A word from El Chorro
El Chorro’s iconic setting at the base of Camelback & Mummy Mountains offers an authentic Arizona desert setting where generations of Valley residents and visitors alike come to savor classic, seasonal cuisine; enjoy a relaxed Sunday brunch; gather with friends over happy hour; celebrate special occasions or meet with associates.

El Chorro’s culinary vision features classic cuisine favorites with a Southwestern-inspired influence. The menu offerings center on fresh, organic and locally grown ingredients – including herbs and produce from the El Chorro garden located right outside the kitchen.

El Chorro Lodge has always been my favorite restaurant, so I took my friends there for dinner expecting a great meal. I understand there are new owners and the place was renovated. While the ambiance was very good, the food was poor. My one friend didn't even finish her salad because it was bitter. I was disappointed and embarrassed because I know my friends were not satisfied. I will not go there again.

  • The much anticipated return
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008VIP
    Dined on 3/5/2010
The much anticipated return of this legendary restaurant has the locals clamering with negative comments, myself included. Although the arcitectural changes are impressive, the food was LOUSY. The flash fried lobster is no longer "flash fried" or served as a whole tail. It is now served on what most would consider an appetizer plate and sits on a paper napkin which is greasy from the over deep fried, pieces of lobster. This reminds me of what dinner at Red Lobster would be like. Also disappoining was the relish tray which shrunk in size. If you are going to continue serving this El Chorro tradition, make it worthwhile. 4 people can not share 1 of these trays. Also disappointing was the dwarfed house salad and spiced up ranch dressing.

I took my friend to El Chorro for her birthday lunch...we had a lovely table on the patio looking at Camelback Mountain. There were ample umbrellas for shaded seating. The sticky buns were so good we each took an order home with us after lunch. The food was excellent as was the service. I'll be bringing my husband the next time!

Keep those sticky buns coming!!! I ordered the Fish & Chips, somewhere in there was the fish hidden by all the batter, good taste but very thin, however; OH MY, the french fries were cooked in truffle oil and what a taste! YUMMY! You have to try them!!! Our server Elizabeth was excellent; knoledgeable, cute, funny, and very attentive, didn't miss a beat. I highly reccomend walking the grounds, you are not going to want to leave. Nice job!!!!

The atmosphere is very nice. The service is excellent. The food does not hold up to the standard one would expect for the price. In fact, it was very disappointing. The vegetables were dry and very unattractive, the English muffin under the eggs benedict could not be cut with a serrated knife. They took the chicken livers off the menu and that dish was one of the good things they had on the menu. Sticky buns were good. I have been going to this place for over 30 years. Probably won't go again.

Had lunch At El Chorro the 4th & 5th - somehow got the same server twice in a row. She was very personable and friendly but clearly not an experienced server. After lunch was served, she did not check with us either day to see if everything was as requested - in fact on Fri we never saw her again for approx 30 minutes. It took 20 mins to get the check on Thurs - on Fri I asked for lemon wedges for my shrimp and never got them!! We had a guest from New York who loved the place and was going to order dessert, but after 20 minutes of waitng (after the dessert menus were handed out) she gave up and we left. Missed opportunity for El Chorro. If no one speaks up, these hiccups don't get corrected.

The ambiance was great. Know it is all new,so things need to be tweaked. Took 25 minutes to be seated, even though we had reservations. Our server was very nice. The biggest problem was it took forever to receive our food. The salads were slow in arriving and there must have been 40-45 minutes until we had our entrees. Great location, remodeled beautifully and we will come back again.

Party of 3. Arrived on time for our reservation. Were asked to wait in the bar while our table was readied. Waited almost 15 minutes before someone took our drink order (after I caught the waitresses eye). When we were finally seated, almost 1 hour after our reservation time, we were seated, given menus, and bread (without butter). Again we waited. I had to go to the front desk and voice our "concerns" as this was a birthday treat for my husband. Not only had we not seen our waitress for almost 20-25 minutes, no one bothered to check on our table. Not only did we have to ask for their signature complimentary relish tray, the food was "meager" and mediocre for the price. Hopefully these are all grand opening bugs.

The food is Good, not memorable but not bad however, the Sticky Buns are still heavenly. The setting is terrific, the reason to eat here is the location, location, location! I've frequented El Chorro for many years and am delighted that the new owners enlarged on the existing charm and did not try to change the vibe. Congratulations!

We have been frequent visitors over the last 15 years at the old El Chorro. On this night, we took a group of 7 people to the new El Chorro. We congratulate the new owners for maintaining as much of the old charm as practical when renovating to their new foot print. The new outdoor bar area is a significant improvement, and the increase in indoor seating makes the weather forecast less of a factor. The service was excellent. The menu selection was a little disappointing. Several of us missed the old menu option of pan fried chicken. Two had steaks which were cooked to satisfaction and had wonderful flavor. One person in our group had cab cakes and shimp both of which were nothing out of the ordinary.

Looked forward to eating here, but was disappointed. I will say the seared escolar would be the one reason I might come back - it was delicious. But the other items we had ranged from good to so-so. The crab cake appetizer was alright. The seared Scottish salmon was dry. The sticky bun bread pudding was blah. And the fabled sticky buns - well they offered our party of two - two buns. There was never any offer of replenishing the basket. And the stories of getting some to take home for the next day breakfast - well now they'll sell you a half dozen for $10. Our waiter was exasperating. He seemed to spend an overlong time at new arrival tables explaining the menu - actually just repeating what was already writtten there.

The setting was stunning. This has always been our favorite of all favorites, but the food really missed the mark. The $30 "colossal" fried shrimp (from the old menu they said, but not true) were as big as my little finger. The $44 rosemary lamb consisted of two small chops and had the nastiest red sour dopling of something on top. When we passed another table going out, a guest had much larger shrimp, but nothing like it used to be. Perhaps they will get the kinks out, but it's clear, this is not the El Chorro menu we loved for years. Too bad. The setting is spectacular and the renovation is gorgeous.
