A word from AltaMare

Altamare - a hidden “locals only” secret in Sobe - is a fusion between owner Claudio Giordano’s two passions: Italian cuisine and fishing. These aspects come together in a menu that showcases the best catches from local fishing boats intermingled with classic Italian dishes.

Our décor reflects South Beach style however, the food is anything but pretentious. The likes of wahoo crudo; fresh oysters; short rib lasagnette; and beautifully presented fresh fish are just a few items that keep locals coming back.

We are located on the Western end of Lincoln road mall, just off the beaten path. Stray from the overly-commercial glamorized retail stores and tourist trap eateries, with a short hop across Alton Road to discover this local favorite.

  • I loved the older, more cramped

I loved the older, more cramped mostly undiscovered dining room so it is with mixed emotions that I report that the new Alta Mare has moved to a more lovely, more trendy, more comfortably inviting space just a block away --, a move that is sure to draw attention to this long-hidden gem of the neighborhood just west of the Lincoln Road promenade. The hitch, of course, is that you gotta pay for the new digs somehow. So it's more expensive than the place that offered delightful pris fix 5-7pm specials and a glass of house wine. I've only been once but based on this one dinner it may prove to be the best, most inventive, fish place along the Lincoln Road corridor -- with what looks like some fine meat and poultry offerings for those disinclined

Its a noisy place, the kind that hipsters frequent. our party of 4 foodies was somewhat disappointed having gone there after reading Victoria Pesce Elliot's three and a half star review in the Miami Herald. It definitely did not live up to the review. If you are going to do a mainly fish menu you need to do it brilliantly for people to come back. The flavors were unexciting and uninspiring. Having said that the food was competent enough although the service spotty which is par for the course at the beach. They seemed to be in a hurry to get us out the door. We reached there at a little after nine and were done by ten. Within a few second of our appetizer plates being cleared our entrees were unceremoniously dumped at our table.

While this new version of a classic local place has gone a bit upscale there is a loss of the "naturalness" of the home style fish preprations.

Service disappointing and food average value for pices charged. Merely a neighborhood hangout, but hardly worth the effort of a special trip. Miami and South Beach has so much more to offer!!

Maybe my expectations were too high? Maybe I got there too early? Whatever the reason, I was not blown away by the food or service. When we arrived, all the waiters were standing around outside talking and preparing for the night. After we ordered, it was difficult to get our waiters attention because he was involved chatting with the other waiters....so I sat without water, without a fork, and started to get a little frustrated. The appetizers were ok....SoBe trendy little portions that made me start thinking where I was going to go eat when dinner was over!

We had a 7:30 PM reservation and upon arrival it was busy. It was a pleasure when we were welcomed and seated immediately. Between the professional service that started with a confirmation call 5 hours before we arrived, the prompt seating, and the attentive staff during the meal - first impressions were met. I had already been to Alta Mar once before in the new location, and was bringing friends. Without making the effort to impress them - I did. My guests were 2 NYC Foodies who travel frequently to Miami. They shared with me over dinner their skepticism for dining on Lincoln Road because the selection of good eateries is limited. But Alta Mar provided fresh appetizers and dishes of king fish, and tuna that were inspired.

This was my second visit to the reinvented AltaMare. Dinner, drinks and wine were wonderful. Location is great, one block west of the Lincoln Road pedestrian mall and the Regal movie theater, and so much better than the tourist traps on Lincoln Road. The welcome, the service were quite good. Dinner was superb, but somewhat pricey for a relatively informal restaurant. This would be a problem only if the quality of the dinner did not match the price (see comment above in regards to the Lincoln Road competitors).

The food is conistantly good. The fish and seafood are very fresh and the side dishes and desserts are also wonderful. If I had to make any changes, I would have a better wine list, offer more wines by the glass and offer a few half bottles. The bread is the only food item that is mediocre. This is a restaurant that we will visit on every trip we make to Miami, and we come to Miami a lot.

Claudio continues to grow. New location with significant build out creates a dining room, bar, and separate function room. As always, outstanding food. Try the "shortribs" as this is quickly becoming their standard. Nothing else like it as it comes from a special unique cut from a special provider.

The food was nothing special and rather expensive. I preferred the old menu that Alta Mar used to serve. The whole menu was changed and is rather tasteless. The best part of the meal was the deconstructive tiramisu. This use to be a neighborhood gem, no longer the case.

  • Altamare is a neighborhood
    OpenTable Diner Since 2005
    Dined on 3/12/2010
Altamare is a neighborhood gem on the west side of Lincoln Road. The decor, with its chocolate brown woods, beige walls and warm light is very inviting. I hear some of the prints on the wall are from the designer's personal collection and just stunning. They have a new chef who is working closely with local farmers and fisherman offering very fresh options. Fish, meats and pasta are fantastic and service is just right. While I highly recommend this new restaurant, I also hope it stays a neighborhood secret. I also heard they are now open for lunch Tuesday - Saturday - a great option to Lincoln Road. Parking is also very easy with valet at night and ample metered parking in back.

We were scammed. I chose this restaurant to entertain business associates while in South Beach. It was highly recomended by a friend who lives locally. After dinner the waiter returned my amex and said it was not good - had been rejected. (odd because it had just worked at the bar) I paid with a MC. I called amex the next morning and the restaurant had put 2 other dinners on my card - so i paid for 3 dinners! I called the "manager" who told me she had realized the error, put a credit through and the machine would not except my card again. I asked her why she didn't come to the table apologize and explain, and she was unable to answer. The next morning Amex had no credits only charges that were not mine! Pathetic.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2007

While the food was fresh & tasty, the service & management were quite lacking. It took us 25 minutes to order & receive our drinks and our waiter would only come to our table if the hostess called him over. Our appetizer (tuna tatare) & main courses (cobia & mackerel) were good; however, when it came to dessert, we were persuaded into trying the "deconstructed tiramesu" with the promse of returning it if we didn't enjoy it. When this proved true, the waiter was relctant to bring it back & we were pressured to order something else. The worst part, though, was when we were discussing our transportation options back to the beach so we could head out & the owner came over to ask us to leave because he needed the table. Will not return.
