Tried Il Canale for lunch after becoming tired of paying $25 and up for a plate of pasta. White pizza with buffalo mozzarella was good. Very thin crust, as advertised. But not a wow. Linguine with clams was good, too. Al dente, flavorful white wine sauce, but my friend's penne with mushrooms was disappointing. All in all okay, but won't rush back.

We heard about his restaurant from friends who share our love of Italian food. It's an attractive place. We made a reservation and were kept waiting only a minute. The seating and table placement upstairs was a little awkward--the three of us, sitting at a table set for 4, were never able to find enough room to be completely comfortable. It was the food, however, that we came for and it was indeed outstanding. The home made bread (nicely crusty) with oil and garlic, salad with a very nice light dressing, and fresh made pasta were all excellent. But the very best was their thin-crust pizza. On a recent trip to Italy I had pizza almost every day. Il Canale may serve the best Neopolitan pizza I have had in the US. I can't wait to return.

This was my third time at Il Canale and it was again incredible. The bottle of wine we ordered (which was their 'special' and was discounted in price - which I like a lot), was wonderful! We started with an order of calamari, which is by far the best I have ever had. Then the pizza and pasta was out of this world. Definitely check Il Canale out if you have not yet done so. But be sure to make a reservation!!

I have been to Il Canale several times and the food never falters. On this occasion I ordered calamari for an appetizer and the eggplant pizza for the entree. So delicious! The food came out quickly and the servers were very attentive. My only two complaints are that we were sat next to two large parties and they didn't provide an ice bucket for our wine. I felt like I had to yell across my two top table to speak with my friend. Also, toward the end of the wine (which we brought ourselves) it became warm. Other than that, it was so delicious and I will be back again!

We came specifically for their pizza, which is terrific! Very authentic Italian food with diners that are Italian, as well. They have an all day menu for Sunday, which is great if you eat at an odd hour. The tunarella salad is wonderful and so fresh tasting. Great place.

If you show up and find the place packed with people (of all ages) waiting to eat their outstanding pizza. Be patient... It's well worth your wait. But we LOVE the gnocchi's - they are heavenly. You have to get on a plane and fly to Italy to find better! Seriously! Our friends from Italy agree.

In the sense that I've had the same tourist food along the Grand Canal in Venice and here at Il Canale, yes like Venice. The pizza oven is very nice, imparting good crustiness, but the sauce made the middle soggy and the pizzaiolo threw TONS of salt on the pizza. The host was alert and trying, but servers and other waitstaff just untrained and dissonant, despite appearing to want to please. I can't think of a good reason to return.

This place has a lot going for it -- the location right on the canal (hence the name), friendly service, an authentic Italian feel and taste. The pizza is great -- and how lovely that they offer samples while you wait by the entrance! We enjoyed nice wine that comes in a carafe with enough for a glass and a half -- perfect amount and it allows for each of us to select a different style. In addition to the pizza, the salad was great, as well as an eggplant parmigiana and a lovely salad. The only down side of this busy spot is the noise level -- it is the only thing that would keep me from coming back more often. Request a table downstairs for less noise.

Stopped by this little gem for restaurant week - had the calamari appetizer, the Il Canale pizza, and the tiramisu. Loved the spicy sauce that came with the app, the pizza was huge, but could have been left in the oven for a few more minutes, and the tiramisu had A LOT of rum in it. The wait staff was impeccable. Really enjoyed our visit and will most certainly be back!

I later had a pizza which was delicious. Also do forget to try the tiramisu. I really enjoyed everything there and will def go again.

I am not opposed to a delivery bacon cheeseburger pizza from the joint down the street just like the next guy, BUT, when I want the real deal we leave the 'burbs and go to Il Canale. The tomato sauce on the pizza tastes like ripe tomatoes. They use smokey mozzarella which lends a depth to the flavor.

Il Canale is our favourite restaurant in the DC area. There are other restaurants with food that we have enjoyed as much or even more perhaps but no other restaurant that we have visited delivers its specialty (true Pizza, ie Neapolitan style) to a higher standard. The pizza Diavola is the best that we have tasted and the wine list, although small, has some excellent ones that suit the food and at reasonable prices. This isn't a place for common US style pizza such as Papa John's, Pizza Hut or Domino's, nor is it Chicago thick crust style such as found at Uno. Rather this is pizza in the authentic style of the region that originated the dish, and executed to a very high standard. If you like proper Italian pizza then try Il Canale!

If you are looking for authentic Sicilian food, look no more. This was my second time dining at Il Canale, and it was just as delicious as the first. We had the calamari appetizer, which was incredible and one of their pizzas which was just perfect. My husband had a calzone which was good, but very heavy. The caprice salad left something to be desired, but fit the bill. Definitely check out Il Canale when you are in Georgetown! But be sure to make a reservation, as it gets very crowded on the weekends.

We wanted to take our daughter out to dinner near her G-Town condo. Found this on OpenTable. Reviews were great. Have lived in the DC area for 40 years and was not familiar with the restaurant. Pizza was wonderful, mozarella "ball" was great, eggplant parmesan appetizer was a meal. Got foccacia instead of bread - worth the $5. They had pizza slices at the door as samples (margherita) so I had a slice there and the rest of the family ordered pizza at the table. As good or better than 2 Amys. Will go back.

My wife and I came here upon the recommendation of a friend of our son, who lives in DC. We absolutely loved this place. The service was top notch. Our waiter recommended a perfect wine for us. As appetizers, we had the Focaccia Bread and the Prosciutto with Bufalo Mozzarella and they were both delicious. I had Spaghetti and an additional two meatballs. The sauce was delicious and reminded my of my mother's home made sauce. The spaghetti was cooked perfectly and the meatballs were among the best meatballs I have ever had dining out. My wife ordered a pasta and salmon dish and she thought it was delicious. Our desert was Tiramisu with Cappuccino coffees and they were perfect too. On a cold, icy night, this place was packed with diners.

This was our first time at Il Canale and it was splendid! The space is very cozy; the wait staff, friendly and knowledgable; and the food, superb. We had pasta dishes and pizza -- all freshly made and wonderfully seasoned. The pasta is done 'al dente'; so, it has a little more substance. The thin crust pizza seems to melt in your mouth. What impresssed us most is a more European attitude toward hte diners -- we weren't rushed and felt would could have had the table for the evenining if we wished to just talk. We'll go back again. It was a super experience.
