Seated fairly quickly since half the restaurant was empty on a Thursday evening. However, the two of us were left unattended for about 15 minutes until we walked to the bar and asked for service. They apologized for the miscommunication between the staff, and our service after that was good.

Service was really slow vis a vis other visits. Dining room was not that full and meal took 3 hours. We emerged to find that the "anti foe gras" protesters out front with some fairly graphic posters and videos. This did not go over well since we were dining with out children.

This restaurant knows how to treat foodies...it is elegant, and the staff is very well trained; however, at the end we all agree it is all about the food. this restaurant's menu was simple yet interesting, understated yet flavorful and grand. It was our aniversary and they bought us complementary champaigne glasses...a very nice touch. We would become regulars if we lived there.

The food was excellent as was the service. We did NOT appreciate the singer since we were hoping for a nice, quiet, intimate dinner. Someone joined the singer for a few songs. He could not sing to save himself. It was painful to listen. He seemed to think it was quite funny - we were not amused. He needs to keep his day job!

Decent food, but for the (high) price you're basically paying a premium for ambiance. A lot of the dishes were good at first taste, but ultimately too sweet by mid-way through. Likewise, the meats were good, but some of the sides/garnishes that came with them were not. Laurel has a number of pre-theatre, happy hour, and tasting menu options that would be worth trying out, and the bar looks like it could be a good place to stop in at. The cocktails that we had were creative and done well, and the wine list was of a good size.

The service was adequate through most of the meal, but dropped off noticably towards the end. That was my first time there – I will have to go back before making a final judgement.

Our first visit to Laurel and it will definitely not be our last. Both of us had the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings, both of which were excellent. Our waiter Raymond was excellent as well, and imparted his thorough knowledge of the wines and menu in a measured match to the outstanding courses. Overall an elegant dining experience and exactly what we were looking for for our 18th anniversary.

Two entrees, a pork shank and a duck confit, were overcooked and dry. As many times as my wife and I have eaten at Laurel, the first time within 10 days of the restaurant original opening, this was easily the most disappointing. Unfortunately we were with out-of-towners. Perhaps this explains why on a Friday night the restaurant wasn't more crowded.

Hello - We had an exceptional dinner at Laurel and really enjoyed the meal and the service. Only comment is that when we made the reservation through Open Table, we were celebrating my husband's birthday and noted this in our reservation. In my OpenTable reservation, I requested "A quiet location, please, as this is a business meeting" but when they seated us, the hostess walked us right up to a table near to the entry and to the jazz ensemble that was playing that night. It was clear she hadn't read the OpenTable reservation. My guest asked for us to be seated away from the noise and she then walked us right to the back of the house, (a) where we should have been seated originally and (b) where there should have been a 'Reserved' sign awaiting us as OpenTable members. At that time, the restaurant had many open tables in different locations.

This restaurant is nothing short of fantastic. It makes for great pictures too. I have been here a million times and it is by far my favorite restaurant. Ben the manager is fantatstic. Their customer is service is incomparable. The restaurant atmosphere is gorgeous and the food is unbelievable. It is the best restaurant in San Diego. It is chic and sophisticated but tactfully sexy and edgy. It is great for so many occasions. My husband and I go there for date nights and I also hosted my parents 25th wedding anniversary party there. I bring all my girl friends here too and they are amazed at what a gem this restaurant truly is! Hannah King, San Diego, CA

The change in chef seems a change not for the better. The edamame were flavorful, but greasy. One appetizer and main course were overpoweringly and unnecessarily rich. Sadly, the vegetarian combination entree that has been a staple at the restaurant is now gone. The dessert was pedestrian. All in all, it was a disappointment -- especially when compared to the high expectations diners had reason to hold based on past dining experiences.

The restaurant was amazing. The flowers I ordered for the two ladies I was dining with were on the table when we arrived. I had indicated that we had theater tickets and the server ensured that our courses were delivered appropriately. The General Manager came to our table and introduced himself. We decided that we would have dessert when we returned from the theater. When we returned the GM had a plate of desserts ready for us and as we walked in the door he poured us a complimentary glass of wine. It was and outstanding evening for all of us.

They were especially helpful and friendly when we requested being shifted to another table where it would be easier to talk (just 2 of us). The initial table we were placed at was a bit noisy as they had us placed tightly between 2 loud parties. I think it would have been a good spot to put a party of four, but just the two of us felt crowded and overwhelmed. The degree to which they accomodated us and still made us feel welcome was refreshing.

We were very disappointed that there was no valet service and was not informed that there is none on Tuesdays which made parking a problem. When we entered the restaurant the hostess, in a very blase manner, indicated that a valet may or may not show up. We were also disappointed in our server. Although there were very few patrons at the early hour we were there (pre-theater) we waited for some time to even be asked if we were interested in a drink and then had to track down our waiter to ask for coffee. And lastly, while we were assured there would be shuttle service to the theater, we decided during dinner to take our own cars as we feared that we wouldn't be picked up in light of the blase attitude of the entire service staff.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 3/20/2008
More upscale sister restaurant of Kensington Grill and Chive has some nice offerings. However the overall tastiness of the food does actually not quite measure up to expectations at about $200 for two with wine (and the wine list is heavy in the higher price range). Indeed, Kensington Grill surpasses it with more dishes that simply "click," with well thought-out balance and freshness, though they do not have the rare ingredients such as foie gras, that Laurel specializes in. As an example, the pork belly appetizer, that I had, was as tender as you could wish for, but lacking enough acidity in the accompaniments to cut the rich saltiness of the dish. Overall a nice evening, just not quite as creative and daring as I'd hoped.
