A word from South End
The raw talent, experience, and passion of two young people is the foundation for South End, a neighborhood restaurant and gathering place in the charming town of New Canaan. Chef/Owner Nick Martschenko and General Manager Michelle Cooper bring seasonal comfort food and inspired libations together with an atmosphere that is casual, familiar, and befitting of a small urbane town.

The design combines the old with the new. Rustic hardware elements are set against reclaimed barn wood paneling, and light fixtures are antique in design, while utilizing a more contemporary flare. Beige Italian linen drapes are complimented by contrasting black tufted linen upholstered banquette seating. Oversized color prints of a misty countryside and farm animals are a nod to Chef’s sustainable food practices.

Our new favorite New Canaan restaurant! The beautifully renovated interior is very inviting. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Everyone at our table loved their food. The meatball appetizer and pasta bolognese were especially memorable. But there is a lot more than Italian food on the menu. I can't wait to go back and try the steak frites. Definitely save room for dessert as they were excellent also.

A spectacular addition to the ever increasing number of Fairfield County restaurants owned and operated by talented chefs. South End has transformed the space formerly operated as the Pine Social into an open, inviting and comfortable destination. However, as with any good restaurant it's about the food and Chef Nick Martschenko's menu is varied yet focused. Our first dinner there included a cheese board, Maine Diver Scallops, Wild Halibut and Chicken Paillard. Each dish bursting with flavor, each cooked perfectly. We were having such a good time that we even had desert, the ricotta doughnuts with lemon curd and chocolate sauce. Even the service, was spot on, no small feat for a just opened restaurant. We are looking forward to many more vi

Funny, I had written a detailed review of this place once before that was not exactly flattering, but it seems to be gone. Briefly, on the night we went, the service was very poor, the food was so-so, and the prices were high. We don't plan to go back.

Phenomenal! I have eaten at the Pine Social 4 times now and for the past 2 visits had Chris as my waiter... Love love love the young man, always happy, enthusiastic, and fun! The food has been fantastic each time as well. My husband and I ate there this week and I had the short ribs and he had the chicken. Absolutely delicious. The tuna roll appetizer is a must when visiting the Pine Social. I have eaten with my girlfriends other times and also had fantastic experiences. Can't wait to go back!

This restaurant had decent food, but the serving sizes were very small and the prices super high for what you got. Additionally, there was no presentation style at all... the squash ravioli was nothing more than 6 raviolis on a plate, not even any greenery to dress up the plate.

Our third visit to Pine Social and they're still impressing me with their transformation from Rocco's. Food was generally good, though the Lobster Mac & Cheese was bland and came with a large and unexpected serving of lobster shell. The Goat Cheese & Bacon sandwich is an absolute star, a must-have sandwich. Finished off the evening with a Red Velvet cake with was decent, though the cake seemed a little overly salted. While we're thrilled that Pine Social is doing well, it was jammed at 9pm on a Friday night, the noise of two large parties coupled with a live musician at the front was deafening. There's not much the restaurant can do in situations like this, though I'd strongly consider silencing the musician until the dinner crowd thins

Very nice meal in a lovely restaurant. Chicken was quite delicious, waiter agreeably substituted the vegetable when I indicated that I am not a fan of broccoli rabe. Nice to dine at a restaurant in New Canaan that is just slightly off the beaten path with plenty of available parking. The only downside was the cheesecake dessert, which was a bit off in texture and flavor and not worth the calories [not that it stopped me from eating it]. I will be back.

We were late for our reservation, but they were able to seat us anyway. The restaurant was full on a late Friday evening, but the service was quick and polite. The food was good but not great. The lobster bisque was a bit thin and the shrimp floating in it a little overcooked. The salads were great and looked delicious, but a little overdressed (strong vinegar taste). The steaks were cooked well and enjoyed, presentation could be a little nicer. All in all a good experience and we would try it again.

The food is pretty awful. We sent back one dish (macaroni and cheese with lobster)because it was so dry and totally tasteless. The other three diners were less than satisfied with their choices ... meatloaf, hamburger, pasta with lamb Bolognese ... all pretty tasteless. Our waitress was very apologetic and lovely. We will not go back.

The change in chef here has been dramatic! The food is much more interesting and much better. From burgers to veal Milanese it is very good. Good salads and appetizers to choose from as well. It does get to be very noisy tough as the restaurant fills - hopefully a bit of additional soundproofing will diminish the sharpness.

When we walked in, we were greeted cheerfully by the hostess. We had a drink at the bar and then proceeded to our table in anticipation of a great meal. Our reservaton was at 7:00pm on a Friday and the restarant was just beginning to fill up. Our waitress took quite a while to greeet us, and when she did, none of us could understand her due to her thick eastern european accent. We asked her a few basic questions about the menu that she was unable to answer. I order the spinach salad (was decent) and the burger, which was touted to be grinded in house. Our food took over over hour to arrive and the burger was the worst one I have literally ever had. I ordered medium rare and it came out dark brown and did not taste like beef. Yuck!

We went on a Tuesday night and it was a nice, quiet, no-fuss, want-to-get-out-of-the-house with good girlfriends kind of place. Relaxing ambiance with sophisticated decor that's not over the top. Excellent service. Besides our well-informed waitress, all other employees had smiles on their faces. (This is a definite reflection on management.) Convenient parking right in front is a plus. House salad was deliciously farm fresh. If it's someone's birthday, they make a thoughtful little fanfare for the birthday person. Would definitely go back.

Another great restaurant for New Canaan. Loved the tuna rolls and spinach salad apps, and the bass. Creative use of ingredients make tasty combos not seen on every restaurant's menu. The ambience is lively, but we were still able to hold a pleasant conversation. The service was attentive and we felt our waiter sincerely wanted us to have a nice dinner. The wine list could use some more mid-range choices, but we were still able to find a bottle we liked. We will definitely return.

The menu was varied, imaginative and well cooked. The place has a welcome buzz that New Canaan badly needs. The wine selection by the glass did not match the food in quality or variety though - not enough French or New Zealand choices. Also the beers on tap were a tired selection. One or more New England micro-brews would have enhanced it ( I count Sam Adams as a major...).

This restaurant was only open for 2 weeks, but it has everything ready to do with no snafus! Fabio was our waiter and he was great! He recommended the beet salad and it is the best in Fairfield County! And only $9.00. Sea bass was done in a cider vinegar sauce with pancetta, spinach and apples and was done to perfection. Filet Mignon was an extra large piece -- done just right. Food came out piping hot. Very nice wine selection (they had prosecco!) and a full bar. Fun and lively, even on a Wednesday night.
