A word from Alice's Restaurant
"Great food, comfortable drink" is the mission, but at Alice’s, it's about much more than that. With a broad deck that overlooks the main stretch of Lake Hopatcong, fresh produce from nearby Halsey Island, and a naturally simple (but rustic) decor, Alice's is a place that celebrates lake living and good company.

Lake Hopatcong resident Alice Szigethy opened Alice's in June 2009 to expand the selection of lake destinations. In this reinvention of a building that had been a series of eateries over several decades, the space features vaulted ceilings, reclaimed-barn-wood walls, comfy booths, and a full bar that extends from the airy interior to the breezy deck. A mahogany seating bar runs the length of the deck so guests can sit and enjoy a clear panorama of the water, and an austere metal awning gives outdoor diners a shady place to enjoy the view, the breeze-and, of course, the food.

Alice's Restaurant was a real find and we will be returning. It is a rustic building situated on Lake Hopatcong, with a gorgeous view of the lake. There is a good sized outdoor patio where you can dine or have a few drinks overlooking the lake. Food was excellent. We went for brunch, which is a two-course meal. We both started with chopped salad, which was excellent. There were several soups and appetizers to pick from two. For our second course, we had the steak and eggs, which was the best skirt steak I have ever had. Ask for it medium rare. The other dish we tried was the roast chicken breast with barley, snow peas and greens. This was also very well done. The service was excellent.

Had high expectations for Alice's and some were met, others not. We were there on Good Friday and expected to have at least a few choices of fish to choose from. The fish of the day was a mixed fish stew, not at all what I think of for fish of the day and standard farm-raised Atlantic Salmon. Our server was not interested in our concerns about the fish and had somewhat a take it or leave it attitude. I can say the scallops dish 3 of us had was very well prepared and clearly fresh scallops were used which made the meal very enjoyable. Wine list was limited but adequate and the bar scene was hopping. Will definitely go back without the kids next time to enjoy the great view of the lake!

Once the confusion over who was serving us was settled, the meal was wonderful. We sat inside since it was a miserable march night, but it's easy to imagine this place having amazing evening views in better weather. We had a fun appetizer - a mini tower of avacado, raw tuna, and scallions that was very good. I had the filet mignon with truffled potato purée - fantastic. Expensive but worth it. My wife had seared mahi mahi with ratatouille that was good - not as good as the filet, but tasty and worth the price. We had some okay wine by the glass. I personally think wine selection was one of their weak points, but they have all of the basics covered. Very nice apple tarts, creme brûlée, and coffee finished out the meal!

We enjoyed our meal at Alice's this past weekend. Mostly a casual menu. The soups were great, as were our dinners. The staff was very friendly, knew the menu and checked in several times to see if everything was ok. Great view of the lake.

This was our second visit to Alice's and we were quite disappointed, which was a change from our first visit. The skirt steak was tasteless and the sea scallops were very small and too salty. The chicken strips were overcooked and dry.

We arrived on time for our 7PM reservation. We were told that our table was given to another group at 6:30PM. We had to wait for over 70 minutes for the booth. We had to wait for at least 25 minutes for our food. My wife and I where dissatified with our meals. Our friends were not. The most enjoyable part of the evening was sitting at the bar where the bartender and the drinks were wonderful.

Everything was good. The service was a little slow and we waited for a bit. In summer the view over the lake is quite nice.

Rustic lakeside setting with friendly staff and great food. Menu is simple but there is a good variety and the presentation is wonderful. Alas, the wine list is short, but again there is variety and it is reasonably priced. Excellent value.

  • We had a really nice time

We had a really nice time at the restaurant. The waitstaff was outstanding - couldn't do enough. A really nice touch was chef taking the time to have a word with us. The food was really plate-licking good. We had the meatloaf, the vegetarian, the skirt steak, the salmon, and the fish-and-chips. All wonderful. What we would have liked to see different was to add a few veggies to the skirt steak and a scoop of mashed or rice to the salmon plates. This would not deter us however, from returning again (and soon). We would also HIGHLY recommend the apple tart. We sampled a few of the desserts and this one got the gold star. We look forward to returning in the summer also, when we can sit on the deck and admire the view of the lake.

Had been wanting to try this restaurant for months and was not disappointed at all. The decor was wonderful with comfortable booths and a great view of the lake. I was thrilled with my food selection and the food was so fresh and tasty. I can't wait to go back again and bring my friends.

It was a very cold night and every time the door opened we were thoroughly chilled. While the Maitre D' explained that this would be corrected shortly, it was very uncomfortable. food and service was good. Menu $ was very reasonable.

The food, the ambience and service were all great but there was one drawback. Everytime the outside door was opened, there was a terrible draft. This may not be a problem in the other season but on the lake in January, it was very cold.
