A word from Sow's Ear
Sow's Ear Restaurant, established in 1986, is located in the Silverpick Lodge, one mile south of Durango Mountain Resort. Set amongst the beautiful San Juan mountains, the Sow's Ear is the longest running restaurant in the area with a new owner and head chef George Mehaffie taking over in May 2008 bringing new ideas and fresh seasonal menus to the restaurant, while continuing the tradition of "the best steaks on the mountain". Come up and see us and enjoy a unique mountain dining experience.

  • Although they serve quality
    OpenTable Diner Since 2011

Although they serve quality beef the chef has something to be desired. We had a table of 7 and between us we had 3 different main dishes. A ribeye with a completely fowl homade sauce, a seasalt and 5 peppercorn crusted ribeye, which left us wondering where are the peppercorns or seasalt and finally the shrimp with ravioli, which also had 3 big pieces of pork belly on the plate. Not sure when pork belly went with ravioli but it's not for a fine dining, let's leave the bacon wrapped shrimp to the pubs. Dessert had mixed reviews cheese cake was exceptional as well as the the others, but the creme brûlée although having exceptional flavor was not cooked properly so a disappointment. Overall it's not a horrible place, and I would say, 30% over$

  • Our one splurge
    OpenTable Diner Since 2011

This was our one big splurge on our Durango vacation, and we were not disappointed. The waitress Chrissy was very friendly, and helpful when it came to menu selections. The bread was delicious and the steak and elk were literally one of the best meals that my wife and I each recall eating. However, the best part of all was the view!

  • Great food, view, and service

We went to Sow's Ear after a day of skiing. The kids loved it, and the wait staff was extremely kid friendly. Could also see how it would be a great date night as well. Terrific view of the mountains out the windows. All the food was hand made and exceptional. Kids had the ravioli and adults had steaks (the petite plate would have been plenty!). We were all over stuffed but ordered two desserts to share anyway. Absolutely wonderful. Kids say it was the best dinner ever and we tend to agree.

We are repeat customers of the Sows Ear. The steaks are great, and presentation is above average. Only thing is the hours are not regular as they do quite a bit of wedding parties, so you need to call ahead to see if they are open to the public.

Always a favorite stop for us as the food quality and presentation are exquisite. The wine list offers some quality vintages at reasonable pricing. Service is always top notch as servers are knowledgeable about the menu offerings and the wine list.

We live just a few miles from the Sow's Ear and always really enjoy the food and service. And we always seem to find a gem of a wine to go with our dinner. We particularly like the option of having the small plates. We took friends there from out of town and really enjoyed having a large table where we could spend a relaxing dinner with great food.

Fabulous seasonal menu with amazing views year round. The Sow's Ear is quite close to the ski area, but because it's not on the slopes it's rarely over-crowded like some other restaurants on the mountain. We've never had to wait for a table at dinner. A great find!
