A word from Russia House Restaurant - Herndon
Set in historic Herndon, the Russia House Restaurant offers Russian hospitality and culinary excellence in all its details. The restaurant opened in July of 1992 by the friendly owners Ali and Homeyra Darugar, and together they created an atmosphere of aristocratic dining with classic cuisine, with the warm feeling that you are dining at your aristocratic grandmother’s table. Mrs. Darugar moved from Russia with her grandparents to Switzerland, where she learned to cook in her grandmother’s kitchen. She brought her great culinary talents here to the United States and created the exquisite menu and served as the head chef in the first few years the restaurant was opened. The restaurant features Russian, Continental and Georgian cuisine with a French flair.

  • This passes my "Outback Test"

This passes my "Outback Test" with ease. If someone charges me for high-end restaurant prices, they usually don't surpass a decent meal at a decent price with decent service from Outback Steakhouse. I usually walk away dissapointed thinking that I should have just gone to the chain steakhouse for dinner. If I am going to pay slightly more, I want more value than Outback. The Russia House Restaurant certainly passed the test and provided a wonderful dining experience. I look forward to going back.

The Russia House was a great experience. The food was fabulous, the service even better and the atmosphere lent itself to great conversation. The vodka, especially the butterscotch vodka, was a delight! I would suggest this restaurant to anyone!

Delicious food, romantic and/or peaceful ambiance. We were celebrating a birthday romantically and the restaurant was happy to accomodate my request for a quiet corner and a bit of privacy. They remembered the request and comped pastry with a candle and wished my companion a Happy Birthday. Food is always delicious there, and the martinis are wickedly strong. Pricey, but worth it for a truly charming evening out.

Very nice mix of French and Russian cuisine. While maybe Russian cuisine is not my favorite, The Russia House did a great job of delivering it with an authentic presentation and taste. The restaurant was absolutely empty at lunchtime during our visit, but that is really a shame, as the owner/server was terrific and the ambiance was as great as the food. Overall a great introduction to Russian cuisine that I will remember.

Exceptional evening with exceptional dining! Notable wine list, but prices were a bit high. They could have had a better selection of low to mid priced wines. The higher priced wines were very good and well chosen. We are looking forward to our next dining occasion at this fine restaurant.

In a word: EXCELLENT! The food was all homemade right in the restaurant. Thus, everything was piping hot and fresh. The well seasoned meats (beef and lamb) were fork tender and juicy. (They had fresh fish and vegetarian selections on the menu as well.) The bread is made and baked fresh right in the restaurant. Since they baked it in small batches, you could count on getting a piping hot roll every time. We also had coffee and dessert, which was equally enjoyable. We selected the cream puffs, which were made in the restaurant. They were delicate, tender & lightly sweet. that We received impeccable service! If you want something different, and surprisingly delicious, make a trip to Herndon and try out Russia House. You won't regret it.

We were really looking forward to our dinner at the Russia House, but were greatly disappointed. The ambiance was very nice, as was the service. But the food was horrible. My salad was overwhelmed with dressing and my stuffed cabbage entree was lost in a soup of sauce. My husband's Chicken Kiev was drably presented with brown sauce and was unlike any chicken kiev we ever had in Russia. Prices are very inflated for what you get.

We were greeted at the door by a very friendly and welcoming host/owner. Seated at the perfect table and immediately invited to partake of some wonderful vodka. Appetizers were excellent (chose the traditional Russian sampler) as was the entree. (I chose the cherried duck on a bed of sauerkraut). Will definitely go back.

Staff attention very pleasant (though took awhile for check to be brought... might have been short-staffed). Food good, but menu could have used a little more excitement plus additional Russian-influenced dishes with interesting descriptions. Entrees seemed over-priced by a few dollars, and cocktails as well, given the "neighborhood" feel of the place. Ambience a little old-fashioned. Nice experience overall.

I'd have to say it was disappointing. We started with the Russian hors d'oeuvres, very small portions of six or seven items that were mostly bland or tasteless accompanied by stale little toasts. One of us had the rainbow trout which was topped by an uninteresting creamy sauce. The fish itself wasn't bad and the dish included small roasted potatoes, broccoli, carrots and sauerkraut. The other main course we had was the salmon, again topped by a creamy sauce and the same vegetables. Not a bad piece of fish but nothing memorable. The service was attentive once we were seated. We waited a long time to be greeted and shown to our table. For dessert we had the creme brulee which was creamy enough but kind of tasteless. The Alsatian wine was good.

I'm glad we found this restaurant. The food was excellent, the staff went out of their way to make sure your meal was good, and the atmosphere included dim lighting, Russian art-work, and classical music. We went on a Friday night and it was surprisingly empty, which made it good for a romantic meal. We had soup, salad, and an entree. Our glasses of wine were good. Location is in downtown historic Herndon, which has live music on some Friday nights, so you could maybe time your visit with one of those events.

I have eaten at this restaurant several times and have found it to be excellent each and every time. While the food is not cheap, you will not complain that you got anything other than quality while there. Great place for a special occasion. The Duck with Sour Cherries is one of their signature dishes and a marvel of cooking.

Waiters and hosts are knowledgeable and courteous. Food is all made on premises and tastes fresh and wonderful. We went to the Russia House in Herndon for Mother’s Day and had a very good meal! I made the reservation though Open-Table and received conformation quickly. The restaurant called later in the day to confirm the reservation. Our table was ready for my family as soon as we arrived with no wait whatsoever. We were greeted by a nice host who seemed happy to have us dinning with them. My wife and I both had the filet, hers with the Béarnaise sauce and mine with Shallot brandy and Roquefort cheese. They were both fantastic! We both sampled off of each plate and the filet was perfect and each sauce was unbelievable. Our kids had the Juju kabob chicken and the beef stroganoff which they both said was very good. The attention to detail was perfect
