A word from South End
The raw talent, experience, and passion of two young people is the foundation for South End, a neighborhood restaurant and gathering place in the charming town of New Canaan. Chef/Owner Nick Martschenko and General Manager Michelle Cooper bring seasonal comfort food and inspired libations together with an atmosphere that is casual, familiar, and befitting of a small urbane town.

The design combines the old with the new. Rustic hardware elements are set against reclaimed barn wood paneling, and light fixtures are antique in design, while utilizing a more contemporary flare. Beige Italian linen drapes are complimented by contrasting black tufted linen upholstered banquette seating. Oversized color prints of a misty countryside and farm animals are a nod to Chef’s sustainable food practices.

After only one visit, I'd say they have excellent food, and the courage to let good ingredients shine. (The kale salad is monochrome and unfussy and tastes fantastic.) The wine list was interesting, and had quite a few unfamiliar and tempting bottles. The service was okay -- well meaning but unpolished. (For example, frequent interruptions of conversation to ask 'how is everything' implies that the waiter is addressing needs on his schedule not the diners'. I think it is preferable when wait staff is in the mode of attentive monitor -- if I look around, it is easy to catch someone's attention.) There is a sign that they are improving staff -- at least one person was in training.

It was a Saturday night and the place was full. The noise level was so high that even at a table for three it was hard to hear each other. While the menu is creative the execution was not. Fish was dry and overdone. Service was fine.

Three of us had lunch last week. This was my third time at South End and I could not wait to introduce friends to this fun spot with great food. The food did not disappoint, but the service was awful. Our waiter was annoyed by our request for a piece of bread to go with an omelet and never refilled glasses in our 3 hours there. He served three other tables who arrived after us and took 40 minutes to bring our bill. I'm pretty patient and have no problem rewarding good service--even mediocre service when it's busy. But South End was less than half full and I'm beginning to understand why.

During my first visit at South End, our party ordered 4 different appetizers and each of us had an entree. Each entry was quite good and several were outstanding. Notables included the grilled octopus, the house made pastas, the scallops and the duck. The beef special of the night was a filet; I would rate it as only fair as we had asked for medium rare and it arrived as medium well. But aside from the I overdone steak, the food was very good to excellent The service was pretty good. We really enjoyed the relaxed, non pressured approach even though the restaurant was full. The server, however did not seem to have an expert perspective on dish preparations.

Excellent addition to the local dining scene with a casual modern flair - lively and hip. Menu is thoughtful and offers some inspired choices without being overly fussy, however the quality of the actual dishes was a bit uneven. Friendly and helpful wait staff, excellent wine list and fun place to spend a relaxed evening or out for drinks with friends. We'll be back to try more of the menu which I suspect offers more strengths than weaknesses. Somewhat pricey given it's not really a "special occasion" kind of place (2 of us spent over $200 for three courses and a couple glasses of wine) but there's nothing like it iin New Canaan and the chef's pedigree tells me that the food should mostly be delicious.

I loved everything about this restaurant. The cocktails at the bar were outstanding and the meal was very very good. We shared a few appetizers first - the meatballs, the octopus (so tender!) and the crispy artichokes and then also shared the pappardelle entree, which was delicious. All in all, a wonderful find and we can't wait to go back.

This was the fifth time my wife and I had dinner at South End and we love it! The food is always perfectly prepared with only the freshest of ingredients. My only problem there is that it's been difficult to choose which of many many dishes I want. This most recent time I had the billi bi soup, the organic roast chicken, and panna cotta. Everything was simply amazing. As always, the service was great and the overall ambiance was friendly and lively. Can't wait to return.

Went with friends to south end for a Friday night dinner. Arrived for a 7:45 reservation and the bar was hoping. We had a great meal, the mussels were outstanding as well as the fresh pasta. The place was busy the whole time we were there. Was loud b not too loud to be able to hold a comfortable conversation. Will definitely go back, much nicer then the place that was in the space previously.

I am hesitant to post such a glowing review for fear of making it that much harder to get a reservation in the future - ha ha. That said, South End is top-notch. You can tell just by studying the menu that they know what they are doing. The wine list had some very nice finds as well. Finally, the staff was simply great. We had an infant in tow for our anniversary dinner and they couldn't have been more gracious. A great dining experience in every respect.

I'm used to having to take the train to the city for food this good. The staff is warm and very well informed about the menu. There is something for everybody (my vegetarian friend raved about her selections, as did my husband who ordered the steak), and their Bolognese is the best - the absolute best - I have ever had. I also recommend the inventive Chop Chop salad. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, looking forward to going back soon.

We were a group of 4 dining before the South Pacific show at Waveny Park ( must see BTW). We happened to have Johann as our server (mentioned in an earlier review) and he indeed is one of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable servers ever, helpful but not intrusive. Our appetizers ( rabbit, fried artichokes, spinach salad, tuna tartare) and main course (hangar steak, halibut, salmon) were all beautifully prepared and wonderfully presented. Oh yes and dessert was great as well (smores pie and a panna cotta in a terrific strawberry/rhubarb sauce). No hesitation whatsoever to recommend and we'll be back!

We went with a party of six. The wait staff was very nice and attentive but there were numerous mix ups. Initially when taking orders they missed my husband so we had to flag the waiter back. He was very nice and apologetic about it. One dessert order that was brought was completely wrong but again, graciously corrected. Just when we were sure they had forgotten my husbands dessert (a scoop of ice cream) and were going to ask for the check, they brought it. It was busy, the restaurant is loud which may account for the confusion. It was not a bad experience and we probably will return

Mother's Day dinner was a fantastic celebratory event. Our waiter, noting our indecision on which glass of wine to try, offered samples to assist in our choice. Salads were fresh and entrees - all 5 ranging from pasta to halibut to steak - were all prepared flawlessly and arranged beautifully. And the desserts were wonderful, especially the crumble and the S'mores pie. This was a real find.

Although it has received mostly positive buzz, our Sunday Brunch experience at South End was meh. With the dining room no more than 10% full you would think that you would get extraordinary attention in a place with precious few customers--yet the service ranged from disinterested to non-existent. The food was also unexceptional. Salads were good, but we had to send one back because it was missing ingredients. The $16.00 burger was only average and the portion size was skimpy. The fries that came with it were delicious---but they were not hot enough and were already going limp and becoming soggy. Perhaps South End is worth trying for dinner. But you are advised to skip brunch--and maybe they should, too.

My fourth visit to South End did not disappoint. The grilled octopus appetizer was a tasty delight; our entrees of tagliatelle with Bolognese sauce, and grilled strip steak were both perfect. This remains one of our favorite restaurants- the ingredients are consistently of the highest quality, the recipes creative within a traditional framework, and always perfectly prepared and served.
