A word from Trax Restaurant & Cafe
Chef/Owner Steven Waxman opened Trax in the restored Ambler train station in 1989, after many years in his family wine business. Chef Waxman’s early career in the wine industry took him across the globe from Napa Valley and Burgundy – sampling fine wines & eating outstanding regional cuisine. Those early culinary experiences coupled with apprenticeships in restaurants along the East Coast motivated him to open his own restaurant, where people could enjoy food as extraordinary as the wines in their private collections. His goal was to prepare a menu that would satisfy the most discriminating palate – his own.

Whenever possible, Chef Waxman gets ingredients from small, local purveyors and farms that he knows he can trust. Some of the herbs and vegetables are even grown in the restaurant’s award-winning garden, which won a “Community Greening Award from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

We hadn't been to Trax in over a year and now I think I remember why... the food was a little bit lackluster and definitely not worth the money. I think we spent around $100 for 2 entrees, 2 appetizers, and a shared dessert - which I think is expensive for a BYOB with average food. The restaurant itself was not booked by any stretch but still got quite noisey. I think it may be another year if ever we do go back.

We say outside on the rear patio, which fronts the SEPTA Regional Rail R5 Line. The trains that noisily rush past every 30 minutes may annoy some, but it creates a truly unique atmosphere. Food is always excellent, creative and fresh. Menu is a nice combination of traditional offerings prepared in different ways, and new combinations.

Good. Prior meals were more noteworthy. The risotto w shrimp was very good, the flounder was rated ok by two in our party;thickness of the filet was noted as too thick. Mac n cheese superb, soup dujour as well. We will be back for sure.

Trax is one of our all-time favorite restaurants; we try to introduce any and all guests to its charms--maybe hoping that if our friends return, they will INSIST that they take us back to that wonderful restaurant by the railroad tracks. We always recommend the lamb, if it is on the menu, any of the salads, any of the fish entrees--The short story is that we have never had a bad meal, a bad server, a bad evening at Trax

Trax is consistently a great dining experience. It's small and intimate, with occasional views of the trains going by. The service is always excellent and food is wonderful. Perfect for a group of friends or a romantic night out. With precious few decent restaurants in the area, Trax is a real gem.

Went for my wife's birthday; I knew the reviews were good, but even so we were pleasantly surprised. Maybe I'm just a sucker for train station restaurants (I miss you Stazis!), but I absolutely loved the atmosphere of the old train station setting although the tables are slightly crowded together and the noise level was definitely elevated. The service was excellent - our waitress paced everything perfectly. The food itself was incredible - well prepared and presented. Trax will be one of our "occasion destinations" going forward.

    CapeGarlicVIP
    Dined on 10/6/2009
Although our dining experience was generally positive, I was disappointed that the restaurant has misrepresented itself on its website. Photographs of wine bottles abound on the site but nowhere is it mentioned that the restaurant is BYOB necessitating a last minute walk to the State Store on the other end of town while the rest of my party ordered. Also, as a vegetarian, I chose Trax because the menu listed Grilled & Roasted Vegetarian Platter as the first entree. It did not appear on the menu provided by our waitress. There was only one waitress working the evening we were there. She was hard-working and efficient but because she was covering the whole dinning room, service was slow though perhaps an understaffed kitchen was the culprit.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 9/26/2009
The Trax Cafe, located in the heart of Ambler, is a true find. The intimate setting of the old stone building with large windows looking is perfect for a romantic dinner for two. The menu selection is small but varied. I view this as a plus, since the chef can focus on a few specialties and really put the care into your meal; which is obviously the case. The food was excellent and was served in perfectly-sized portions. The service was impeccable and all the servers were friendly and accommodating. As a BYOB, the prices were a little on the high side, but having a (delicious) romantic dinner with my wife was worth every penny.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2009

We were seated immediately because it was close to 8 PM and the place was half empty. We shared the warm goat cheese salad which was perfect for two. We both had salmon, cooked to perfection in a flavorful sauce, and served with rice and a vegetable dish that included eggplant, peppers, and some other things that I can't remember. Our server went above and beyond expectations. We were by a window, and an outside light became annoying. Our server explained that the lights were on a timer, and couldn't be turned off. We were disappointed until we saw him outside unscrewing the bulb. Now that's service! The only damper on the experience was the noise. I can't imagine what it would have been like, had there been a full house.

We enjoyed a lovely evening meal at TRAX in the middle of the week. While the service was abit slow, the server was so lovely and so friendly, we didn't care! The menu offered wonderful foods that were familiar and comfortable, but added a "twist" that made them feel "new" and "fun". Great night! We were there for a bit of the evening train traffic, but the noise was actually not a problem. Highly enjoyable - fresh food, pleasant atmosphere and friendly servers!

My wife and I were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and we decided to go out for a quiet dinner together. We both chose Trax. We have been there several times before and always have enjoyed our meal and the service. Their chef, Dewdney Reynolds never disappoints. Their specials are always worth a try and their regular menu is enticing enough to keep us coming back. My red snapper and my wife's salmon were both cooked perfectly! Both meals were accompanied by a delicious array of flavorful side dishes and the portion sizes were just perfect. We finished our meal with an espresso and coffee and one delicious dessert. It was a perfect evening to mark our milestone anniversary. I would highly recommend Trax. It is a neighborhood gem!

Warmly greeted and seated next to a windonw which looks out onto a flowered terrace and the passing of an occassional train....a most pleasant "out in the country" ambience. There were 4 of us and every dinner was perfection...my 3 friends are returning tonight, just 2 days later!!! Reccommend to order dessert first...(the won tons stuffed with rice pudding) or at least leave room for after dinner. Very convenient before going to Act 2 Playhouse or the Ambler Movies.

Dinner was tarnished by loud noise and mediocre food. Everything had Louisiana hot sauce - the shrimp bisque had a dollop, bread was served with oil and hot sauce, etc. Entered restaurant to find everyone drinking wine, yet couldn't order any, its BYOB only. Extremely noisy due to poor acoustics of being an old train station. The echo made the experience quite hard to enjoy. Service was great, food was prompt, but portions were small and nothing to write home about. With a bill of $100 for two with no drinks, this is hardly worth the expense. The menu and signage lured me in suggesting an upscale ambiance and fine dining, but I found neither.
