Looked forward to eating here, but was disappointed. I will say the seared escolar would be the one reason I might come back - it was delicious. But the other items we had ranged from good to so-so. The crab cake appetizer was alright. The seared Scottish salmon was dry. The sticky bun bread pudding was blah. And the fabled sticky buns - well they offered our party of two - two buns. There was never any offer of replenishing the basket. And the stories of getting some to take home for the next day breakfast - well now they'll sell you a half dozen for $10. Our waiter was exasperating. He seemed to spend an overlong time at new arrival tables explaining the menu - actually just repeating what was already writtten there.

I have been going to El Chorro for years and was so delighted with the update. It still has an amazing ambience...just improved and updated.I loved how they kept the same white chairs on the patio....but punched it up with crisp blue and white...adn a much expanded and amazing patio. The food was fabulous and the wait staff attentive.I was there as a host for a business lunch...and it coudl not have been better.

This was our first trip to El Chorro. Everyone in town,I think, wanted to be there. We were directed to an itty bitty table crammed in betweeen other diners and I did not want that. So we were seated in an over sized booth- it was great! I am happy that this restaurant has made the return bid, and we will return soon to dine!

The renovation of El Chorro enhanced its original ambiance and charm. Excellent job with the renovation including the expanded outdoor patios, interior dining and bar layout in the main dining area. Original bar area is still intimate and maintained its original cozy "feel" with the added renovation upgrades. Overall an excellent dining experience for locals and snowbirds alike!

Our experience for Sunday Brunch was spectacular. Our server was Tracey and she was fantastic, very attentive to our needs. Three of us had the crab cake Eggs Benedict. Others had the steak and eggs and the chicken enchiladas and eggs. Everything was delicious. And of course the sticky buns, they were great too. I look forward to dining at El Chorro again real soon.

El Chorro for Brunch was a great idea. There were 4 of us and we enjoyed the Stacked Enchiladas, Steak and Eggs w/ a side of Crab Cakes, the French Toast, Sticky Buns (still a favorite)all while enjoying the view and a nice bottle of Champagne. A couple of us in our group had been to El Chorro previously for Happy Hour and enjoyed the Happy hour as well. I do hope the live group starting at 6:30 will always play it was fun having live entertainment while noshing on the very wonderful pork sliders.

My dining partners and I were very disappointed in our experience. We had to wait 45 minutes for our reservation in a VERY noisy bar. We thought that the prices were very high, $70 for 4 drinks, $20 for a shrimp cocktail. I have always loved El Chorro, but the new El Chorro is not going to be the regular haunt that it once was for our group.

Our waiter Phillip was personable and knowledgeable, the rep from the wine purveyor stopped at our table when we ordered a bottle of Silver Oak Cab which was delightful. However, I sat w/my finished dinner plate for a half hour and finally asked the busboy to please clear the table. All in all though, a very delightful evening and have recommended the place to many friends. Mark

The band in the bar was really loud and it made it hard to talk and hear in the dining room. The service was terrible. It took an hour to get our main course, AFTER our starters had been served. Terrible. I'll come back for happy hour on the patio, because the location is beautiful, but I will not spend the money to eat again. It was way too expensive for what we got and the atmosphere.

  • The setting was stunning.
    KayeVIP
    Dined on 2/26/2010
The setting was stunning. This has always been our favorite of all favorites, but the food really missed the mark. The $30 "colossal" fried shrimp (from the old menu they said, but not true) were as big as my little finger. The $44 rosemary lamb consisted of two small chops and had the nastiest red sour dopling of something on top. When we passed another table going out, a guest had much larger shrimp, but nothing like it used to be. Perhaps they will get the kinks out, but it's clear, this is not the El Chorro menu we loved for years. Too bad. The setting is spectacular and the renovation is gorgeous.

    Dined on 2/24/2010
We have lived in Phoenix for 17 years and would go to El Chorro Lodge with my husband's elderly parents for brunch and take our children to dinner there several times a year. It was part of our holiday tradition to go for a formal dinner and then to the ballet--El Chorro was perfect for that. However, the updating done at the restaurant this year has taken advantage of the world class views, taken dining into the current century, and given the "old girl" new life. I won't be surprised if it becomes one of the Valley's favorite restaurants and wedding venues. It was comfortable, stylish, and the service was outstanding. I'll be dining there much more frequently in the future.

Love the renovation.. disappointing to learn that despite the huge increase in outside dining and bar area the kitchen remains the same..this could prove to be a problem as time goes by. The redesign and expansion retained the beloved ambiance. This gem remains unparalled as a local institution for high quality comfort food nestled in a prime location. The sticky rolls have been reduced in size, were too sticky...like the caramel sauce was not baked but simply pured over the buns. The order brought to our table were unraveling strips and sent back. Some old favorites like Shad roe, chicken livers, beef stroganoff have been removed.

El Chorro is just as great as always.....even better. I love everything they have done and it is so great to see many familiar faces back. It has been re-done with such class and grace and is going to be around much longer than I am !!!! It is an "institution" for many of us who lived here all our lives. I will say I miss my chickenlivers on the menu, but hopefully they will return at some time....at least many of the other favorites are still available. Sincere congratulations to all...and wishing you continued success.

El Chorro Lodge, which we have visited many times over the last 42 years, has changed a great deal after its recent renovation and takeover by new management. It is somewhat larger and more open than before and has lost some of its old western charm. It is also more commercial, but the food was excellent as was the service. We were seated at a high table near the bar and the room was very noisy. But the sticky buns were there, a reminder of the old place, and everyone enjoyed their meal

We were very excited to return to the place of our courtship years, and were very impressed with the beauty of the "new" El Chorro. The views from all around are absolutely magnificent, lending itself to quite a romantic scene. We were also very happy to discover that the bar area had pretty much remained the same with a few much needed modifications to add more seating, etc. That room is definitely one for the very nostalgic and sentimental, as are my husband and I. We were greeted by several with much courtesy and promptness. The service that evening was impeccable, as was our dinner. No, the waiting was so worth what we encountered. It appears that El Chorro will continue to build fond memories for us, which makes us very happy.

The "new" El Chorro appears to still be on a shake-down cruise. The hostess wasn't prepared to sit us when we arrived for our lunch reservation on-time; 2 menus given for a group of 4 people. When we asked the waiter for 2 additional menus he approached the hostess who told him that he couldn't bring us the menus but that she would deliver them (5 minutes later). One of our diner's meals was delivered to the table 5 minutes before the entrees for the other diners. The waiter did apologize for the slow service, however. The food was palatable but not up to par for the prices -- the lone exception was the excellent clam chowder. A simple BLT was an abomination -- soggy bread, avocado spread and a miniature tomato slice.
