A word from MUA
MUA is an eclectic dining, drinking and entertainment spot for all ages in Uptown Oakland.
Enter the 1930's warehouse-era building, pass through a curtain and find yourself at the welcoming bar. Venture beyond and the space opens up to a surprisingly large two story dining area with large communal tables and smaller tables, surrounded by local artwork that constantly changes.
The food is American and Asian comfort food served in small and large plates.
Later in the evenings MUA has DJs along with other surprise events (check the website to see the latest). It's a great place for large parties.

Nice food, interesting space and great service, all undone by the high volume of the pounding dance music. We won't go back because it is unpleasantly loud - even our server found the volume unnecessary and distracting.

We sat upstairs and it was a great view of the place. We shared a few small dishes with my favorite being the short ribs, definitely need to get this every time I go. They can do no wrong with the Brussel sprouts and garlic shrimp.

I've lived in Oakland 8 years and have gone to MUA countless times and always enjoyed it. This last time my guests and I received very bad service and brought it to the attention of the hostess and waiter. The waiter was apologetic but oddly nervous about our complaint. According to him the Management is ruthless and forces the waiters to take any customer care compensations out of their salaries even if it's a kitchen problem. When I asked the hostess to speak with the Owner, who happened to be sitting at the next table having dinner, she said she was busy and wouldn't speak to us. The hostess had the "Manager" come over and she was horribly unprofessional. My guests and I were completely shocked and offended by the whole experience.

We had a great time - food arrived HOT and was delish. Kale salad a disappointment however, was like it had just been defrosted from a frozen state and was clumpy. Artichoke sauce messy, should be served separately. Guest loved the grilled Romaine. Beet salad the best of four starters. Fried chicken and blackened catfish great. Loved the Affagato. Yes, we would go back if in the area. Staff very friendly and accommodating.

Took a date to this place. Environment is very nice and unique. A dj is playing hip hop as you eat. They have a great cocktail selection, we tried three (collins, manhattan, and basil) and they were all good. We ordered tapas style dinner (many small plates). The polenta, garlic prawns and brussel sprouts were all delicious. Sadly, the bbq sauce on the spare ribs was very sweet and didn't seem to go well with the ribs and the artichokes seemed slightly undercooked. The sauce on the artichokes was mediocre as well. Overall though, I'd definitely go back for their extensive, yet simple, menu. 4 star rating.

I have been to Mua a few times and it never fails to be a good time. The food is quite good and the atmosphere is energetic. The place is HUGE so there's nothing intimate about it, but for a group of friends who like good food and don't mind shouting to hear each other the place is outstanding. The outside area is fantastic for eating and drinking, as well. Make reservations because there is always a crowd waiting to get in.

The aesthetic of MUA is best described as artsy and eclectic. The atmosphere was relaxed and very informal. The food was okay. I had the fried chicken. I also tried the collard greens, which had a sweet pickled flavor (I did not enjoy them). The crab cakes were good, as well as the pork wraps and chicken wings (appetizer). Also, the french fries that were served with my entree (substituted for cole slaw) were tasty. And I really enjoyed the flourless chocolate cake. I don't think I'll go for dinner again. However, I would definitely go for drinks and appetizers.

When we walked in the bar was packed and busy! Fortunate for us, two people left so we swiped their seats! Bartender was quick, and informative ( I'm a whiskey drinker, so he helped me pick a new one to try). The restaurant part was packed as well, but we had made reservations to stay after our drinks and have dinner. I highly recommend making reservations, and the service, and food was fantastic to boot! We will be back!

There were a ton of negative reviews on yelp - trust me those people are crazy wrong - everyone was friendly, we got our table with less than 5 min wait on First Friday! Service was spot on with casual friendly attitude. "Small plates" so you get lots of different "tastes" all ofvwhich were fantastic, healthy, California fresh. It is noisy but you can carry on a conversation; raw warehouse building transformed to interesting food/bar scene.

This was my first time at Mua. It definitely lived up to expectation. With a group of five we ere able to order a combination of starters and main course dishes (about 7 dishes total) and share between the group. Each dish was exceptional. The restaurant is a hip happening spot for all ages and the desserts should not be missed. We will definitely be going back!

Loved this place! What a find, too. You would never know what's inside from the outside. I'm sure it's a blast at night. At lunch on Friday, the Chicken Milanese was tender, crisp and moist. Better than fried chicken, maybe even. Flourless almond cake with citrus reduction and perfect vanilla ice cream is an inspired flavor pairing. Highly recommend.

It was my first time there, out celebrating my birthday with a group of friends. We had reservations and even though it was very crowded they were ready for us. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and that helped a lot since there were a lot of words on there we weren't familiar with. It's a little on the pricier side but about average for the neighborhood. We enjoyed everything we ordered from the crab cakes, soup, calamari, toasted salad and roasted brussel sprouts, to the multiple desserts and creative drinks. We will definitely be going back.

Really enjoyed the ambiance, service, music, and friendly people eating there! Our server was wonderful, Kelly, very good with everything! Was please there was no excessive salt use, which is typical of many restaurants. Wine list was only ok (Bordeau ok, Syrah a bit strange; both quite young). Didn't see big, CA wines that seened good except Segasio, and it was bottle only, not by the glass. Mixed drink was GREAT. It was quite fun and will go back. Food was good, tried a lot of things, but not exceptional. Thanks MUA -- "keep on going straight ahead..."

Arrived early for a 6:30 dinner reservation so decided to sit at the bar area. All 5 bartenders took care of folks sitting at the bar and ignored those that are at the smaller tables within the bar area. All we wanted was to get a drink while waiting to be seated. A 30 minute wait for a drink was not a good sign so we left and dined at Pican. My colleagues and I have been here for a lunch and found it to be the best time to visit.

I had Easter dinner with my son and daughter in law. I have reservation for a birthday dinner with friends next weekend. The atmosphere was hip, friendly and artistic. The wood chairs were a bit uncomfortable. The cocktails were imaginative and delicious. The service was excellent with friendly, helpful and knowledgeable servers. The menu was noval and interesting. My son and I had the duck and my daughter in law loves the fried chicken. The appetizers were also excellent and varied. We were too full for dessert but those also looked good. All in all, we had a very nice and fun experience. I highly recommend it.

I wanted to like MUA. It's Hipster Oakland Central. But when it comes down to it, it was literally too loud to have any sort of conversation, and the food was mediocre. It was inventive and there were plenty of options, but nothing a reasonably-abled home cook couldn't handle, and all unextraordinary. Our meal with drinks was $100. I thought it was a cool space, but next time I'll go to Gather.

The restaurant looked like a lot of fun and full of interesting people. I was excited to have dinner there. We showed up for my reservation and the hostess walked our party through the vibrant and interesting restaurant, full of funky art to look at, past all of those interesting people then up the stairs, then around the corner, then around another corner, then all the way to the end of a dark, lonely loft space. I felt like the ugly step cousin at Thanksgiving. So much for having reservations if this is the table they give you. Food and service were great, experience could have been better due to the table location.
