A word from Alice's Restaurant
"Great food, comfortable drink" is the mission, but at Alice’s, it's about much more than that. With a broad deck that overlooks the main stretch of Lake Hopatcong, fresh produce from nearby Halsey Island, and a naturally simple (but rustic) decor, Alice's is a place that celebrates lake living and good company.

Lake Hopatcong resident Alice Szigethy opened Alice's in June 2009 to expand the selection of lake destinations. In this reinvention of a building that had been a series of eateries over several decades, the space features vaulted ceilings, reclaimed-barn-wood walls, comfy booths, and a full bar that extends from the airy interior to the breezy deck. A mahogany seating bar runs the length of the deck so guests can sit and enjoy a clear panorama of the water, and an austere metal awning gives outdoor diners a shady place to enjoy the view, the breeze-and, of course, the food.

Food is great, the view is nice when you sit on the deck, but the service is a bit slow. They've been having trouble with their fire alarm system lately, as the last two times we've been, the building had to be evacuated in the middle of our meal. The alarm is piercing to the point of pain. Once is an event, something that gives you stories to tell. But twice in a row is a serious problem. They need to get this fixed.

We were extremely happy with the outdoor seating for our party of 6 and the service was better than most. The wait staff was helpful and friendly. The food was outstading. The meatloaf is to die for and the organic chicken will be my next meal. Overall, can't wait to return by boat next time.

Service was okay. Food left much to desire. We ordered appetizers that was fit for one person each and pretty much tasteless other than the wings which I assume was only complimented by the spice in which it was marinated. Calamari and Crab cakes were bland. As for the main entrees, they were slightly better. We tried different entrees from all over the menu but all came short of expectation. We were celebrating a graduation of a family member so the poor service and food became nonexistent as we all celebrated as a family however if it were for dinner for party it would have been really disappointing.

  • Alice's has a lot of potential.

Alice's has a lot of potential. One big problem is the servers are not very well trained. I sat with an empty wine glass for about twenty minutes... Finally someone asked how the meal was, by that time we were done and I wasn't going to order another glass-- but I wasn't asked anyway. I am sure that I could have gotten another glass sooner if I was assertive-- not my style. And I was the driver anyway. Food was good although I felt some of the dishes could have used more seasoning...

Only two stars, they sat us in the basement where the server was overwhelmed by the 4 tables he had. With a reservation I didn't expect to be sat in the walk-in room. Very disappointed but I know if we had been sat upstairs the experience could have been much better. Will we go back, I don't know but if we do I will say no way to the basement!

Alice's is probably the best restaurant food-wise in the Lake Hopatcong area. They have a large deck with an awning that allows for magnificent views in the warmer months. The interior is also beautiful, with wood ceilings, candles, and intimate dining. It can get a bit loud, but the great food and amazing views make it worth it. They also have a fantastic drink menu. Beer, wine, and fun cocktails! If you can schedule your visit around the sunset, you are sure to get a treat. Just BEAUTIFUL.

I love the casual atmosphere and open design of the place, with great lake views. I've been here several times with friends, and plan on returning. Good classics like, the ribs, Alices Meatloaf and Chicken Pot Pie. The Horseradish encrusted Salmon dish with the delicious vegetables recieved rave reviews from 3 friends. A friend who ordered the steak, cleaned her plate, reamarking that she's never eaten a vegetable side before! The Cucumber Soup and Coconut Rice Pudding were sublime. Drink specials add to the fun!

We were there three months ago and loved the restaurant, location, view, food and everything, so we went again. First, it was a special event and we requested a window table or table by the window but were told that we can't request those, even on a reservation. Then we stat down and it was so loud I couldn't even talk to my wife or guests without yelling at them. So, I can get over all of this if the food is good. But this is where things went down hill. The menu was very limiting and then when we got the food, no one in my party liked what they ordered. The pork spare ribs had a weird taste, one guests chicken pot pie wasn't good and the fish and chips were also bad. Finally, to top it off they don't take American Expres

This was our second visit and while it was not quite up to the first visit it was no the food that was at fault. Our main courses, breast of chicken and grilled shrimp were outstanding. My chopped salad was excellent but my wife's salad did not come with the apples and walnuts as noted on the menu.. Our waitress made it right. Our service was very good and it was fun to see our server open her first bottle of wine. The only problem was it was a very hot evening and air conditioning was at a premium. It was a bit uncomfortable.

