A word from MUA
MUA is an eclectic dining, drinking and entertainment spot for all ages in Uptown Oakland.
Enter the 1930's warehouse-era building, pass through a curtain and find yourself at the welcoming bar. Venture beyond and the space opens up to a surprisingly large two story dining area with large communal tables and smaller tables, surrounded by local artwork that constantly changes.
The food is American and Asian comfort food served in small and large plates.
Later in the evenings MUA has DJs along with other surprise events (check the website to see the latest). It's a great place for large parties.

No cheese Mac and cheese is so good and so is the soft shell crab po boy. Everything else is great too but these two items is what brings me back! The ambiance is live so is the music. Great place!

I generally steer clear of noisy restaurants, but MUA is the exception. It's high energy and blasting loud, but the food is delicious and reasonable and it's such a fun scene. Great options for vegetarians and vegans, as well as omnivores. And a fun cocktail list (though at last visit the drinks were small and weak). Always a blast.

Live in sf, but was going to the tears for fears show at the fox and wanted something delicious nearby. Recommended by a friend so we checked it out. Aside from not being marked as seated in opentable and having to dispute this with the restaurant since I was being penalized by OT, it was overall an enjoyable experience. Service was slow for 6:30pm on a Wednesday (perhaps bc we weren't ordering as much as other tables?), but everything was tasty (zesty guacamole, gluten free gougeres, perfectly salted pardon peppers, and grilled romaine Caesar). Enjoyable wine and beer selection also. I'll be back next time in Oakland, but will for sure make sure they properly mark my reservation before being seated.

The ambiance is quite a cool warehouse space with lots of interesting art. The food isn't too shabby, either. The mussels and lamb cheeks in particular were outstanding on this trip but the rest of our food (smoked trout salad, mac & "cheese," 24 hour ribs) hovered in the "good enough" range. I love that they serve Crabbie's Alcoholic Ginger Beer! I keep coming back for that alone.

I liked the vibe of Mua. I did think that the food was okay, but not outstanding. The ambiance was super cool and edgy. I enjoyed my visit. My artichoke was undercooked, the nectarines in my arugula/quinoa salad were on the crunchy-side. Crab cakes were terrific.

This is one of my favorite places in Oakland. I took my 14 year old niece wanted her to experience an urban feel restaurant. She thought the place was REALLY cool! The food is yummy! She ordered a Crab Poor Boy Sandwich and I got the Fried Chicken. I wanted her to try the Brussel Sprouts and the Vegan Mac & Cheese...she loved both side dishes. Cocktails are really good. The vibe in their is awesome. I LOVE the DJ spinning the old school R&B that was a good set that evening.

First time at MUA. Chose MUA because of the proximity to the Paramount Theatre. The restaurant looks small from first look of the outside but is actually quite large. Menu is varied enough to please a variety of tastes. Food was good .... nothing exceptional. Looks like a great place for drinks and appetizers. Getting a glimpse of the plates that were served to other tables, many looked quite appealing. I will try it again.

I was very impressed with the menu and excellent service. Their chicken milanese was the best I can remember eating. The scene is very hip, lots of young professionals and its decor certainly adds to the new bohemian scene in Downtown Oakland. My one big complaint is that it is incredibly noisy!! I could barely hear my dinner mate across the table. Next time, I'll try going there for lunch. If you are looking for an intimate, romantic dinner or even first date, this is not the place! If you want to try some great cocktails, great food, enjoy a boisterous evening with your posse and don't mind yelling while you are eating, you'll have a great time.

Wonderful food - Great place for a vegetarian with so many vegetarian dishes (and not bad for meat eaters too). It is very noisy though (possible to have a conversation but only with occasional shouting). Wine list and drinks are on the pricy side but in line with what other restaurants charge.

I really like Mua but this time it wasn't as great as before. I didn't get my entree until I reminded the waiter I had ordered it - my friend's entree came out on time. And my entree wasn't as good as when I had had it before. My friend's fried chicken was just okay. So I've had better experiences there but I really like it and will return.

This was my third visit to MUA, and I had the best service I've had yet. This wasn't a special occasion...my sister and I were too lazy to cook Saturday night, so we made a last minute reservation. The food was great. Brussel Sprouts and Ribs were the highlights of the night. Another great experience.

Cavernous energetic big room with incredible presence and ambiance. Have eaten here twice and loved it both times with all around great food, drinks, excellent DJ, and an over the top Hip vibe. We ran into a couple of friends at Art Murmur and I called Mua to see if we could add 2 to our party and they accommodated us no problem. This place goes on forever with rooms and mezzanines, and I think it is a true feat that they can keep a place of this scale offering such great food, drinks, and service. Love it!

I took my boyfriend to MUA for his birthday. I wanted to do something really special for him. The restaurant seemed really exciting at first . . . fun ambiance, art on the walls. But the food. The food was really not great. The flavor was okay but the plating was flat and uninspired. The fried items we tried were flabby and soaked in grease, not crispy. All of the flavors were super-rich without a foil to offset that richness. Overall, it made me sad and it gave us both indigestion. I will take him somewhere else next year. :(

Fun place, food was terrible, except for the calamari. Spare ribs dry, steak overpriced and half of it was fat, lamb cheeks recommended but were fatty, little gems salad was sour, duck was very salty. Flourless Chocolate cake dry, bread pudding and fruit cobbler were good. non alcoholic drinks for were overpriced at $7.00 for a glass of strawberry lemonade for my kids. It was 200.00 for my husband and 2 kids to have a very mediocre birthday dinner : (

The service was a little disappointing and the waitress was not friendly or engaging. We ordered the brussel sprouts and the spare ribs as appetizers. The brussel sprouts were overcooked and mushy and the spare ribs were overpowered by the taste of Worcestershire sauce. The food overall was just okay and not worth the price. This was my second time at Mau and I don’t plan on going back. There are too many decent places to go here in the Bay Area.

Well, maybe not as much vegan but vegetarian, tho there are vegan choices. But gluten-free folks can eat happily; the food is delicious and eclectic -- I like the soft-shell crab po'boy, my spouse likes the steak, but you could easily make a great meal from the appetizers and small plates. Also what's a pleasure about MUA is that it's very "Oaklandish" -- everyone shows up; families with kids, parties of 10, lesbian & gay couples & friends, folks of all races & ages; the waiters are friendly and competent. We take our friends from out of town to give them an Oakland flavor.

The starters of grilled artichokes, and a beet/goat cheese salad were very good. The hamburger was excellent, but the fries were not crispy enough. The cocktails and wine were very good. The service was excellent. However, while the music played was acceptable, the loudness played was NOT. It was so loud that many people were "cupping" their ears so they could hear the other people at their table. When I asked several employees about the loudness they said that they had heard this complaint many times, but "the owners likes it this way". The owner can count me out as a customer.

We visited MUA with my niece and her husband for dinner on a Saturday night with a 6:30 reservation. We were seated immediately upstairs where we were told it was less chaotic than downstairs. Thankfully we took the advice and had a nice table. As the entire restaurant is open, the music was a little loud but we could have a conversation. We ordered 4 small plates. I especially liked the calamari and brussel sprouts in browned butter. Also we ordered crab cakes and padron peppers, all very good. The large plates we ordered were also very good, but we especially liked the assortment of small plates. Our next visit will be for small plates and a bottle of wine. Our waiter was attentive even though he was very busy, did not rush us.
