A word from Policy
NOW OPEN FOR BRUNCH ON SUNDAYS

“Start early, finish late …” Welcome to Policy Restaurant and Lounge
Our idea for Policy, is to be the first and final stop of the evening.

One of DC’s hottest Restaurant and Lounge, located in the vibrant U Street neighborhood, this upscale diner motif like main floor, Love Dining Room and the airy second floor, the Liberty Lounge, this space extends the sentiment of being free and savvy. Decorated with brilliant chandeliers and art work by Andrew funk and Drew Nussbaum, Policy offers two levels of charm and class in a hip and inviting environment.

The restaurant provides an intimate feel not only for couples but for a group of people catching up. We’ve taken Global Flavors and infused them with American cuisine adding a unique spin.

This isn't really a restaurant. They have expensive average food at premium prices to keep their liquor license designation for this neighborhood. I would skip dinner and just stand around and look cool upstairs until this "Fadish" spot passes from the scene. The "dining room" is amateurism and loud. It is sort of Rock and Roll dominatrix chic. . . something grownups really shouldn't attempt with someone else's money.

I went for drinks recently and enjoyed the happy hour offerings as well as the food. Note, they have a nice mix of 'foodie' options including crab and mascarpone crepes, a pork belly dish, etc. If you go with other foodies, its more fun;) Only down side is that for a small plate restaurant it's fairly expensive. the average cost of a plate is $11- and the ingredients weren't exotic enough to warrant this increase in comparison to other places. Overall an ok experience, but don't go hungry unless you want to spend a chunk of change on food...

We found our small plates were well prepared. Policy is one of several restaurants in the neighborhood specializing in small plates, and its menu is not distinctly different from that of its competitors'. The dark, red dining room is distinctive, and was probably easier to take on a hot summer day than in the middle of winter. The room gets noisy, particularly as the crowds build after 8 pm.

The space is very well done, the crowd was fun and friendly and most importantly the food was AMAZING! The only flaw was the terrible service. At one point, we didn't see our waiter for over 20 minutes. He got our drink order wrong twice and forgot a few plates and in the middle of the meal we had to go to the bar to get a second glass of wine. Maybe they were understaffed for the night, but the service was some of the worst I have had in DC. Thank goodness the food was some of the best!

There were serious problems with the timing of the service. There were also two errors in the delivery of food. The first being a wrong salad and the second not having a sauce removed from an entree. The restaraunt might consider increasing the number of servers it has. The server did make up for it by finding an umbrella that I could use and that salvaged the experience.

This is possibly one of the worst brunch experiences I ever had. Thankfully, the drag queens were phenomenal! Policy has since ended their relationship with the queen who was hosting it, and I won't be returning. The food was average at best, served buffet style and over-priced. We were one of the first tables seated, but it still took 15 minutes for a server to acknowledge our existence, and literally half an hour before we received any drinks other than water. Maybe dinner here is better, but I'll be staying away from their brunch. On the upside of things, the space is gorgeous. Also, the female bartender who was working seemed to be the only one in the place who had a clue.

Is this a restaurant trying to be a hip martini bar, or a hip martini bar trying to be a restaurant? I had fun, but I feel like there is something missing with this concept. It isn't really one or the other, so I am not sure what they are aiming for. If I went back it would be for drinks. All the dishes are "small plates" but they are really well sized portions, and better be, darnit, since they charge what other restaurants do for an entree. They tell you two plates each plus a side to share, but we couldn't finish everything. I'd prefer a few dollars less each and a little less food. But it is the ambiance and the drink menus that don't seem to mesh well with the food, and the decor is more afterhours nightclub than chic tapas place.

Abiance is a miss! Looks like they were trying just a bit too hard. Food was horrid. The food came out of the kitchen at random time so we did not get to have dinner together. When Iasked the server where the other entrees were he told me that he was not the foodrunner and he only takes the order. This is not a restaurant I would recommend nor will I return.

The "small plates" were just right for our pre theatre dining. The dishes we selected were delicious. It began to get noisy as we ready to leave. All those hard surfaces are not kind in terms of noise control. I will never understand why restaurant owners don't understand that people usually want to converse while they are in a convivial dining atmosphere and design with that in mind. Our server, Sage, was quite good.

Made a reservation for 11:00 a.m. Sunday brunch, but probably didn't need it that day. Policy would be really fun at night or for dinner, but as a daytime restaurant it can feel a bit gloomy and cave-like inside. It was gorgeous outside so I think most people opted for outdoor seating. That said, everything else was great - it was not busy, I got my choice of a table, and the waitstaff were friendly with me while I waited for my friend to arrive. The food was awesome overall - I had the french toast made with brioche, marscapone sauce, and a strawberry-rhubarb compote. My friend's salmon eggs benedict were awesome, and the potatoes and maple sausage were perfect. I will definitely be back!

Overall the food was good and the server was friendly and attentive. Music at 10:30 was way too loud. I appreciate a fun and vibrant scene but if people want to dine they don't want to be screaming over the music. I realize there is a club upstairs, but the restaurant shouldn't feel like one if you want to be viewed as a legitimate DINING option. We were sat 45 minutes after our reservation. I fully understand that seating reservations on time, particularly at 9:00, can only be accomplished if earlier tables finish as scheduled. It's unavoidable that some people sit longer than expected, but that's not our fault. "People are sitting" is not an excuse for anything more than 15-20 min. A nice gesture would have been in order.

Food was good--but the U St neighborhood these days sets a high bar, what with Cork and Vinoteca providing very high quality food at reasonable prices. Policy is fine, but not quite that good. The biggest downside of Policy is the noise level, and the dark interior (fine at night, but makes you fell you just entered a cave if there's any light outside). If you actually want to talk to your dinner companions, not a great choice. If you want to check out a hot spot and signal that you're au courant, the right choice.

While the spotty service at Policy is typical of a newly opened restaurant, the food certainly is not. My friends and I ordered almost one of everything on the menu, and every dish was well prepared and very tasty. The fries and trio of spreads were great to start, and the crab & mascapone crepes were crave-worthy with large chunks of fresh crab throughout. The NY Strip was cooked perfectly to order, and the mahi-mahi was well done as well. The dishes are "a bit larger than typical tapas" and priced accordingly at about $10-$11 a plate. The service staff was friendly, but their sense of urgency and is being traded off for checking and rechecking the accuracy of the order. I'm sure they'll soon be able to be perfectly attentive too.

Decor: Be aware that the place has two floors. The photos I saw on the restaurant's Web site were of the upstairs lounge, which has a cool decor IMO, but we were seated downstairs in the restaurant, where I found the decor unattractive. Service: Our server was competent and attentive, but weird -- unprofessional and a little "too cool." The hostes, however, was very pleasant and professional. It's nice that they have valet parking. Food: Interesting options and tasy food. Are they "small plates" or not? Menu doesn't specify. Asked server when ordering, and she gave a very ambiguous answer. I would say they are, for the most part.

My friend and I had a nice time at Policy. The food was pretty good but the portions were really small. I wish on their website the dishes were listed as being "tapas" so we would have known what to expect. I have to say if you're hungry, this isn't the place for you. Drinks were good but were a bit pricey ($11 eventhough they were listed as being $9 on the website) for a mixed drink and $6 for a beer, a bit much considering the neighborhood. Our waiter and other members of the wait staff were very friendly and attentive to our needs. Next time I go there, I will not go hungry and I'll go to the area upstairs. The music on the second floor was more upbeat (and current) and had a younger clientele (mid 20s-30s).