My significant other and myself have now been here around ten times. Last night was our first "summer-time" visit. The first snag with our Alice's experience this evening was parking. We had a set reservation at 7:00 however due to lack of parking up in your main lot, the parking down below by Windlass and in that new lot that had construction vehicles in it, we had to circle for at least 10-15 minutes until we came across and available parking spot. We told the host the situation and she apparently marked our reservation as a cancellation, which was wrong. Upon entering the restaurant it was HOT. Hotter then outside. There was no AC in the restaurant and almost every waiter/waitress were sweating and complaining just as much as the guests.

Was there on three prior occassions with very different experience. Food was good, service good. This time what a surprise. We sat downstairs- floor was tile so chairs kept slipping, the noise was difficult to tolerate. Our reservation was at 8:45 but we were seated at 8:30. Our waiter was enthusiastic and helpful....but it took 45 minutes to get us our entre...a hamburger and a shrimp salad! The waiter kept apologizing that everyone was waiting a long time and thanked me for my patience...I was about to walk out at 9:25 but at 9:30 the food came. By the way the burger was overcooked. The management never did anything to acknowledge the wait....the waiter was terrific...the kitchen and management need to be managed.

Very disappointing trip to Alice's. I have been there in the past and it was great but tonight it seemed as if they could have cared less about customers. When I arrived the hostess barely acknowledged our party and just walked us to the furthest table possible from the outside. I then said I had requested outside when made the reservation and her response was "well we don't have any tonight" and then just walked away. She didn't even ask if we would like to wait for one. Now I understand you can't gaurantee a request and I am sure everyone wants outside here but you should at least acknowledge the request. We were seated right near the kitchen and it was extremely hot so we got up and left. The hostess just said. "ok".

It's hard to find, but once you do, it's well worth the trip. The absence of attitude given the quality of the food was refreshing. The staff places a wine bottle of still water and a blue colored wine bottle of sparking water on the table. How nice not to be offered bottled waters at a price. The wine menu offers a good selection of reasonably priced wines. The menu is in keeping with the casual ambiance, but there is nothing casual about the preparations. The fried calamari was perfectly done and tender, not tough as is often the case. The pulled pork sandwich had the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. The hand cut steak fries were a touch underdone, but crisp on the outside. I can't wait to go back and try other things.

We went on a Friday night and although the restaurant was packed, the service was excellent, Our server,Jill, properly paced the meal, being attentive but not obtrusive. I had roast chicken with spring vegetables. The vegetables played off nicely against the sweet moist chicken. My guest had a pulled pork sandwich which was piled high with pork and slaw. She said it was as good as she has ever eaten. Great place. Parking is a little tight but be patient . Its worth it.

We were one of the early diners on Mother's Day and were seated immediately. Our drink orders were taken right away, however, it took almost half an hour before our waitress even came back to take our food orders. She was busy waiting on a large table next to us, and maybe she also waited on the other 4 tables that were occupied. Meanwhile there were 3 people standing behind the counter wiping glasses. When she finally returned she apologized and said that the kitchen was backed up. Hard to believe as the place was not even half full. Food was OK and service was fine after the long wait. I hoped to end the meal on a pleasant note until she came back and said my order of pineapple upside down cake was not available that day.

We had a 12noon Mother's Day reservations and arrived early at 11:50. They sat us down immediately and we waited 8 minutes before the waitress came over to take our drink order. It was another 20 minutes after that before she came back to take our food order. She apologized for the wait and explained that the kitchen was slow and brought us a round of drinks on the house. That was nice of her but I did not understand why the kitchen was slow as the restaurant was half empty at the time. Our food came out 30 minutes later. A total of 1 hour before we received out food. We overheard another table complain and asked for their check immediately as they had been waiting for their food for 1 1/2 hours. Food is good when it finally came.

We tried Alice's out about 3 weeks ago for our first time. I think we got spoiled on our first experience because everything feel into place perfectly that night. We were sat downstairs where it was quiet, the room was a perfect temperature, the bartender was social and friendly (billy) and we also sat next to the owners of the restaurant that also envoked some friendly conversation. The last two times we have made reservations the basement was not available, and the upstairs bar nearly didn't the justice as below deck. The 2nd visit we had to sit outside on the patio/bar which with the warmers was still brisk, too cold for my lady, and the 3rd visit we sat on the regular bar side which was better with the vibe of the restaurant.
