A word from Ristorante La Buca
The name translates as 'the cave' with rooms decidedly 'dark,. La Buca offers excellent, fresh fare (especially the outstanding grilled fish & other traditional Italian seafood!) & experienced old-world service. La Buca is located below street level on Washington Square.

Always a great place to dine as well as a great meal. Have been going there for over twenty-five years and have never had a bad meal or a bad experience. One of the best places to dine in the city. Have and will continue to recommend as one of the best.

This was our first time to La Buca, what a wonderful, pleasant surprise. The service was wonderful, the atmosphere is just great and the food was wonderful, it was one of the best restaurants we have been to. We were totally amazed at the prices, we could not believe how reasonable it was. We definitely plan on going back.

We ate at La Buca before a show at the Walnut. Our meals were delicious and the server was excellent....so attentive and friendly. An added plus was the discount because we had theater tickets and free parking.

Great restaurant! Authentic Northern Italian cuisine, great selection of fresh seafood, high quality wines, reasonable prices. The waiters are connoisseurs of good food and know how to please you. La Buca is slow and old-fashioned but that's what gives it special charm. There were mostly older people when I went there, probably because it is less known among younger people and college students. The restaurant doesn't advertise as far as I know, and is well known among older people or Italians who keep coming back due to exceptional service, food, and environment.

My significant other and I dined at the restaurant to celebrate my birthday. The food was fantastic!! My mussels were delicious. My dinner of stuffed calamari and his dinner of red snapper were cooked to perfection. Our waiter was very helpful. We loved it and will definitely be back. Also, the bartender was also very courteous and entertaining.

This hidden secret surpassed our expectations! The simply grilled whole Branzino was perfect as were the simply grilled Langostines, and the taste/service/ambiance was that of authentic Italian dining. Authentic is the key here, and as former residents of Italy (6 years), we should know!

La Buca is old-school. It should be on the endangered species list because it is not in a trendy location (not Rittenhouse, not 13th St, not Passyunk), nor does it try for a "fusion" menu or theme-park atmosphere. It is simply, wonderfully, deliciously authentic. La buca means "the cave," and the restaurant is in a beautiful cellar, adorned with murals of traditional Roman scenery. The menu is loaded with the freshest of fish, which great tuxedoed waiters show off on a cart. The Dover sole, filleted tableside is great. The pasta is homemade, and if you sit at the bar and chat with the regulars, ask for a half order which is plenty. Perhaps 20 varieties of pasta/sauces for $6! And Boris makes a mean martini.

The food was well-prepared and reasonably priced. Specials were in the $30 range. Friends said the Caesar salad was wonderful and raved about the dressing. The chicken dishes were very tasty. Portions were nice sized, but vegetables were a bit sparse.

Anthony salad (with roasted red peppers) was very tasty. Pasta dinner entree (Penne Bolognese) was served hot with a delicious meat sauce. While the basket of bread was just OK, at least a nice bottle of olive oil was provided for dipping. The restaurant is below street level and has no windows, but is adorned with a floor to ceiling mural and various framed pictures.

We have enjoyed La Buca for years! It is one of the premier Philadelphia restaurants. Everything about this wonderful eating establishment is the best. The personal service is without compare. The food is among the finest on the East Coast! The ambience is not the most updated, but is comfortable and pleasant, especially for a quiet meal with family and/or friends. We try to go at least half a dozen times a year and would go more often if we lived in the city. We especially savor the veal dishes (and lamb chops), but the seafood is excellent as well.

This restaurant needs to come into the 21st century. They are trying to rest on old laurels perhaps. There are just too many other good Italians restaurants in Philly to waste your time and money here.

Pre-theatre it is among the best available. One of the few spots in town that consistantly has great food, and great seafoord as well as Italian, prompt but not rushed service, and is NOT noisy. You can actually have nice conversation around a table for 6, even if you are a senior citizen, without yelling or twisting your neck. Old world waiters anticipates your needs.

Excellent food and service. Pretty frescoes on the walls, servers in tuxes. Friendly greeting. Ceiling tiles make it look older, and it's not posh or trendy, but it was a great experience if not as visually striking as some Philly restaurants. My husband requested a card for future reference in booking business dinners, which tells you that the dining experience was a very good one on all counts.
