I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience at Pican. It was a birthday celebration and we were a group of four. Be careful if you have left overs that they take to the front for you to pick up when you leave...one of my guest food was "lost" or given to someone by mistake. So if you're really sitting at your table thinking your left overs will be good - make sure you know they will be there at the front door.

Absolutely wonderful - I loved it so much the first time I went with friends that I took a date there a week later. The staff is very welcoming - they remembered me when I came back. The food is some of the best I've had in a long time - the "Southern Foie Gras" is probably the best chicken liver I've ever had.

It's all about the excellent fried chicken (perfectly seasoned and juicy with a crisp outer shell) and the decadent mac n' cheese! The greens are good and they have an interesting selection of specialty drinks. I loved the lively atmosphere, but it might be a bit too loud to qualify as a romantic environment ... though I did start a love affair with their food! Arronette is an amazingly attentive, informative and friendly waitress, I'll be sure to ask to be seated in her section when I make my next reservation.

We had a reservation and the table we were given was by the bar where the waiters stand. we asked for another table and were told they are "preassigned". When pushed to explain further and insisting on a better table out of the crowd of waiters behinds, we got one. Service seems amateurish in general and slow. There was too long of a wait before we were asked if we want a drink, brought a drink menu and again until it the drink delivered. Food was okay. Better fried chicken at Brown Sugar Kitchen, for half the price. The crust was thick and some spots flavorless. The duck was good, so was the grits, mac and cheese. The room is a beautiful room.

We were told about Pican by a San Francisco chef. His recommendation was spot on. The restaurant was beautifully designed, the service impeccable and the food beyond description. If you savor good southern food prepared as if you were in NOLA or a small town in Mississippi but served in a beautiful Oakland restaurant Pican is for you. A great find!

Pican is a wonderful new addition to the Oakland dining scene! The Southern-inspired cuisine is comfort food to the max! I've visited on two occasions and enjoyed the fried chicken entree, she crab bisque and shrimp and grits - All deliciously prepared! While finishing our meal on a recent weeknight, Michael, the owner, came up to our table to personally thank us for dining at his restaurant. A perfect end to a perfect dining experience!

The pork belly was a bit tough. The fried chicken was outstanding and so was the mac and cheese. I think $2.00 for a slight drizzle of honey is a bit over priced. I think the door man (bouncer?) was a true gem I would go back for lunch but I'm not sure if I would return for dinner. Tack on valet parking and I think it was just a bit to pricey.

Everything was outstanding! The restaurant feels sophisticated without being pretentious. The floor staff was warm, knowledgeable and attentive without being overbearing. The food was wonderfully prepared and the presentation was awesome. My friend and I ordered 2 small plates and a main entree. Everything was coursed out with no extra plating charges. In true Southern style, if you order iced tea you're asked if you want "sweet tea" or non. I ordered the sweet tea and it tasted like I was right back in the South. Pican is definitely worth experiencing, you won't regret it!

We were greeted by 3 hosts who seemed to stare us down then one with a very fake smile and tone welcomed us. We sat at our table for a good 10 minutes or so before being greeted by our server. There seemed to be a lot of people standing around doing nothing. Our server was delightful and funny, and very attentive. The food was good, but I had a few issues. We had the shrimp and grits- really good and I'd recommend highly. The duck was a big disappointment in portion, not taste. They gave my husband 2 duck legs, which were tiny, and a huge portion of greens on the side. I could not believe that they didn't give any breast meat. For the price, a big disappointment. I'd go back, but try a variety of small plates instead of entrees.

Beautiful interior design, large yet intimate (not noisy), and the food was the best upscale southern dining cusine. The fried chicken is not to be missed, even if you order it to sample in addition to your other entree, then bag up the rest to take home. The pork chop was huge. Every thing we tried was prepared to perfection, delivered on time from the kitchen and was in just the right portions. We took some home since we wanted to save room for the fresh banana pudding with homemade vanilla wafers---not too sweet, perfect! I love the fact we didn't feel rushed, and our waitperson Michael, was excellent in providing just the right amount of attention coupled with an extensive background on all the food offerings. We'll be back...soon!

Very friendly and professional, well-trained staff: hosts, servers and bussers. The owner introduces himself to each table and asks how the meal is. Good cocktail selection and wines by the glass $8-13. Excellent dinner. Sea scallops with succotash and brown butter app was small but scallops were so fresh I thought they'd jump off my plate. Delightful she-crab and sherry soup. Absolutely the best fried chicken I have ever had. They have optional $2 truffled honey added table-side - oh yeah! Side grits was excellent, ribs delicious, and the chocolate pecan tart was divine. As good a meal as I've had anywhere in recent memory, and we parked on-street a half-block away. Vibrant crowd, everyone enjoying themselves. Skip SF & go East Bay

I had the Caesar salad for appetizer, the peppered salmon for entree, and the root beer float for dessert, all of which were quite tasty. Nothing particularly extraordinary, but being a San Franciscan visiting a town like Oakland, I wasn't really expecting much else. But again, the food was tasty. I was really put off by the large bald black man who greeted us at the door. It was a Tuesday evening, and we had reservations. Upon walking in, he informed me that they had a dress code and my jeans (Banana Republic btw) weren't really appropriate. I look around the dining area to see LOTS of guys wearing jeans and t-shirts. The food we chose was a nice mix of starters with one entree. that worked well for us (pricewize too) because it gave us an opportunity to try more of the tantalizing offerings hop-n-john and shrimp with grits among the highlights. We went to the restaurant for my husbands birthday for what we thought would be an excellent overall experience but what ended up being a disappointment. The ambience was excellent and the bar scene was great ....the service was also good.....the food on the other hand was not so great. My husband and I both ordered the fried chicken which at a soul food place how could you go wrong. We both ended up returning our chicken which was very salty and unedible. Our neighbor also stated that his chicken was salty although he did not return his. I definitely feel that the breast, leg and small portion of mac n cheese was not worth twenty dollars or above. I really want to support this restaurant but will not recommend it.

Our waiter was quite chatty, service started out slow, but once all orders were in, things moved along. The ambiance is quite nice, interior decorator is into texture and although subtle, it really added to the general feeling of being taken care in a special place. All our dishes were great although for having a great bourbon collection, the manhattan was so so and w/ a marischino cherry no less! Would definitely go back esp. for the smoked gouda mac and cheese.

Overall the food and experience was very good. Truly a southern feel, like being transported to another place and time. Our waiter was great, the decor and ambience of the main part of the restaurant was great. We were in a side room which they use for large parties, and it didn't have the warmth or energy of the main room. I'd rather have a table in the main room, or be in the side room when they didn't have a large party table (16) in progress. A much-needed addition to the Oakland restaurant scene.

Wow. This is great addition to the bay area. Walking through the front door we were blown away by the physical space. The owners of this restaurant built a restaurant that you don't often see in the bay area. Our party of four tried almost everything on the menu and each item was outstanding. Their "California" collards, their take on southern collards, was fantastic. The only dish we did not try was the fried chicken. Apparently it is so popular they ran out of it before 7pm. Our waiter told us the chef is so committed to the quality of his chicken that he will only run a limited number of orders through the fryer each night. The good news is they are getting another fryer. I will be back very soon.

We had two "small plate" items - salmon and scallops. The salmon was perfect with generous portions but the scallops lacked imagination. There were two med sized scallops served with garbanzo beans and homeny - I was not impressed. The wine serving was less than generous - it seemed like two ozs. per glass The ceaser and cucumber salads were great - ceaser was served with small fried okra fritters - these were great! For two salads, two glasses of wine each and salmon and scallops the bill was $100!
