One characteristic of a really good restaurant is that the food remains of high quality when the top chef is away. Last night, Matt Smith was away but the foie gras torchon and the scallops we had were excellent. So not only has the cooking ratcheted up a notch recently but the support staff is up to the task. Always one of our favorite restaurants in San Diego, they are likely to see us even more frequently.

New Years Eve prix fixe: the wine (by the glass) was excellent; the lobster salad was also excellent; the entree choices were unusual and below the usual Winesellar standard; the dessert, a trio, was small and somewhat disappointing - the salted chocolate truffle was so salty that it was not enjoyable. The service was excellent.

We were TOTALLY mislead by their advertising of "SPECIAL CHAMPAGNE PRICING". They were not willing to admit that they had send us a very misleading email. Not good business tactics. Will not go back!

The duck leg confit and breast was simply outstanding -- worthy of a Michelin rated restaurant in France. We dine at the Winesellar reasonably often and this was one of the best meals we've had there although they had two private parties and it took a while to get our main course. However, it was worth waiting for. Service was ok although it's generally very good but the demands of the private groups did have an adverse impact. Once again, the Chef change has been positive -- the food was always good but some additional variety was needed and things have ratcheted up.

We had the sublime experience of doing the Chef's five-course tasting menu. Our server and sommelier interviewed us about our food preferences and limitations, and then shared them with the chef. The chef then created a custom menu just for us. Each course was delectable with wine paired by the sommelier. Our table favorite: Butter poached lobster with Israeli couscous in a creamy, cheesy browned butter sauce..incredible. While not inexpensive, ($65 per person for food and another $35 for the wine pairing) as an experience it was fantastic. Also fun was checking out the wines downstairs!

We enjoyed a delightful champagne tasting and luncheon for my husband's birthday--excellent service, a truly delicious cheese plate and selection of luncheon specialties, and a romantic corner in which to enjoy it. Will definitely return!

We hadn't been there for several years because of the "sameness" of the old menu. The new chef is excellent, as was our meal. We will be back.

It has been very good for years and the recent change in chef and restaurant manager have not detracted at all from this being one of San Diego's best restaurants. They have improved the prix fixe offerings, continued to offer wine at very fair prices, and the new chef is beginning to have an influence on the variety of the offerings which is a good change.

I just love this place. It is by far my FAVORITE Restaurant in San Diego. It always has a changing menu, themed to seasonal specialties. The food is "out of this world". The service is the best in SD. The Wine list is bar none, no better than here. I will say that I did have a some wine that they recommended with my meal & the host nailed it!!!! I would like to say that this establishment is a San Diego Gem. The Wine Brassier should be, and is the "Top Place" to come when you want the perfect meal experience. They hold the bar for all other restaurants to try to achieve. The Service, Food & Wine are not to be judged by their location. I like to think of it as the Perfect sleeper Restaurant. It hits a Homer every time!

  • The recent change in chefs
    BFBSDVIP
    Dined on 11/11/2009
The recent change in chefs has actually made an excellent restaurant even better as he has freshened the menu. It took a while to get our main course but when it arrived, it was perfectly cooked. They've also lowered the prices of certain main courses and the wine pricing remains probably the most fair in all of Southern California. It's basically the retail price in the wine store downstairs plus 30% and the selection is fabulous. While some people may prefer more glamorous locations and those with a view, for me, the WineSellar's offbeat location in an industrial park with easy parking actually adds to its charm. There is a $40 prix-fixe option which is a great value with several choices for both the starter and the main course.
