In a landscape populated by famed steak houses, with more opening to hoopla each month, Capital Grille beats them all overall --outstanding steaks and other items, best service of any NYC steakhouse (overseen by the charming, professional and delightful Jill),fine ambiance. Though we have long been devotees of Peter Luger, Capital Grille is the real steakhouse of our choice when we want an always satisfying meal and fine dining experience without a hassle and want to feel "at home." Can't beat it!

Fabulous dining whether having meat or fish. Impeccable service. Many seating options for all occassions. Appointed lovely from prism glass cieling in the main dining room to banquets and private dining rooms. Wonderful wine. Well located near Grand Central Train Station and many hotels such as Hyatt and Helmsley in midtown and subway.

We were visiting NYC and decided to go with a familiar restaurant. We are from South Florida and have dined at CG previously. The food was excellent and the service was as well. Everything about our experience was positive and we look forward to our next meal at Capital Grille.

As always the food was excellent, and also as always the price was very high. We had previously been to the Capital Grill in Baltimore on several occassions but this was our first visit to the NYC Capital Grill and the quality of the food and service was exactly what we have come to expect at a restaurant of this price range. My only complaint was that the table we were seated at was fairly close to the bar and due to the noise at the bar it was often hard to hear the dinner conversation. It may be worthwhile to consider some type of glass partition wall between the bar and the tables. Just a suggestion.

On our return visit to Capital Grille,we were seated in another room which got us to appreciate the restaurant's novel design and architecture. It is really striking as are the variety of seating arrangements. The pumpernickel bread was so scrumptious that I ate two slices with abandon---so uncharacteristic for me. The menu is varied and only difficulty is in making eliminations. Specials are always exceptional as are the staple items. Everything is prepared with care and presented beautifully. Perhaps what elevates the experience, however is the attentiveness of the service. Our server was almost intuitive in his ability to anticipate our every need and checked back often to make sure all was to our liking. Excellent restaurant!

Having eaten I this particular restaurant on many occassions , I was dissappointed for the first time. It appears as though the entire staff has been changed, My normal waitress has quit and her replacement , although quite polite for his first week cost my guest and myself in $200 in charges he forgot to mention beforehand. The biggest was a $150 bottle of wine of which I couldn't partake in before of medical reason. So when my associate cleary requested a particular glass of wine , we found it unusal when he brought the whole bottle. It was not until he opened and offered a tasting that he understood that a glass was all that what was needed. Not wanting to make a scene , my guest had the rest re-corked and paid the bill.

WE love the place - but my dining companion did NOT like the yellow part of the lettuce used in her steak salad - and I had ordered the scallop special. There was an extremely funky taste about - whether it was the scallops or salad I am unsure. I am even unsure if these were true "scallops" - the consistency was strange. And no - we did not complain during our dining experience. LOVE the place - the lunch was not very lovable

Some service flubs - busboy standing at table waiting for my guest to finish oysters so he could clear (balance of meal had not yet been ordered, so that wasn't the issue). Waiter reversed the "doneness" we each ordered for our respective (different) steaks. Dessert special mis-described. It was just kind of sloppy and under-managed and at those prices, it really should be fairly flawless. I do, however, like the joint and will return.

We had a wonderful time. It was my birthday and there was a card waiting for me on arrival, and they also brought me a piece of cake big enough to share. The service was impeccable, the steak was fantastic, and the atmosphere was exactly what one would hope for. Open Table comments were spot on, and we were very pleased with our choice.

The food was quite good. The service was not. It was hard to get our server's attention. It seemed like his more important tables were in the room behind us and our table was really an afterthought. If the tables in the other room were, indeed, VIP tables then they should have been his only tables. I have had very good experiences at Capital Grill3 in the past, but this one will certainly make me think twice before booking again.

I was looking forward to having their fried calamari, which used to be light, crispy and delicious, but it was soggy and greasy. But I truly appreciate their practice of providing black napkins for dark-attired customers for a lint-free lap.

  • The place is a business lunch
    OpenTable Diner Since 2007
    Dined on 3/14/2008
The place is a business lunch spot, quick service, meat looks like the thing to order. We ordered salads they were around $18.00 a piece but here was hardly any greens, salad skimpy all around. On top of it lettuce was iceberg. Why can't they put some more greens, how expenisve can they be ? make it a nice plentiful salad, it would make people happier. Women like to have luncheon salads if they are watching their weight. The Palm gives you a beautiful green salad with their lunch special. This is constructive criticism.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 3/11/2008
It was a last minute decision for my boyfriend and I to go there for dinner. It was one of the best dining experiences I have had in a while. It was right after work so the bar was crowded. They ended up seating us in a quiet back room all by ourselves as to not be bothered by the noise level of the bar area. The wait staff was excellent, attentive, informative, friendly. I had the salmon, it was delicious!! Cooked to perfection and and the sauce was amazing. Usually you go to a place known for steak and if you don't get the steak, you will be disappointed because the rest of the choices are mediocre. Not this time! Highly recommended and I will definitley return for both lunch and dinner very soon!

While not a big fan of chain restaurants, The Capital Grille does impress. From the beautiful dining room to the surprisingly diverse menu, all will find options for their palette. Service always impresses and defies the steakhouse mantra of rude and guff. Even better if someone else is paying.
