A word from La Fonda del Sol
La Fonda del Sol translates to “inn of the sun” and was first open from 1960 to the early 1970’s. The visionary “theme” restaurant was hailed as ahead of its time by many critics, with a menu that brought Latin and Spanish cuisine to New York for the first time in a fine dining setting.

Today, 47 years after its inception, La Fonda del Sol provides an unprecedented stage for modern Spanish cuisine in New York. Executive Chef Chris DeLuna reinterprets an expansive selection of dishes from across Spain, with a focus on tapas.

The split-level area consists of a bar room on the ground floor and the main dining room on the upper level, separated by an illuminated glass wall behind the bar. Reservations are accepted for the upstairs, main dining room only. If you have a PROMO CODE, please enter it in the special request box when making your reservation.

My first experience was lunch and the food was great, my workmates (2) were happy with food and service. Last night was another great experience. I don't care what New York Magazine said about LFDS, the food and service were perfect. My dinner mates are triathletes and they were happy there was no high fat in your entrees. I made my reservation through opentable.com and made a special request, your staff made sure everything was perfect. I will definitely be back and let my fellow workmates/friends know about this gem. I also love the fact that the name has history with the former restaurant from 1961-1971 (albiet different).

A few friends and I had seen this restaurant open and were eager to try it out. Two of us arrived on time for our reservation and were seated promptly and greeted by our waiter almost instantly. We had fabulous service with every aspect of our meal, from the somnier to the bus boys clearing our plates. We enjoyed tapas instead of going with a full meal. When we were unsure of what to order our waiter suggested ones that were his favorites. We had some wonderful desserts, too. Everything was quite wonderful. (We ate in the upstairs area, and I noticed that the downstairs bar area was much noisier, more of a bar crowd.)

great food and presentation. weak on the service side, needs more training.. wine list inconsistently more expensive than the food.. not smart for this economy.

I went to La Fonda with friends - we had been to the original and wanted to see the new version. We were pleasantly surprised. Sometimes revisits are awful. The food was very good but best of all was the service. Our waiter (Erin) was a gem. It definitely has my "go back" and "will tell my friends" rating.

How wonderful to find such great service in such a well designed restaurant right next to Grand Central. The fine dining area is up a few steps from the tapas bar, which gives you visibility and light but very little noise. Truly well designed. Staff were charming and attentive. We came early for pre-theatre and were well taken care of.

This is a beautiful venue, however, the food left something to be desired. Too many fried items and not enough lighter more healthful choices. That being said, it is in a great location and is a good place to go for drinks and/or a light dinner after work.

Not like the original La Fonda Del Sol, but quite good. The menu is reasonably straight forward; not as heavily South American as might be expected. The room is attractive and, at least on the night I was there, reasonably quiet.

Great drinks, great location, excellent menu selection but the highlight of this restaurant is their service. You can't beat it. It was what dining out should be. We met friends and spent over 4 hours sitting, drinking and talking and we were treated as if we were friends of the restaurant. Our servers' were extremely attentive and helpful with all our dining selections. We were informed that the portions are on the small side which was valuable when it came to ordering the tapas for the table. It's a new favorite place in Manhattan and with this kind of personality one that will stay!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 3/12/2009
My husband and I are tapas fans and we heard that La Fonda del Sol had a tapas bar. We found a few of the tapas to be lacking a certain spanish style. We also feel that when a tapa is going to be served as a cold salad it should be indicated on the menu which was not the case for the octopus. We expected a hot pulpo and we got a cold octopus salad with not to much octopus in the salad. Most of the tapas were quite good.

Though the environment and decor were top notch. I believe the menu still needs to be worked on. I felt that some of the dishes had good concepts but the presentation and balancing of the construction needs some fine tuning. I also think that one should not be overwhelmed by petit fours at the end of dinner. But I enjoyed the experience and will return to see the advancements of the chef.

    NYCeaterVIP

If you reserve for lunch, be aware that there is a dining room and a front cafe. Reservations automatically direct you to the dining room, which is VERY overpriced for lunch. For a fairly priced lunch meal, I recommend eating in the cafe. For dinner, the cafe is noisy and crowded due to the vibrant after work bar scene, so the dining room is a better choice for dinner.

We had a FABULOUS lunch here on Saturday, feasting on the tapas menu with a great bottle of Spanish wine. We enjoyed 6 tapas items and 2 desserts, our favorites being the shrimp that were eaten like soft shell crabs, the shaved salad, and the cinnamon beignet-like dessert and the orange creme brulee, although really it was all great! The service was wonderful and each staff member we interacted with were helpful and engaged. We are generally one time vistors to restaurants as there are so many to try, but this is one we will return to.

Dining experience was good - the greeting at the front was great, having a drink at the bar while waiting for the rest of my party to arrive was pleasant (good bartenders, she had a "special drink" that turned out to be great), decor is nice & the food was really good. We were celebrating a birthday, which I had informed them of beforehand & they went all out to make it special. Only thing I didn't like is that you have to order from two separate menus depending on which part of the restaurant you sit in. If you are in the lower bar area (which also has tables), you can order tapas, but not full meals. If you sit up in the main restaurant, you can order from the dinner menu, but cannot order any tapas. What if you want it all?
