A word from A16 - San Francisco
A16 is a restaurant and wine bar bringing the delicious and hospitable traditions of lively Campania to San Francisco. The chic, rustic/modernist venue is named after the motorway that transverses
the South of Italy. The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.

Been coming to A16 for years and each and every time the food and service is outstanding! Whether you simply want an authentic neopolitan pizza and a salad or wish to enjoy the fine talents of the entire staff in the kitchen, you will be supremely satisfied. And the wine: the knowledge Shelly holds in her head about all the wines they offer in addition to remembering what YOU liked at your last visit to A16 rounds out the unparalled experience. But always leave room for dessert! The chocolate budino should not be missed! Clearly I can not say enough great things about this restaurant but I can not leave out the wonderful staff. You always see the same friendly faces which says alot about a restaurant! By far our favorite in all of SF!

super friendly and likeable service, just poorly executed. appetizers arrived faster than a big mac, and before the sommelier (who was very knowlegable and was clearly swamped; note to mgmt - might want to staff up?) even got to our table to recommend a wine. incredible wine list tho. overall the food was very good, but not one that will leave a lasting impression. that being said, i'm going back (gonna try and find an off-peak time if that is possible?) for the wood-fired pizza which looked amazing.

It's good. Not quite as good as everyone else seems to think, but I think the Marina crowd doesn't get to other parts of the city and region much. Still, the grilled calamari with pickled chiles was truly remarkable.

My friend and I both feel that our experience at A16 may have been more positive if not for the condescending waitress who "wrote us off" once she realized we were not going to order the $114.00 wine she suggested. That experience after the impatient, curt hostess who showed us to the table was disappointing. After a long day of touring and a long walk to the restaurant, we were looking forward to a memorable experience. Our waitress assisting us with our wine choices, menu selections, showing interest in us (all things we saw her doing with the table next to us)would have made us feel more welcome. The next day Slanted Door did all these things and we spent considerably more, recommended it to fellow travellers and have fond memories.

I liked the restaurant. The only negative thing was that the hostess didn´t give give us the right information which lead to one of us waiting in the bar for 30 minutes and two of us waiting at the table for 30 minutes. Other than that the service was very good. The waitress knew the product. Regarding the food Im sure the people who eat meat would rate it much higher for me who eat vegetables and fish there was not to many options on the meny hence the rating.

The appetizers stole the show: Roasted Delta asparagus with walnut crema and pecorino tartufo,Cecamariti "husband-blinder" zuppa of peas, corona and ceci beans, lentils, pancetta and pecorino, and a special roasted vegetables with almonds. The pizzas are nice, the pasta good, and the ability to choose sides with the main dish is terrific. A special Easter dessert was outstanding and not the typical Italian fare. Ask to sit in the back patio if you like less noise.

I took friends from Ohio, both had lived in San Francisco over 20 years ago. They loved it, my friend Jim said it was the best meal he'd had in a very long time. They would definitely recommend to friends coming to San Francisco. Service was great. I have lived in SF for years and had only eaten at the bar so this was special getting a table. I liked serving sizes and getting a side dish with your entree, we had gelato for desert which was a perfect size after a big meal. I recently was in Venice, Italy so this was a nice memory of Northern Italian cuisine. Am looking forward to coming back and will recommend to friends.

Great reputation but slightly overrated. There isn't any effort put into the presentation. The pasta is thrown in a bowl and the salumi comes a la carte - it looks like it was slabbed onto the plate without any accompaniments. They should also offer more variety - there is only 1 fish on the menu and it had run out when I was there.

I had the "lamb three ways" special for Easter. It appeared that that choice may have been more popular than they expected. The meat was tough and greasy (in my opinion not cooked slowly enough -- it's hard to toughen a lamb chop). There are a few too many tables. The seating was very crowded, and it was uncomfortable being so close to other parties on either side of our table.

I saw some very good reviews for this place but came out with an average rating for the food. We had the pork chop entrée and the roasted beef entrée and the flavor wasn't there for us. Great place, but feels more like a great neighborhood place than a destination. The Sommelier was amazing and helped us pick out something (one of the best bottles we've had in a restaurant in recent memory) in our range. I'd go back if I was in the neighborhood and wanted some wine and a heavy snack. Apps were great, pizza nice, but the pastas failed to keep the high pace set by everything else. A little pricey. Server was fun.

The food was ok but nothing like I'd heard (I had escarole & sunchoke salad and funghi pizza and my husband had a tuna app. and a pasta dish with pork). The service, however, was the unfriendlist I've encountered in 5 years of living in San Francisco. The hostess was ok but our waitress was simply uninterested and unfriendly. My husband and I gave a less than 20% tip for the first time we can remember. We will not go back. When we want pizza with good atmosphere and good service we'll go to Little Star.

The bartenders were also quite attentive to people who weren't quite "bellied up to the bar". The food was outstanding. The pizzas are the best outside of Italy! Our waiter was professional but not stuffy. Quite personable. The sommelier, Shelly, was VERY helpful not to mention beautiful. She has a very nice wine inventory and isn't a stereotypical wine snob. She is very willing to work with you. We will be back.

I would actually rate the food between outstanding & very good. Our group of 6 was very impressed with everything. The place isn't particulary conducive to large groups but I'm sure they will do their best to accomodate - which I'm guessing means getting the earliest possible seating time - our original res was for 4 people @ 6pm but in order to add 2 more they bumped us down to 5:30. No biggie as it worked out well. We were in the back 'patio' so the noise wasn't too bad but inside it was quite raucous - in a good way. The wine list was the main reason we chose A16 - all southern Italy - and we loved it. We will definitely be back to try more wines and some different things from the menu.

I guess reservations don't really mean anything being that we had to wait an additional 30 minutes past our reservation time. The server appeared offended when I questioned the level of char on my side order of potatoes. I received a sarcastic explanation about how they cook them on 700 degree logs... I can appreciate the technique, but if a customer questions it, I should at least be offered a new batch that hasn't been completely cremated.
