“Start early, finish late …” Welcome to Policy Restaurant and Lounge
Our idea for Policy, is to be the first and final stop of the evening.

One of DC’s hottest Restaurant and Lounge, located in the vibrant U Street neighborhood, this upscale diner motif like main floor, Love Dining Room and the airy second floor, the Liberty Lounge, this space extends the sentiment of being free and savvy. Decorated with brilliant chandeliers and art work by Andrew funk and Drew Nussbaum, Policy offers two levels of charm and class in a hip and inviting environment.

The restaurant provides an intimate feel not only for couples but for a group of people catching up. We’ve taken Global Flavors and infused them with American cuisine adding a unique spin.

Policy is one of our favorite restaurants and we continue to bring family and friends back for meals! The menu is always amazing and the atmosphere in the resaurant is energizing and exciting. We have never been disappointed and will continue to frequent Policy for special occasssions or just a normal Sunday brunch.

My BF and I went here on a saturday night. We were seated very quickly, however the waitress was not very attentive to us. My BF had to send his drink back a couple times because he did not like it. The food was nothing great...my chicken was dry and over cooked. The brussel sproats where not cooked enough...def not worth the price.

  • Great food....in a 90's ambience

The food was surprisingly good - the crowd eclectic. Service was fair considering the place was about 70% full on a warm July night. The booths are lit by a single LED "bike light" which was very annoying while eating (solved by placing a napkin over it for the duration). However, they are apparently redesigning which will eliminate the black and red decor, similar to a 90s New York dive bar. Now the food was great - the sliders were awesome (yes, we tried most of them - the Madras curried one being the best received), the skirt steak and corn was very tasty, the short ribs may have been slightly overdone but the Green Papaya Salad was amazing. Overall - food was great and roll on the remodel!!

On a quick family trip to DC with two adult "children" and we wanted somewhere fun and a little off the beaten path and Policy was all that and more. We loved it all- from the specialty drinks to all of the wonderful choices on the menu that we were able to experience and share due to the unique serving style. A definite revisit for us!

Went to Policy for the first time because of a LivingSocial deal. The food and drinks were very good, but I don't think I would have gone if I did not have the LivingSocial deal. The atmosphere was fun and upbeat. Overall I enjoyed myself and my friend ended up buying the LivingSocial deal as well so he could go back.

This was a first time visit to the restaurant. First off, their Mint Julip is fantastic! If you like mint julips, you will love theirs. Had two different types of sliders - both were exceptional in flavor. The green paypaya salad was nice and spicy hot with great flavor. Green bean side and roasted brussels were exceptional. The brussels combo of sweet, tangy and earthy were teriffic. A bit noisy, but overall great. Will definitely go back.

This spot seems to be a neighborhood hangout. We arrived late, 9PM on a Friday night. The bar area was bustling, but we were there to eat. I must say, I didn't think we'd get full on the tapas style menu, but we DID. The sliders are cute and filling. Surprisingly I even enjoyed the lamb sliders. The flank steak was sooo tender & delicious. The drinks are atypical. I fell in love with the Fuego, a tequila type drink. It had a smokey flavor that kinda grew on me. The wait staff was GREAT & friendly. I came here for the first time on a LivingSocial deal. But I'll definitely be back.

Service was very good. Prices are a little steep for the quantity and quality. Ordered several items from the appetizers and entrees. Goat cheese and pear salad was great, beef short-ribs and lamb were also a hit. Other stuff was just ok (quinoa salad, green beans, fish sliders had no flavor, fish and chips was very pedestrian with no unique flare). Dessert was laughable. Ordered creme brulee and it was the smallest serving I have ever seen. 4 spoonfuls. I understand the 'tasting' concept, but that was barely a taste to share with others. I don't think I will be back, but I would recommend it to someone looking for something new and a bit different. It has lots of tough competition from other places in the area though.

When we entered the restaurant we were promptly greeted and quickly seated. Our server, Meredith, was extremely helpful in educating us on the menu. I brought some friends from overseas to dinner here & they loved the variety. Policy was very accommodating to remove all pork products from the dishes. We ended up getting about 8 items for 4 people, and each one was yummy. Favorites were the scallops - 3 scallops, each in its own sauce; shrimp on crispy polenta; and PEI mussels (this was a good size for a "shared plate"). A bit noisy, even though only 4 tables were occupied, but we were in a booth, so we were a bit protected from all the noise. I wouldn't recommend their wines. I tried 2 and they tasted like they'd been open for a while. Go with the beer or mixed drinks.

