A word from Black Trumpet
Black Trumpet is a two-story bistro and wine bar in the heart of Portsmouth’s historic old port. Both floors offer views of the Piscataqua River and the oft-photographed tugboats that still escort enormous tankers into the harbor. Our first floor dining room offers a cozy, romantic setting with warm, unassuming service. The upstairs wine bar is a more intimate, convivial space. The menu changes every six weeks to capitalize on the freshest seasonal ingredients. The wine list features a variety of unheralded gems that pair well with the bold flavors of Chef Mallett’s cuisine. Black Trumpet’s cuisine reflects the chef-owner’s culinary curiosity, drawing inspiration from the Mediterranean as well as the Americas. A typical Black Trumpet menu may include influences from Spain, North Africa, Turkey and the Mexican heartland. Reservations are accepted in our dining room, the upstairs wine bar is first-come-first-served.

Food was great! However, it was much louder than I expected and not nearly as romantic. The service was terrible. We waited more than 20 minutes to put in a drink order. Then once it arrived, it sat on a counter across from us for another 5 minutes, waiting for our waitress to bring it to our table.

What a remarkable place for your palate, your happiness, and your soul! Local foods prepared with impeccable craft entertain your taste buds with beautiful textures, spices, and a most magnificent blend of flavor harmonies and subtlety. Nested on a side street adjacent to the harbor, this impeccable restaurant teases you inside with its name and historical architecture. Then you are welcomed and nourished with hospitality and some of the finest cuisine in the northeast. Mushrooms are abundant on the menu but they are used in ways that bring earth and sea together in celebration of this particular place. Enter and be entranced! The paella is a harvest of wonder!

Never write reviews but felt I had to. Just Excellent. From Quality of food to ambiance, very good value for money. It made our two night trip to Portsmouth from Boston a pleasure. The restaurant on the second night was more expensive and did not compare. Wich we had gone to The Black Trumpet twice !!!

It is not often that the chef has a deft touch with the vegetables and all aspects of the menu. Clearly a basque, portuguese french influence. Tapas type starters with great flavors. The cheese selection is fabulous and not seen many places. Good selections with great fruit counter points. I have been there twice recently and the entrees were perfectly seasoned. The produce and seafood were clearly fresh and the best available. Cooked to perfection and not an after thought like many places. All of the flavors were balanced and well paired. I would skip the dessert, had a dry uninteresting flourless tort. The wine selection is limited but good. Beer was warm but okay. Noisy Overall will go again. Best of Portsmouth in my opinion.

My most recent dining experience was a bit disappointing, especially bringing out of town guests. I have always felt that the Black Trumpet was my favorite Portsmouth fining dining establishment, but now I'm not sure. The service and ambiance were a standout, but the some of the food dishes were not up to par. It seemed like the chef was trying too hard to create interesting combinations which in some cases fell short. I won't give up, but I'll be a bit more cautious selecting dishes in the future.

During a recent four-day visit to the Portsmouth area, we enjoyed Black Trumpet so much that we returned a second time. This place is a gem - rich with history and creative, delicious food. Every morsel was a treat and our server could not have been more friendly or helpful. She was relatively new, so the owner spent a fair amount of time with us describing the dishes, history of the place, etc. A real bonus. Ask for a table upstairs w a view of the working waterfront.

We loved the white peach and fennel salad. Two of our diners tried the chicken prepared with a toasty crust - also delicious. The mussels in a tomato-based broth were excellent, very tender. We did not have dessert, but the menu choices looked excellent. The chef came to visit our table for feedback, which was a nice touch. We will definitely return.

Perhaps our favorite Portsmouth restaurant. The Black Trumpet offers an interesting variety of dishes, well prepared, in a great ambiance. Wine list is not very large, but an eclectic and well=chosen selection offering some gems from Spain, Portugal, and Argentina - good values. The room is very attractive in old waterfront brick chic, but at times a little noisy for comfortable conversation.

The food was good - it didn't blow me away, but it was certainly decent. The quahog chowder was very flavorful and the foie gras dish was incredibly tasty, but the service was extremely slow and not at all attentive. It took almost 45 minutes to get a bottle of wine and the bread. All in all, it didn't make my top 10 list, but it's possible that I might just give it a second try as the food is certainly worth trying even if the waiter wasn't exactly worth writing home about...

Hi There, The food was good, not amazing but everything was tasty. Food Price was fair, wine a bit pricey. Ambiance good- we like the old bricks/posts/copper and modern mix. Chairs are a bit dull in comparison to the rest. Perhaps something on the walls? More original candles on the table? Something missing The least exciting was the service. Not bad but our server was making no extra efforts. He didn't seem happy or excited about the food or particularly interested with us. To be fair, we've noted a similar attitude at other venues in Portsmouth. We'll certainly keep the Black Trumpet restaurant in mind for our next trip to Portsmouth but because we were not completely thrilled, we'll first see what else is there. Hope this

The food selections were impressive... our group of three ordered several different items. All were delicious. Expertly prepared. Our waiter was very knowledgable. The noise level was exceptionally loud from one party of 4. They seemed to have no regard for anyone else in the restaraunt. We enjoyed our dinner very much, except for the noise. Many wonderful touches, like the different types of bread, the butter with mustard flavor, and again the food was outstanding.

I have to say hands down this was one of the BEST restaurants I've been to. I've eaten at high end restaurants in Boston and some do not even compare to this place!! Not only was the food absolutely amazing (kudos to the chef!!!), the ambiance and service we both outstanding. It really means a lot when you know they pay attention to comments made online when booking reservations. I asked for a window seat if possible and when I got to the restaurant, they already had two options for me, one of which we took overlooking the harbor up in the wine bar. I haven't stopped talking about this place to everyone I know and they all want to go. I definitely will be back!!!!

The Black Trumpet is an amazing restaurant and has moved into my personal #1 spot on the seacoast only after one visit. I have a great appreciation for their practice of sourcing local foods, and had a wonderful New England Farm Fed Ribeye with gorgonzola butter. My only regret is that I didn't order the Summer Paella as well, but I'll be heading back soon to take care of that. The service was excellent and the atmosphere is very cozy and charming.

Dinner was a delightful experience. My friend and I both had "the stimulus package", the special of the evening. Since my friend was vegetarian, the chief substituted a vegetarian dish for the tenderloin. We appreciated the flexibility. The dining room is noisy. We were seated next to a very noisy party which was less the pleasant.
