out. go to tori shin and leave it to the chef's tasting menu.

The prices were extremely high, even for NY standards. The food was solid, the service was very good and on our way out there was a large line of people waiting to enter. We enjoyed nearly all the food that we were served, we had the $55 tasting menu but with the extra's added in our bill was shockingly high. We won't be going back simply because we felt the prices were out of line. Net, net, the food is good, just keep an eye on all the small plates added on.

There are several "yakitori" places in NY. Be far, this is the best and most authentice. Reminds me of "yakitori" shops in Tokayo filled with smoke from grill and ability to interact with the chef to talk about the specials for the day. There are some rare chicken parts that you never thought eating.

Came here with a first date, it was really fun. We did the tasting menu which turned out to be a fun way to live review each dish as we got it. Most of them were delicious and were some form of chicken. There was one or two plates I didn't much care for though. The wait staff was attentive and knowledgable. I wasn't blown away, but I'd probably return here and would suggest it to try.

I am Japanese who is living in Mexico now. This time, I went to New York at the vacation. It examined on the Internet and TORISHIN was chosen. It is because the reputation was high when YAKITORI was delicious. It was a taste at a high level that far exceeded my imagination. In Japan, I do not know the YAKITORI restaurant where TORISHIN is exceeded either. Not only the taste but also the serving level is a high restaurant.

  • Best Yakitori in NYC
    OpenTable Diner Since 2004VIP
    Dined on 4/7/2011
For my money (and they are not cheap) Tori Shin is the best yakitori restaurant in NYC. You feel transported to Japan with a fully Japanese staff and predominantly Japanese customers - always a sign of quality Japanese food. The focus here is the chicken - and it will be unlike any chicken you've had elsewhere in NYC. I'd say Yakitori Totto is a close second, but Tori Shin's singular focus on the bird is what sets it apart. They've expanded their menu recently to include a few more meat options, and while they are also very good, the chicken is the star. My personal favorite is the Ichiyaboshi, a dried chicken tenderloin. We order plate after plate of this nearly every time we visit. Really a fantastic experience.

First of all, let's categorize this place as "izakaya" (japanese sake place with nibbles). Within the Izakaya group in NYC, this perhaps is the best place for the food: authentic, fresh and true to japanese identity (meaning flavor doesn't come from the spices, but rather from the main ingredient itself). What is lacking is the drink menu: it's not easy to read through and understand the menu. I wish omakase came with the sake pairing with the yakitori.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2006VIP
    Dined on 2/25/2011
Having a reservation on Opentable only means you get on the queue once you get there. this place still make you wait 30+ minutes on the side for your seat. Quality of the yakitori depends on whether you're lucky enough to sit in front of the owner. The owner does a masterful job but the skill levels of the others are just so bad in controlling the fire that it feels you're getting a steamed piece of meat...

Excellent food and great service! We go there every time when we visit New York, and it has never let us down. However, servers there do not speak English very well, and my Japanese is very very poor, it creates confusion sometimes... But, overall, it is a great place for you to relax and enjoy good sake and Japanese BBQ. Highly recommend for people who is willing to try authentic Asisan food.

It was so great dinner with great service. Next time, I'll check the soup first.