I had brunch at Policy on Sunday at noon. There was hardly anyone there for some reason, and that was fine by me. My friend I did not have to shout to hear each other. She ordered bottomless mimosas and the tuna tartare. I ordered a juice mix and the steak with eggs and potatoes. All of it was very good. Every part of my meal was cooked just as I ordered it. The potatoes were the real surprise. I don't know how they make them so crispy without being greasy, but they need to keep it up! I would definitely come here again. This is now on my list of favorite places for brunch in DC.

My experience at Policy was very cool. Nice spot, good energetic atmosphere with a good mixed crowd(young and older folks). I had the lamb ribs which was very delicious and my date had the fried hen which she liked. Portions are a bit small, which I think is the point of Policy's menu...to order more than one plate, which is cool. They also honored the request I made for my reservation...very impressive. Solid!

I enjoyed this place on a Friday night. I went with two others and all of us enjoyed our meals. We had the chicken, the shrimp and the ribs. The chicken fly was very juicy and tasty. I enjoyed the shrimps, they were made to perfection. No one complained about anything. I recommend the vignnets for dessert, they were light and fluffy. The creme brulee was not bad but very very tiny portion. The service was prompt, professional and friendly.

The food was amazing (the beignets were delicious - crispy on the outside, warm and soft on the inside, served with a wonderful creme anglaise that was not too sweet; the breakfast skillet was well seasoned without being over-seasoned, the truffle mayonnaise and arugula were a great balance on the breakfast sandwich sliders), the french press coffee and loose-leaf tea were to die for (smooth, flavorful, not bitter), the mimosas were strong, and the bloody mary's (homemade mix) had a delicious kick and were not too thick. Enjoyed our recent dinner at Policy. Very interesting, well-prepared and for the most part, delicious food. The green papaya salad, mussels and short ribs were wonderful. The sauce (cream, broth and Andouille sausage) with the mussels needed more good bread for mopping up, which our server graciously provided. The short ribs -- what can I say----yummmmmy. The fried brie and peach salad and the crab cakes were good but not outstanding. The beignets were a nice finish to the meal with the fantastic French press coffee. The wines recommended by the server were perfect with the food. Just a little disconnect between the overall very nice dining experience and the atmosphere -- sports bar/retro/hip with rap music.

Service was dismal and it wasn't as if the restaurant was crowded. Waited for 30 minutes for food and no one ever checked on us during the wait. When the food did come it was partially cold and had clearly been sitting around. Again- no one checked on us to see if we wanted/needed anything else. We actually had to get up and go to the bar to ask for our check. There are too many places in DC to have a good brunch so Policy either needs to step up it's game or not do brunch.

When we finally arrived to the restaurant after spending 1/2 hr looking for parking we had a great time. The drinks were a heavy on the cranberry, so we switch to wine, and the food was excellent. However when looking for a restaurant to celebrate my boy friend's birthday, one of my requirements was that I needed valet parking. I knew it would be in DC because of another event we had reservations for afterwards, So I selected Policy because Policy advertised, Valet and Street parking. To our surprise, they do NOT OFFER Valet parking so we drove around for 1/2 hr to locate parking. My one complaint is that they need to update their website to indicate STREET PARKING ONLY.

I went to Policy for brunch with some friends. It was okay, but disappointing compared to other establishments in DC - overpriced and the food was unimpressive. Their bloody marys were pretty bad, so I'd recommend the mimosa if you're going for bottomless brunch drinks. I like to my bloody marys spicy, so I like to add hot sauce if they're mild. I had to ask for hot sauce every time they brought a new drink, because they kept giving me a tiny amount in a carafe served on a doily. I guess they were trying to be fancy, but it was just silly and annoying. The server was nice and helpful. Still, you'd be much better off choosing another restaurant for Sunday brunch like the Getaway, Tap & Parlour or the Mad Hatter.

This experience was extremely disappointing. We went for brunch and purchased the bottomless mimosa and bottomless bloody mary. Impossible to get refills. The bloody mary was watery and odd tasting. My tuna tartare was okay. My companion only ate half of her crabs benedict. Couldn't even complain to the waitress because she was literally RUNNING around the restaurant. I have been here for happy hour and was quite pleased with that experience. I don't know if there is new management, or just poor brunch management. If they were having trouble with getting brunch service done, they should have stopped seating people.
