A word from Big Bowl-Reston
There’s really only one place for authentic Chinese and Thai, and that's Big Bowl. It all begins with the highest quality ingredients–naturally raised chicken and beef, heirloom pork, sustainable seafood and produce grown locally. Because Big Bowl believes that the best food is made from scratch, you can taste big, bold layers of flavors in every dish, from the curries right down to the dipping sauces.

Everyone raves about the pad Thai, our spicy dishes that are truly hot, and our create-your-own stir-fry–and for good reason. Every element adds up to big taste and takes our food to another level, be it a fresh squeeze of lime, fragrant herbs or the seared Thai chilies.

Big Bowl is so big on authentic flavors that even the ginger ale is made with fresh ginger root–from scratch, of course.

I have been a long time supporters of Big Bowl but my recent visit was disappointing. Perhaps it was due in part to our servers inattention. She was friendly but confused. I felt forgotten. On the food, one guest ordered the Kung Pao Chicken. Might have better been called Kung Pao peanuts...lots of peanuts but a severely limited amount of chicken. Seems like there has been decrease in the amount of main ingredients in their dishes. Food has lost its "sparkle." After supporting this restaurant for many years, we have decided it is time to "move on."

We first visited Big Bowl years ago. What keeps us coming back is the vegetable bar. They have it set up so that you can order your meal by picking the type of meat (or go vegetarian), the type of sauce (8 +- choices) and rice or noodles. Then they give you a big bowl (hence the name) and you go to a vegetable bar where you can fill your bowl with whatever veggies you want. They have at least two dozen choices from onions, a couple of different types of mushrooms, green and red peppers, bamboo, shallots, hot peppers, carrots, pineapple, etc. etc. etc. It's all very fresh. Then you give it to the kitchen, and they cook it up. It's awesome. You can also order from the menu, and they have a lot of standard Chinese and Thai dishes

Service was exceptional. My boyfriend and I visited at lunchtime on a Tuesday afternoon. As first time diners we were offered a free 2 piece appetizer, unfortunately I do not recall what it was - though very good. We ordered the Spicy Sichuan Green Beans for a full appetizer which was very flavorful. It had a little kick to it but not hot. I would recommend them. This was followed by their Pho. This was my first time having Pho so I do not have anything to compare it to, but it was hot and delicious. Just what I needed when temps were 9 degrees outside! For my main meal I had the Thai Hot Pepper Chicken with Basil and Peanuts. This was definitely a hot dish, loved all the cilantro, great blend of flavors! Highly recommend this dish.

We went to BIg Bowl on New Years Eve--reservations were a must that night, as the place was packed. The menu had changed a bit since we were there a while ago--we took advantage of the Family Style meal for groups of 4 or more. We had PLENTY of food for everyone, my daughter is a vegetarian and there were great choice there that we all enjoyed. Place is pretty noisy, but we lucked out and got a table by the bar where we could at least hear each other.

This is an ok Asian restaurant which tries to do both Chinese and Thai dishes. None of them are truly "authentic" and the emphasis is on chicken with some beef and shrimp. For example, Chinese dumplings are almost ALWAYS pork and there is no pork on the menu at all. So if you just want basic Asian this place will do.

We went here after an afternoon movie, it was only a short walk around the block. They had a very good menu with plenty of choices. There Thai beef lettuce wraps were very delicious with a great mix of flavors. My wife had the Pad Thai and enjoyed that, and I had the Panang Curry Chicken with Jasmine rice which was very good. I would recommend this place to anyone in the area.

My family and I were looking forward to dining at the Big-Bowl Restaurant because of the variety of Chinese and Thai options available. Sadly, we were underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, it just wasn't very good either. The best thing that we had were the green beans from the appetizer menu. The rest of the meal was drenched in sauces and not very flavorful. With all of the dining options in Reston Town Center, we would opt out of a return visit to the Big-Bowl.

Big Bowl is changing a little over time. We find that their healthy side is getting a hit as their menu changes. Some of the more healthy choices are a little less so. I got lettuce wraps, usually one of the most health, but the oil a grease in the filling was dominate. After showing the waitress they attempted to do it over, and it came back slightly better, but still not as good as other local restaurants. The select your own stir fry is as good as ever. I like the selection of fresh ingredients and the sauce and base choices.

