A word from MUA
MUA is an eclectic dining, drinking and entertainment spot for all ages in Uptown Oakland.
Enter the 1930's warehouse-era building, pass through a curtain and find yourself at the welcoming bar. Venture beyond and the space opens up to a surprisingly large two story dining area with large communal tables and smaller tables, surrounded by local artwork that constantly changes.
The food is American and Asian comfort food served in small and large plates.
Later in the evenings MUA has DJs along with other surprise events (check the website to see the latest). It's a great place for large parties.

  • Music too loud!

We love MUA but the last few times we were there for an early dinner (6:30pm) the music was so loud (there was a DJ spinning) that no one could hear anything being said at our table. Including our teenagers! Our ears were ringing after we left the restaurant. OUCH. Not a fun dining experience.

I loved this place the first time I came - a few months ago. Lots of gluten free choices. The arugula salad was fresh and delicious, the pork wraps were ok, but the big disappointment was the brussel sprouts - which I remembered as being delightfully crunchy, caramelized and seasoned just right. This time they were soggy. I'll give them another try sometime, but what happened????

The menu is awesome. There is a lot of variety in terms of type of cuisine, light and heavy dishes, and price. We like choosing a bunch of options across sections of the menu (salads, small plates, entrees) to share as a table. We are glad to have found a new neighborhood spot to go back to regularly!

We went the first time about a year ago. My parents were visiting and my father suggested we go again. Made the reservation via open table and arrived on time. After a few minutes we were seated. Waitress was friendly and provided some good comments. We wanted to try different dishes from our first visit. Food arrived hot and tasty (chicken wings, roasted peppers and calamari for appetizers and lamb shank, steak, fried chiken and slalad for main dishes). Overall we were pleased with our food with the only exception dessert. We ordered mint chip ice cream sandwich that had very little ice cream between two hard cookies ($6.00). Only disappointment of the night.

Eclectic atmosphere and wide variety on a short menu. Good stuff. Recommended by a co-worker of a friend who lives in the area, it didn't dissapoint. The food items we really liked weren't the usual seasonings. The tender ribs are seasoned different, good different, although the kids didn't like them. The NO cheese mac and cheese was awesome. The Duck Confit was outstanding. The Beef Bone Marrow is a rare menu item in any restaurant, give it a try. Great experience.

Mua is my first date get-up. Every first date I have near Oakland I select Mua. Why? Because you just can't go wrong. The bar is always crowded so my date and I are well seen as we pass those thatsettle just for drinks.Seating is always perfect because there is no bad spot in the house. You can see everything from anywhere. The music always flows and tends to mix with my wine and entree and we all dance together as I nibble away. If my date is able to moan and eat at the same time while looking for more then he's happy. Very happy. And that makes me happy. I've eaten just about everything on the menu and I can attest, every dish is amazing. I've never complained and nor have my dates. Mua is perfect and closes late so more time to date.

You can always count on Mua for amazing food and a great drink menu. The service is always great, and the ambiance is fun. My particular favorite is the butternut squash mac & cheese. This time, I had the Salmon, and it was cooked to perfection, seared perfectly with great flavor. I was celebrating my birthday; and as always, it was a great atmosphere. My friends and I had a blast.

Great food. But for someone my age (51) the noise level is so high and can't even hear people at my own table. Makes conversation very hard and unenjoyable to attempt. Will only go back late at night when they are one of the few options open.

The food is wonderful here! It is one of our favorite spots. Now they've added a simple addition to the menu that lists all the food that is, or can be made, vegan/gluten free/etc Note: Mua is a LOUD place. We asked to sit upstairs, which it quieter, but they don't always have it open for dining. On days when we can't deal with loud, we go somewhere else.

It seemed like they were in a bit over their heads trying to accommodate so many large parties on the night we dined. Our main courses were brought out before our starters. We asked to receive the starters first. After receiving the starters, we then waited almost 40 minutes to receive our main courses. Our reservation was at 7, and we didn't finish our main courses until 10 which didn't leave us any time for desert. I won't come again with a large group, but will for a casual dinner with one or two friends.

It's not exactly that this is a five-star restaurant in the way that Camino or Chez Panisse may be, but the food is reliably good, the menu inventive and interesting, the servers funny and competent, and they care about folks with food restrictions -- enough to have a special menu, and invent delicious new gluten-free & vegan offerings. Plus it's "Oakland" at it's best - everyone of every kind & persuasion & age & their kids having a good time.

My husband and I usually walk to mua and sit outside on the patio with our dog. No formal service out there, but always had a great experience ordering at the bar and having the runner deliver our food. Recently, we took some friends for dinner and sat inside. We ordered a lot of food and drinks, which was all delicious. Problem was the annoying food server who was hovering over our table for the entire meal, continuously interrupting our conversations and making us feel rushed? There were other available tables, so I don't understand the rush. At 70 dollars per person, I would expect more courteous and professional service. As always, the support staff was friendly and attentive without being in your face and the food was superb.

Came here for my boyfriend's birthday, reserved a party of 8 on a Saturday night during memorial day weekend. We were seated right away and it was pretty busy. The service was great but the food was amazing. My boyfriend loved the scene and so did the rest of our party. Very classy and tasteful. The staff was great and our food came out relatively quick. The drinks were tasty as well. The hero of this place is the dinner menu and the atmosphere by far. Will definitely dine here again.

I've lived in Oakland 8 years and have gone to MUA countless times and always enjoyed it. This last time my guests and I received very bad service and brought it to the attention of the hostess and waiter. The waiter was apologetic but oddly nervous about our complaint. According to him the Management is ruthless and forces the waiters to take any customer care compensations out of their salaries even if it's a kitchen problem. When I asked the hostess to speak with the Owner, who happened to be sitting at the next table having dinner, she said she was busy and wouldn't speak to us. The hostess had the "Manager" come over and she was horribly unprofessional. My guests and I were completely shocked and offended by the whole experience.

We had a great time - food arrived HOT and was delish. Kale salad a disappointment however, was like it had just been defrosted from a frozen state and was clumpy. Artichoke sauce messy, should be served separately. Guest loved the grilled Romaine. Beet salad the best of four starters. Fried chicken and blackened catfish great. Loved the Affagato. Yes, we would go back if in the area. Staff very friendly and accommodating.

Took a date to this place. Environment is very nice and unique. A dj is playing hip hop as you eat. They have a great cocktail selection, we tried three (collins, manhattan, and basil) and they were all good. We ordered tapas style dinner (many small plates). The polenta, garlic prawns and brussel sprouts were all delicious. Sadly, the bbq sauce on the spare ribs was very sweet and didn't seem to go well with the ribs and the artichokes seemed slightly undercooked. The sauce on the artichokes was mediocre as well. Overall though, I'd definitely go back for their extensive, yet simple, menu. 4 star rating.

I have been to Mua a few times and it never fails to be a good time. The food is quite good and the atmosphere is energetic. The place is HUGE so there's nothing intimate about it, but for a group of friends who like good food and don't mind shouting to hear each other the place is outstanding. The outside area is fantastic for eating and drinking, as well. Make reservations because there is always a crowd waiting to get in.
