During our visit we completely enjoyed Spiro, the bartender (not sure of the spelling of his name). As for our dinner, the food, view, ambiance was amazing. Some very fine tuning concerning the service needs to be completed in order for us to dine here again. My husband wasn't finished chewing the last bite of his entree, when he was asked, "are you still working?" His mouth was full so he struggled to answer. His wine and water glass were removed without asking if he'd like some more water or just pouring more water(we had ordered a bottle of sparkling and would have enjoyed more). In one word - abrupt. If the service became more refine and relaxed, this could very well become a favorite place for us.

The resturant was beautiful but our service was not we had to wait about half and hour for our entree after our salad. The food was very good except I thought the hamachi was supposed to be served sushi style and it was served well done but tasty. Our waiter just didn't seem interested and with tip yes I did leave a 20 percent tip out bill for 2 was 300.00 I've been to his other resturants and loved them it's a shame my total experience was not what I expected.I hope you send this to the resturant and you can use my name because I really would like to see R2L do very well I think it's what the city needs. Thanks W. Harris (reservation Monday night February 15th at 5:30)

The window seating is not really set up for couples. We as others had to share our space with another couple. I found this bringing the ambience level down. It prevented the intimacy level expencted for Valentine's Day. It wasn't that crowded that they couldn't have dispersed couples to other tables.

We arrived in time to see a spectacular sunset. The food was outstanding-especially the short rib that is the turf part of the surf and turf. Loved the beet salad with goat cheese. We wanted a leisurely dinner, and while the timimg between courses may have seemed too long for some people, we enjoyed the slower pace and enjoyed the view of the city. Servers were friendly and attentive.

Three of us went and two of whom ordered three different small dishes to share. I ordered the salmon dinner over a mushroom sauce, which was excellent. The three apps were the mac n cheese, cheesesteak bites and rabbit nachos. The rabbit nachos were the best dish we all agreed. Drinks are expensive but you only need one or two. The service was fine, but a little too formal. They staff wore suits and I think black button-ups would be more appropriate for the contemporary atmosphere. The crowd was a little snoody and a bit on the quiet side. Overall, it was a good view and I would recommend it for some apps and drinks before a night out in Philly.

My boyfriend and I visited for the Valentine's Day menu (light bites, seafood salad, duo of filet and short rib and dessert sampler) and ordered a side of mac & cheese as well. The dinner itself was awesome - the main course should be a fixture on thier menu as it was amazing (even though the waiter didn't ask how we wanted our filets cooked, they both came out perfectly). Mac & cheese also some of the better bites we've tasted. What a shame though that the dessert, the last thing we tasted, left much to be desired. 4 items on the sampler & R2L was 0-4...all were awful. Ambiance & service scored high points with us, so I would definitely go back...and just do without dessert.

As we came to expect at Gayle, everything about our first visit to R2L was fantastic. The room itself is instantly the best in the city, and the food and service matched the spectacular views. The crab cakes were the best I have had in a long time, and the surf and turf was outstanding. The hamachi sent over by Chef between courses was a great touch as well. Make sure to save room for the Vanilla Cake dessert, warm and moist, it is divine. Ryan has put together an excellent wine list as well, and he kindly picked a nice gem for us. We will be back often!!

Disappointed in the food and entree's were luke warm. Bread was one small portion the size of a half-dollar. Salads extremly small over dressed. Prices not worth the food or experience. Desert was good. Coffee came out warm not hot. People and wait staff very friedly. Scenic view was great. The bar lounge is small but quite comfortable and great to have a drink and over look the city. I might go back for a drink and the view but certainly not for dinner. This place will be around as long as the lease I can't see a lot of people returning. If your looking to help pay for the lease get there soon they need the help. If you're looking for a senic view with good food try "19" instead. Just go and have a drink and check out the scenic view

This place was amazing! Of course we booked 2 weeks in advance, then mother nature dumped 2 feet of snow on us the night of our reservation. Despite all this, R2L remained open!!! They allowed us to arrive late for our reservation which was because we had to scramble to find transportation because all train service was suspended. Very romantic and my girlfriend was certainly impressed with the view and the service. We will be back.

R2L is a tremendous addition to the Philadelphia restraurant scene! The view is incredible, but even the view does not do justice to the food. We went with my parents recently, and the food and service were wonderful. In fact, the food featured several of the classics that Chef Stern retired from Gayle (like the veal stew and the vanilla molten cake), along with several new dishes along the same line. If you want, you could just make a meal of the small plates, but then you'd miss out on the wonderful entrees.

The food was excellent, however I couldn't for the life of me figure out why they attempted to seat us in the middle of the restaurant. Our reservation had been booked weeks in advance and we had even called ahead to request window seating. Due to the blizzard, the restaurant was half empty; why the trouble getting a window seat when one was requested? After that, the food and the view were incredible. Great place to take a date, client or to impress the in-laws.

Food was good, but came out sporadically. Also, servings seemed inconsistent: I ordered an oyster flatbread to share that had 3 oysters, but someone at the bar ordered the same thing but his had about 8 oysters. Salmon was delicious, but was served on a very, very small plate. Suggestion: serve on a bigger plate and slap some mashed potatoes on there to fill up the space (and the belly!). Wine by the glass was very, very pricey. I'd probably go back for drinks, but not for dinner...it wasn't worth the pricetag. Beuatiful space, though. And I LOVED the flatware sculpture! Service was polite but a little too oversolicitous.

The restaurant was very well staffed and the servers, including our own waiter, were very observant and obliging. The food was not the best I've had in Philadelphia but the presentation was well done. The oysters rockefeller was a little dry, the salmon was delicious and the rib eye not as tender and juicy as a steakhouse. The Romaine salad aka Caesar salad was delicious and well presented. Stay away from the desserts we had the apple pie (presentation great taste lacking) and the beignets were not beignets at all but a sampling of three different baked/fried pastries. Overall this is a great place to take someone on a date with spectacular views (must request a window seat) or grab drinks at the bar as it seemed very lively.

    Dined on 1/28/2010
My first dining experience at R2L was less than impressive. The Restaurant week menu had a nice selection to choose from, however, the Chef was experimenting with flavors that did not go all that well together. The portion of bread brought to the table was fit for an elf. The food portions were miniscule. The Risotto appetizer was over-fried, with burnt taste. The Tuna also had a peculiar taste due to the fennel and sauce that did not compliment it well. The desert embarassingly small. Overall, the views are unmatched although the table setup closest to the windows creates an environment where those seated there are facing only a sky-high (albeit scary) panoramic view. Has a lot of potential but menu needs help.

My mother always said, "If you can't say anything nice..." So, I will refrain listing all the issues I had with our experience. Things that were enjoyable: the view, the dining room staff and the table we were given (#94). Not so enjoyable: the over "produced" plates and the odd ingredients/tastes added to almost everything. The decor is a little past chic and nearing tacky (zebra print? really?). Clientele is "suits" and their female pursuers. Bar area hard to navigate when crowded. The view is not enough reason to return.

I was so excited when I snagged a reservation for R2L. Being the newest suave restaurant in Philadelphia, my expectations were high. And after we took the private elevator up 37 floors, my date and I were not disappointed. With a gorgeous view of West Philly and outstanding interior design, you really feel like you're living the high life. The service was also exceptional. We were constantly looked after, but didn't feel claustrophobic. Every employee we dealt with was polite, even to us, a couple of college students. The food was excellent as well: standard fancy restaurant fare with names too long to pronounce and dishes too pretty to eat. But honestly, the food is not the tour de force of R2L; go for the view and the atmosphere!
