A word from Sasa
Sasa is a new Japanese inspired restaurant in Walnut Creek. Izakaya Restaurants are traditional small plate restaurants where friends go to have a drink and unwind after a long day. Situated in the historic 100 year old building that for many years housed the Walnut Creek Meat Market, this architectural jewel has been transformed into a ambiance that wows and invites guests to stay and enjoy the dining experience at SASA. Chef Cyrus Irudistan and Chef/Owner Philip Yang prepare Japanese influenced dishes from around the world. The staff welcomes you into their house and offers up comfort, hospitality and fun. The restaurant includes a full bar with a large Sake selection, outdoor patio, sushi bar and a commitment to fresh local seasonal faire.

Instead of reserving us a seat in the dining room, we were squeezed into the bar jam packed for world cup. I was with my family from the east coast and would have appreciated a seat in the dining room which is why we made the reservation in the first place. The drinks we ordered with the hostess while we were waiting didn't appear for twenty minutes. The server was sweet and attentive when she wasn't rushing around. It seemed the place was understaffed. My father and my sister are big sushi eaters, and gave the food a B-.

Gorgeous restaurant but we were not impressed. We requested a corner table due to hearing loss & received a corner table in the back room... next to a group of 20 women celebrating a birthday party. I would've heard better if I were seated in the center of the main dining room. Noone approached our table after 15 minutes of sitting so I had to ask for a server. A manager took our drink order & promptly sent a server over who took our small plate order. One plate was not what we ordered had to be sent back. We ordered 3 more small plates, 2 of which arrived at our table & 1 went to the table next to us. Thankfully I noticed & told the server. Food was decent, we liked the skewers, but no real WOW. Service is lacking & needs refining.

We had a great time. Awesome job on the remodel. Very trendy, very chic, yet comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Everything we tried was delicious, especially the Lettuce Wraps and the Sashimi. Definitely some of the freshest fish I've ever had anywhere. Melt in your mouth Tuna. Hint; take the time to let the staff educate you on the finer points of Sake, well worth it. We'll definitely be back!

Everything was absolutely perfect, resulting in a delightful dining experience. The food we ordered was just delicious and so beautifully presented. Service was personable and right on target. We cannot wait to introduce it to other friends of ours. We took a couple with us, and we all relied on the waiter's suggestions. Everything was spot on, and we all left happy and satisfied. This was our second time at Sasa, & the first time we ate at the sushi bar. You won't find a better one anywhere around.....and in a gorgeous environment.

The waiter was great and helpful with suggestions. Tempura Prawn Lettuce Wraps and Asparagus Goma-ae stood out! The food was excellent and sitting outside on the new patio is a great way to enjoy the evening in Walnut Creek. We will be back!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2005VIP
    Dined on 6/1/2010
It's all about the food in this fairly new Walnut Creek restaurant. Although the service is sincerely helpful, there are time lapses when a server cannot be found or an order was not delivered. There is nothing on this menu that disappoints-with the exception of the cold soba noodles which were really bland. The food has taken us back 4 times. However, the seating is definitely a drawback! The highback chairs and tables are most uncomfortable. The height is awkward for eating. The front room has aesthetic appeal, except for the t.v's. The back room is a disaster-cold and unappealing.

The Blue Ginko in Lafayette has been our go-to sushi place for years. So, when we heard Phil was taking the leap with a high-end place in WC, we were very excited. We have been there twice now, and our hopes have been met and exceeded. The fish is about as fresh as you can get it, and the expanded menu offers many exciting choices beyond sushi/sashimi. The atmosphere/ambiance rivals anything you'd find in SF. Great location and easy valet parking out front. A home run for Phil and the gang. We will be back many times in the future.

Sasa was one of the best restaurant experiences I have had. The staff was warm and accomodating from the moment we arrived. Our waiter was knowledgable, funny, and excellent at reading a table and meeting the customers needs. We were a table of many women, so you can imagine the constant requests. Our waiter met each one of our needs with grace and experience. I would recommend Sasa to all I know. It has something for everyone....you do not have to be a sushi lover to enjoy Sasa's menu. The menu was well thought out and reasonably priced.

We really enjoyed our dining experience. Out waiter was very attentive, responsive and friendly. The food was very tasty and the portions were generous eventhough they were "small plates" The wine seletion was good and unlike some of the newer restaurants, you received an normal portion of wine, unlike the 4 ounce glasses some of the other places are pouring at full price. We spent close to $100 but feel we got our money's worth and did not go away hungry.

Good food, drink, and a staff that tries and will improve the longer it's open (we went just a couple of weeks after it opened.) THE GOOD: Beautiful interior and overall atmosphere! They did a really nice job on the outdoor patio (even though it faces an alley). The service was friendly and efficient. THE BAD: What can I say, the place is WAY OVER PRICED!!! $11 margarita that only filled half a martini glass... $7 for 2 small pieces of salmon sushi... $9 for a large Sapporo beer... This place is not for the faint of wallet. The actual sushi was just OK. When you are paying these kind of prices, the food should shine. (best thing on the menu was the Tempura Shrimp Lettuce Wraps). THE BOTTOM LINE: This place is just what downtown Walnut Creek DOESN'T need. We have way too many over-priced dinning options as it is. Plus, the food and drinks were just not that grea

Every once in a while a new restaurant opens up and immediatly you know "this is it!" Manhattan feel, not like anything else in the East Bay. They have captured the culture and energy of the Izakaya pubs you can find in Tokyo. Great "Sake" list. Nice touches in the restaurant, like the water curtain at the entrance, gas torches, old brick, wood, stone. Could not make it all the way through the menu. Too much to choose from. Izakaya menu and full Sushi Bar. Did not have wine, but the choices are well thought out and the pricing is very fair. Servers very knowledgeable on Japanese food! They hired really nice people. We had fun!
