Was a bit disappointed. Took my boyfriend out to dinner to celebrate good news we had received and thought this seemed like a very nice place. Unfortunately, it didn't fit our description of "nice". Service was slow. Were out of several menu items. Received our appetizers before bread was even brought to the table. Main courses were mediocre, at best. I had the salmon served atop a raviola. Raviola was dry and rubbery, salmon was rather dry as well. My boyfriend had the duck, and found it to be dry and overcooked. All in all it wasn't a very good experience, especially as we were out to celebrate. Most likely will not be back to Village CA Bistro and Wine Bar and won't recommend to friends either.

I had the pork chop and the mixed greens salad. Both were overly salted - the pork chop was overly brined. I would not recommend this restaurant for any person with hypertension as it would most definitely elevate their blood pressure due to the excess of sodium in the food. The chef should learn to season food to the normal palate and not to his/her palate which appears to have been deadened to the taste of salt - thus requiring more salt for this person to be able to taste it. Looking at the crystals in the salad - it appears as if the chef also added accent (msg) to the salad in an effort to perhaps bring out the flavor of the salad greens? Many folks are allergic to msg - and using this in a salad is unnecessary.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008

Overall the food was great, especially the garlic soup. One item, the tuna tartar was not to my liking, taste or presentation. There were 2 things that bothered our group. One was when we were first being seated, there was a blotch of tomato sauce on the table cloth at the edge where it draped over the table. It was not the food from someone else's dinner that bothered us, but the attitude of the hostess when we asked if it could be changed. Initially the waiter did a good job but after he put our main dish down, we had a really difficult time getting his attention, especially when we wanted the check. We were almost late for the movie.

We shared the small plates between 4 of us. They were over priced for what you received. The crab fritters were fried batter - no crab, the ahi tartar was tasteless, grilled prawns, veggie flat bread, french fries, and margaretta's were good. The mesculin salad with almonds and bleu cheese was the best.

The food was pretty good: my date's chicken was moist, potatoes were delicious, but although I asked for medium-rare steak, it came out more like medium, with the edges more like medium-well. The waiter we had was odd; he started telling us the specials, and it sounded like he was in mid-sentence when he just turned and walked away to another table. We thought maybe something had happened and he would return to finish talking to us, but the next time he came back (10 min. later) he just came to take our orders. That was pretty rude. He also wasn't very friendly throughout our time there. Even though this isn't the fanciest restaurant in Santana Row, it's still got a pretty hefty price-tag, and I would have expected better service.

We have enjoyed the Village previously. The menu is not very extensive, but it does contain a lot of interesting food choices. They ARE willing to take suggestions and requests for changes with food. If you have an allergy, they are MORE than willing to help find an alternative or to prepare something a little differently to suit your needs. We also enjoyed a wine flight---whites. Two were fairly good, the third was ok, but the point for me was to try three different wines without getting sloshed. All of their flights seemed to have a decent pairing and interesting choices. All of their wines are pleasant choices and reasonably priced.

This is the second time in 2 weeks that I've had lunch during the week at Village Bistro. Both times, the service has been poor. It's as if the servers don't care about the patrons, leaving you waiting for a long time even though the restaurant isn't busy, not checking back, etc. The poor experience starts with the host, who doesn't seem that interested in having you dine with them. The food which is okay, not fantastic, doesn't counter-balance the service. I won't be going back.

The food was fine. We shared a few small plates and especially enjoyed the tortellini. However, the food was served too quickly with no gap between courses. The service was poor which spoiled the experience somewhat. The waiter disappeared for a long time which was hard to understand as there were only a few other diners. It took a very long time to get coffee and the check.

They don't seem to have a big selection of wine by the glass with "wine bar" in their name. They don't have good seafood (the tuna tartar was bland & small & oily... poorly done), and their chicken dish was dry & tasteless. However, their short rib was tender and flavor intensive & the mash potato is devilish. The waiter didn't inform us on the additional charge when we wanted to "swap" the potato for asparagus when both of our main courses had potatos. When we inquired about the extra charge for asparagus, the waiter said only sorry and proceeded to charge us. I won't go back to that place except when I need a fix of some tender short ribs!

They graciously took charge off for a garlic soup that really lacked flavor and seasoning. I felt there was too long a lapse between courses. Ahi tuna tartare was overpriced for the portion size and mediocre quality for the same price point compared to other restuarants. The oysters and musssels were excellent as well as the roast chicken and hamburger; the truffles mac and cheese was my daughter's favorite.

Village Bistro has some very nice dishes and the decor is beautiful. Problem is mostly the service. We returned only because we had a gift certificate to use from the previous visit, which was given to us because we'd had such very poor service. Once again, we were ignored most of the time and had to enlist the help of others to get service. We rarely saw our waitress and when we did, she was complaining about how busy she was. After things slowed down, we seemed to see her even less. She never came back to see if we wanted more coffee or anything else. Also, the wine list is not very good. Most of the wines are not recognizable to the average wine drinker. And, in trying some of these unknowns, we've been very dissappointed.

We sat outside, great for people watching. Ordered the bourbon spicy shrimp. The sauce was too overpowering for the shrimp, & the shrimp consistency wasn't right- either slightly overdone, or perhaps not that fresh. Sauce is very tasty, and good w/ bread. Also ordered the tuna tartare, served on little crisps. Presentation of the tuna was great, and it tasted good. On the recommendation of the server, I got the Pacific sole. It was INCREDIBLE! Done to perfection- served w/ a mashed potato and spinach (which can be a little boring if you go out to eat a lot), however they really did it perfectly. Fiance got the flat iron steak, which was good but I wanted to go back to my fish! Service is incredible, and as always go w/ their suggestion!

Our experience was good, and our server immediately handled a problem with our bill. My disappointment was that the short rib I ordered was served as three thick slices of beef served over the yummy horseradish mashed potatoes. I've ordered the same dish in the past and it was actually a short rib and much, much tastier. The kitchen should have notified me before making the substitution so I could make a choice.
