This was a birthday gift to my husband. Knowing that we both enjoy Japanese cuisine this was a throughly enjoyable evening. When the reservation was made I stated that it was a birthday celebration, very impressed when the staff brought out a cake with candles for him. Class act from start to finish....we will put this on our places to go back to list, Thank you

Despite wonderful service, the food did not meet expectatIons. The courses were limited in thier imaginativity- Of the eight courses, five were a variation of a fish based soup. Most of the fish courses had a strong fishy taste. The wine pairings, while adequate failed to lift the food to a higher level. There was not one standout fish that left me wanting more.

Amazing wait staff. Delicious meal with exceptional wine pairings. The room is tasteful and quiet. We enjoyed dinner conversation without shouting. Some restaurants are too noisy to taste the food. Here we could focus on what we were eating and yet the theatre of dining did not get in the way of conversation. Happily we were at a table insteadof a poorly lit counter where the person seemed disengaged. Unusual for kaiseki. On a normal night this might be exceptional but the price was higher on xmas eve. I am not sure I appreciated the increased value of special ingredients that might account for the price hike. Even for a normal night the menu is $50. more than on their website. Stiff ticket for the 99%.

we had the 6 course meal but after each course, staff would take away the plates very(too) quickly. Literally a second after we cleared our plates. There was a time when I was almost done but not quite - twice, I had to tell them "still working" I felt rushed and restless. It was a Christmas Eve dinner, I wish I could have relaxed and not felt rushed.....

Both friend and I ordered the tasting menu ($85). There are several options to choose among for the "protein" and rice courses. The courses were well timed, spaced out. I never felt rushed. Each course, although it looks quite small on its own, added up to be quite filling by the end. The manager (who started at Daniel) was a lovely presence throughout our meal. He joked with me and my friend, he offered us a 3rd dessert (on him!) when we couldn't make up our minds. I didn't love every single bit of my meal (because I'm picky and dislike veggies) but it was all beautiful and I could see why the chefs thought the flavors went together. A very nice and memorable special occasion meal, but I like choosing (all of) my own food!

Everything from beginning to end was fantastic. We had the tasting menu, and each dish was prepared with such amazing care and visually beatiful. True Japanese cuisine is to be appreciated first with your eyes, and then the taste. Presentation of each course was fantastic, and of course, it was all delicious! All the servers were very attentive, and give you more than enough time to really enjoy the food. We did not feel rushed at all. Elegant dining with high quality food, and warm, welcoming service, very nicely done! Definitely will go back there again, and do recommend others to go!

I'm glad we finally tried Brushstroke - we ordered the tasting menu, with the option for a larger sashimi platter, and it was plenty of food. The chawanmushi was a standout dish. Sashimi was also nice and fresh, although I think next time I would not order the larger portion, only because I was too full to really enjoy the last course. Definitely recommend it if you're a strong eater. It's very, very good Japanese food.

The food was indeed awesome complemented by the excellent service. It is a complicated menu and it would be helpful to have the description written down in front of you - the waiters do tell you but it's rather fast and not easy to follow. It is expensive, especially if you opt for the sake and wines>

Amazing. I had my boyfriends (surprise) birthday dinner there with a large party of 9. We had the $85 tasting menu which was brilliant. They were so accommodating with such a large group (large for NY standards). 6+ stars for the service, it was impeccable. The food was truly an art form. The chef and kitchen staff brought taste to a whole new sensation. Dessert was a bit weird - but I wouldn't change a thing. Personally, I just was happy I was able to try dishes completely unlike anything I've had before. The only complaint I have is that upon arrival the two staff at the front door completely blew the surprise for my boyfriend. We made it SO CLOSE!! Ah well. Other than that I highly recommend it, and I hope to be back soon!

We celebrated a wonderful birthday dinner here. Service was immaculate - attentive, timely and considerate. The tasting offered an array of complex and sumptuous dishes - from the egg custard with black truffles, wagyu prepared two ways, to the Cornish game hen with rice in a deep and savory broth. Compliments to the chefs and service team at Brushstroke.

Three of us sat in the minimalist dining room and were served in a timely manner with a very knowledgable, friendly and attentive wait staff. We had opted for the 5 course tasting with the wine parings for the three of us. We were accommodated in our desire to mix up the dishes somewhat so we could have some variety to share among the three of us. All dishes were tasty and innovative but not overly memorable. The parings were exceptionally well thought out and we were pleasantly surprised but not as surprised as the bill came to well over 700 dollars before any tip. To my mind excessive for what was served.

THIS IS A MASTERPIECE. Over the last few years, we've been here a half dozen times. Service is flawless. Food presentation is gorgeous. One dish in particular, Chawan Mushi, was beyond spectacular. This is a very serious enterprise presented by professionals and done with light hand. Have the 6 course "tasting dinner" and don't choose things with up charges. There is no need to order more. This is a 2 1/2 hour commitment and well worth it. And, as Dale says, it's not expensive compared with flying to Tokyo.

You cannot prepare for the "brushstroke" experience. Although beyond words, I will try to share some insight about what you can expect. A first dish opens an iron gate into an unknown world of flavors and texture. You are now set to expect the unexpectable and you won't be disappointed. The tasting goes crescendo, mixing culinary techniques from Japan and classical ones on extremely carefully chosen premium ingredients: some known, some unknown, some unguessable. Black Oregon truffle and egg custard sounds classical, but the chef transports you beyond a looking glass, in a new dimension filled with mystery and delight. Service is impeccable, and extremely attentive. The sommelier chooses intriguing wines and sakes for a marvelous pairing.

it is a formulaic fare, for those who do not know or dine Japanese it tried to appear authentic but it does not work. Food is extremely low quality, and all the extravagant add ons are offensive. It looked torturous for chefs to keep making packaged meals like standardized production line. One chef broke a large stack of dishes when distracted from routine movement $ 7 for hoji cha at the end of the meal was a real insult. Service is excellent but one cannot help but think that is where all the money goes

I had heard many good things about Brushstroke, and I had tried its French sister restaurant next door Bouley twice already, so I was excited for my dinner at Brushstroke to say the least. Upon entering, Brushstroke struck me as a quiet and serene getaway from the hustle-bustle of New York City. The table settings were simplistic yet refined and patrons can easily view the sushi-making from any corner of the restaurant. My friends and I chose the $85 chef's tasting menu. Each dish was very small, yet the flavors were robust and fresh. My favorite was the first dish with the vegetables and jelly. I thought it was a bit pricey for the amount of food given, however I had a relaxing experience with friends on a Friday night at Brushstroke.

This is about the fifth time we've eaten here and honestly I don't know why we bother going anywhere else! The restaurant is a beautiful mix of wood, glass and air. There are three tasting menus to choose from - we go for the more modest 8 course one! Each dish is beautifully served - our first with a big flower on top - all of then Instagram worthy in their own right. The food is delicious - from mushroom with tofu to shashimi to lobster then salmon and rice - each portion the right size to be satisfying but not overwhelming. It is a memorable experience dining at brushstroke and I look forward to many more visits!
