  • Mediocre Dinner, Great Happy Hour
    OpenTable Diner Since 2013
    Dined on 2/19/2013
My husband, my mother in law and I went here for hubby's 40th birthday. We had a few drinks at the bar and a few of the happy hour appetizers. The steak bites, calamari, and the tempura jalapenos were excellent. Then we decided to have some dinner. The mother in law and I decided to split the shrimp and hubby had the tuna. The shrimp came out on one plate, and the server handed us two more plates like we were supposed to split the meal ourselves. Um... even at Chilis they split the plate for you. Hubby's tuna was a great cut, however, there was almost no seasoning on the fish, and the accompanying veggies were cold. For a $100 tab (with a free birthday entree) I expected A LOT more from Shula's.

  • Experience was underwhelming

Experience was underwhelming and will keep us from coming back. It was a 'hotel restaurant', despite being part of the 'Shula' line. They put us right next to the door that goes outside to outdoor tables. I immediately told the greeter that we didn't want to sit there as we both can't stand the smoke from outdoor smokers coming in everytime the door opens and we both had short sleeves (our fault). There were many open tables already and they said we assign each table. I was like, 'really?, you can't move us to another open table?' That was not a good start. Then the waitress took at least 5 min to get to our table for the first visit. Service was very bad all night and drinks were poor. Food, so-so.

I expected more of a fine dining restaurant ambiance, but got Sports Bar instead. We went on Valentine's Day and had reservations for 8 PM and it was only half-full. With that said, service was poor. We waited for 20 minutes before someone took our order! However, the food was tasty. We brought the service issue to the manager's attention. He never checked back with us to see how the evening was going.

My wife and I are local to Lake Mary and we often join Shula's 347 for breakfast and lunch. We made reservations for Valentine's Day dinner and were not disappointed. Jackie, whom we really like, ws niot working that night. Although Brittney was not familiar to us, she was very professional, positive and kept us informed of our food status and was a great attendant. Compliments to the chef who always puts together some of the healthiest, tastiest and most delicious meals available anywhere. Fresh seafood daily, freindly service and organic foods are the reason we eat here so often.

The good: Our food was prepared well and according to our requests. Our server was better than good-she made good suggestions and was very responsive. The OK: The interior was nice, clean but a bit cold-feeling. Points off for the high seat-back cushions. I wanted to take in the restaurant a bit sitting there and it was impossible to get a feel for the place. The bad: The Shula's steak sauce wasn't great. My wife went slumming and asked for A1 instead.

The Filet was excellent and at the correct temperature. If I were to order the Cowboy again, I would go one temperature less done, as the cut was a little thinner than I expected, consequently a little more done. The noise level was a little high, but not uncomfortable. The atmosphere is a little livelier than out at the Dolphin or down in Ft. Lauderdale. Overall, a very good experience.

The food was very good. However, we arrived early for our reservation and were treated very rudely. We were directed to sit outside where servers repeatedly passed by us without offering to get us a drink, etc. We watched for seats at the bar to open up and eventually they did. There were several empty tables so not sure why it was an issue that we were early for our reservation.

Food and service were great. The only drawback was how freezing cold it was. We actually skipped dessert because it was so cold. The waiters/waitresses were walking around rubbing their arms, both my parents were cold enough we had to go to the car to get sweaters. I keep my house at about 70-71, but the temp in the restaurant was cooler than that. I would guess about 67-68 degrees. I did mention it to the staff when asked how lunch was and they mentioned that the thermostate was controlled by the hotel. I would go back, but this is something that needs to be addressed.

They assign tables so you can't change seats (we wanted a booth). We ordered spinach artichoke dip, pistachio crusted lamb, sea salt & pepper prime rib, and surf & turf. The dip was good but entrées were a big disappointment. Everything came out way under. We asked for medium wells and we got medium rares. Waiter, who asked us to check, didn't even take the food. He said sorry and went to get the manager. We sat there for 7-10 mins with food we couldn't eat. Mgr came, took the food and we waited for another 15-20 min for a still undercooked food so we just kept it. Both lamb and prime rib was 50% fat... $40 a plate and you get 50% fat? Not worth it. Service was bad, food got cold by the time the waiter remember our condiments. We waited.

This has been one of my wife's and I favorite places to dine for some time now however something was off that evening. Maybe because it was a Sunday night or a couple of days before Christmas but the restaurant was empty. The meal started out with an old stale cool loaf of bread. When we asked the waiter to bring us another loaf, he said that "they said it was fresh baked". He brought out another loaf that was warm but cleary just came out of the microwave. The appetizer of Bacon wrapped shrimp was ok and seemed like it had been heated up in the microwave as well. We were a little nervous when our main courses arrived but they did not disappoint. Overall, evening was good but not great as in the past.

The difference in my opinion between Ruth Chris and Shula's is that of course Ruth Chris is a la cart however Ruth Chris experience is much much better. A co-worker of mine has been talking about this place forever, well I finely gave it a shot. Wow! Was I impressed. My wife and I both had a steak, best I have had in Orlando. The service was outstanding, our waiter Justin was very knowledgable and suggested all of our Martini's, Appetizers and Wine. Check out the Round Pond Cabernet, I hope they still have it on the Wine list when we go back for my birthday. The young general manager Larry also stopped by to thank us for our business, something I dont see too often when I dine out now adays.

The menu was all over the place in regards to selection. None of it looked spectacular, just so-so. The service was unenthusiastic and was only trying to sell the most expensive things on the menu (ex. we were wanting a Malbec and she recommended a blended wine that had no Malbec in it and it was $69). The booths are really awkward. We're both tall people and our feet were barely touching the ground. The ambience was weird. We received the "guest of the day" greeting card signed by the staff (except our server who signed it at the table), but it was only a card and so just a really weird gesture of appreciation.