Enjoyed eating at Big Bowl in Reston, especially the stir-fry bar where you could choose your own veggies, meat, sauce and rice - I always enjoyed the flavor profile. Chicken lettuce cups were terrific, and I liked the peanut satay sauce. I also like how accommodating the restaurant is to kids, especially given the more hip ambiance. Service, unfortunately, was a little slow (we only saw our server once after our food came in, so beverages and water glasses left unfilled). But there was minimal wait with the reservation (thank you, Open Table) so in general, it was a positive experience.

The food selection and presentation was good. I was looking for drunken noodles which seems to be a staple a Thai restaurants but they do not have this dish. The service was just fair but would attribute more to the individual server as opposed to a norm for the resturant. It was great for a business lunch because the food came out quickly. Overall I would recommend and go again.

Big Bowl is many things rolled into one. You can count on the food always being good. There is a definite Asian slant to the menu, part Chinese, part Thai with seafood included. You can design your own dish with the 'Big Bowl' choice. The food is fresh and presentation well thought out. Seasonal dishes are always a part of the menu, and the restaurant sources from local farms when possible. Sustainability is a part of the overall company plan. The beer list is diverse and changes. The servers are upbeat and attentive. The atmosphere is welcoming and calm, yet lively. This is a place where you can return time after time and always be glad you did!

Our party of five reserved table was ready for us (ice waters poured) in spite of a full house with a crowd at the door. Stir-fry bar is great, allowing you to customize your meal to your specifications. Many choices for my vegetarian daughter. Only small complaint was concerning the sangria. We ordered the seasonal, which was apple cider based. For the next pitcher we decided to try the pomegranite. It looked and tasted exactly the same. When we mentioned that we thought we were brought the seasonal again in error, the manager said no it was the pomegranite, and he would add a pump of pomegranite to it if we wanted a pink color (??) It tasted fine, just not different from the apple. The birthday dessert for my daughter was a nice touch.

The service at Big Bowl is always good. I arrived early for our reservation and was seated right away while I waited for my friends. Our server was friendly and attentive. The chef brought over a complimentary appetizer of 2 wontons, which was very much appreciated. The noise level was louder than I would have liked. We found it difficult to have a conversation. I guess that's to be expected during the lunch rush. The only down side was that I also placed a take out order for Thai Hot Pepper Chicken without peanuts. When the person I ordered it for opened it, it did in fact have peanuts. Next time I will check the take out order before I leave. Otherwise all was good and we will definitely be back. Highly recommend the shrimp summer rolls!

We weren't fans when Big Bowl first opened 20 years ago but we can't stop going there now. I brought my tween daughter who loves a Mongolian Barbeque fast casual concept restaurant in our neighborhood for the first time to Big Bowl tonight. She had heard me rave about it but wasn't sure what to expect. After picking out her veggies for the big bowl, with sliced steak, that she ordered, her anticipation rose. When her bowl arrived, she commented, "This is what a high-end Mongolian barbeque restaurant is!" And it's more than just a Mongolian barbeque place. We love the new lunch menu - great dishes with proper proportions. Big Bowl has become our favorite place in the Reston Town Center.

Big Bowl is great. I always go for the make-your-own stir fry bar where you choose a protein source (e.g. chicken), a sauce (e.g. yellow curry), and a rice (e.g. white rice), then pick your own veggies buffet style and have a cook stir fry it all up. I'm always happy with the result. Go hungry because the portions are generous.

There are very few places that offer lot of options for vegetarians. This is one of the reasons we find ourselves back at Big Bowl often. The ability to select your own veggies from a large variety of options, add Tofu as your protein and have a variety of vegetarian sauces available makes for a pleasant dining experience. We love their fresh gingerale too. The service was particularly good this go-around - the restaurant was very busy with a long wait, but we had reservations and were seated very soon after we showed up. Despite the fact they were busy, we were well attended to and the food came out quickly and was good quality. We'll be going back again before too long.

Reston has several good restaurants, but Big Bowl is a true gem. The food is consistently good; the service is invariably pleasant; the ambience is always congenial. This time the Panang was a trifle lackluster; but of the other two entrees I ordered, one was good and the other excellent. I like the energetic, young waiters in Big Bowl, many of whom I recognize. This time a new person served us, with grace, promptness and extraordinary charm. All in all, a fine experience that pleased me and -- more important -- my special guest.
