A word from Seasonal Restaurant and Weinbar
Over the years together, Wolfgang Ban and Eduard Frauneder have perfected their own modern take on Austrian cuisine - one which combines traditional techniques, contemporary innovations, and updates to some of their favorite childhood dishes. The team behind the prestigious private catering group, Elderberry Catering, chefs Ban and Frauneder, together with a small group of investors, have opened Seasonal Restaurant & Weinbar, their first venture open to the public. Their goal is to provide elegant home-cooking in a sleek but welcoming setting.

The chefs at Seasonal pride themselves on maintaining the utmost quality in their cuisine, and therefore, consistent with its name, the kitchen uses only the freshest seasonal ingredients. The visual presentation of each plate is the final step in the process, and the chefs have ensured that the look of each plate matches the refinement of the food itself and the décor, creating an unforgettable dining experience.

We went to Seasonal based on the good reviews, the 3 course lunch special for $29 and our desire to try a different cuisine. We were pleased on all accounts and look forward to our next visit. Please note the portions served were small though quite flavorful: poached egg with lobster, consommé with a semolina dumpling for starters: veal cheeks with noodles, Veal Cutlet, apple strudel and Sacher Torte and a glass of Austrian Gruner Veltliner made for a delightful meal.

My choice (beef filet in oxtail consomee) was not the best choice, but my co-diners were satisfied with their choices of wiener schnitzel and goulash. It was a satisfactory experience overall, and I would certainly visit the restaurant again.

We've dined at Seasonal many times, given our predilection for Austrian food and the restaurant's convenient midtown location, and our latest lunch there confirmed the reason we continue to return. The prix fixe lunch menu offers a perfect selection of classic Austrian dishes prepared with modern flair, accompanied by excellent bread (along with addictive cheese spreads -- including delicious Liptauer, for those in the know). There is a terrific selection of Austrian (and other) wines by the glass. This is not heavy, starchy, bland fare, but a combination of flavorful appetizers, entrees, and desserts that will satisfy palates beyond those only seeking to relive a memorable meal in Vienna. And the lunch is a great bargain, too.

3 courses for 29 at lunch--what a great deal on SUCH good food. And it's austrian, so it's very filling. You will leave feeling full! And really, everything was just so good. I can't even recommend anything over others because I loved it all. The server explained each dish to us when it was brought out, which was helpful as I had forgotten exactly what I had ordered by my entree and dessert. Go try it!

We were looking for an after-theatre dinner on the West Side, and we found this Michelin-starred listing for Austrian. Not really what I had set out for (who ever looks for Austrian cuisine?), but we decided to try it. G A great choice. The food was sort of familiar but different and very, very good. A trout with pickled-pickled apple garnish. A smoked-fish appetizer with frozen gin? And the service was deferential, with attention but not interruptions. And the wine steward really knew his wines; take his advice. We'll be back.

My parents were from Vienna, Austria. the most special meal in the house was Wiener Schnitzel. Mama prepared it VERY well. Seasonal is as good or even better. They are as good as any Austrian Restaurant in Austria. And the Lingonberries aka Preiselberren along with cucumber salad is excellent. The service was knowledgeable and professional. And the wine list is most special and also unusual for the number and variety of excellent Austrian wines. We go to many fine restaurants in NY, Seasonal is always among them

We have eaten several times at Seasonal. Everything, the food, service, ambiance, noise level has been always excellent except for our last visit Wednesday. The food, while prepared as usual, was cold for both myself and my husband. I hope this was a one-time oversight.

The food here is excellent. It's a gourmet version of Austrian food, given a beautiful presentation. My heritage is Hungarian, and I've traveled to Austria, and eaten wonderful food there, many times. I also cook a more rustic version of this at home. My only complaint? The portions are small. Be sure to order appetizers and some sides (they're small too) with dinner, or you'll go home hungry. Convivial atmosphere, but quiet enough to have a conversation.

We had superb food here - great duck breast, very flavorful, lots of fat, crispy skin, light, tasty wiener schnitzel, delicious bread. But we were disappointed with the supposed Black Forest Cake - it turned out to be a parfait version of a Black Forest cake - everything was in mush form. The side vegetables for our entrees were all mushy as well. We were all craving something crisp. I wish the waiter had warned us, when we ordered "Black Forest Cake" that it was not a cake - it was a series of creamy flavors. The restaurant is quiet and elegant; the service is efficient. It's great to be able to have a quiet conversation.

Went for lunch based on location and positive Zagat review. Food was good. However, some menu items were very small in portion. The real downer was the very small $4 cup of coffee, which came with no refills. Paid another $4 per for refills. Left us feeling a bit ripped off. Nothing special about the ambience. Don't expect generosity, but cheap is not appreciated. Wouldn't recommend based on our one experience. Plenty of better options in the area for about the same price.

We try to dine at Seasonal at least once whenever we visit New York because we love its take on Austrian food. This time we used it for our wedding anniversary dinner and had as enjoyable an experience as we expected. From the appetizers through dessert everything was just fine. The complimentary glass of dessert wine was a highly appreciated gesture. The serving staff was highly competent and friendly, and we particularly enjoyed our conversation with the young woman from Alabama.

When we walked in the Saturday after Christmas for lunch at 1:15 pm and only two other tables were occupied, we almost left thinking this place can not be as good as the reviews we had read on Open Table. We were glad we stayed as for the most part the reviews were correct. The food was innovative and very good and the service was attentive and professional. The Wiener Schniezel was nothing special however. Kind of dry and the breading did not adhere to the meat. But all in all very good. More diners filed in while we were there, so I guess New Yorkers eat their lunches fashionably late.

  • This was our fourth or fifth

This was our fourth or fifth time dining at Seasonal. We love the food and the quiet atmosphere. The pork belly appetizer was outstanding, very rich and flavorful. The tafelspitz was like a pot au feu, with three toppings to add on your own. The broth was deeply flavorful, but the meat was slightly overcooked for my taste. Unlike many other restaurants, we did not find the food to be overly salty. The most surprising item was the Schwartzvelder Kirschtorte; instead of the traditional cake, it was layered like a trifle, with cake, whipped cream and cherries on the bottom and a thick layer of warm chocolate pudding-like sauce on top. Unexpected and very good! The service was generally very good, but we had some mix ups with our order.

Maybe as an European I'm not used to the speed of the US, but 3 courses in below 60 minutes was too fast. Would have appreciated to have another 10-15 minutes between the courses, but this is really the only critic point to add. The food was very good, as well the variety of wines to chose from. Ambient is very nice and the service very focused on the guests.

Hoping to find variety in a city with an overabundance of Italian and steakhouse restaurants we had high hopes for Seasonal. Pretty presentation of small portions in the appetizer and entrée categories. Meats were fattier than expected, sides were good but a bit on the salty side. Desserts were large but rather unoriginal. Having spent time in Austria and Germany, the food here missed the mark.

This is not our first time to Seasonal and every experience (be it lunch or dinner) has been perfection -- excellent. The food is of the finest quality and cooked to perfection. The wait staff is efficient and pleasant. Presentation is very nice. On occasion the chef/part owner will walk through the restaurant (which is not too large) looking at what is going on. It is reassuring to see the interest taken by management. On occasion we have had dinner at Seasonal before a concert or play. They have accommodated our time constraints easily. This is a Viennese restaurant of perfection (there goes that word again).

In the past three or four years, I have probably been to Seasonal over 30 times. I had lunch at Seasonal again today, and as usual, it was fantastic! It was quiet, shockingly empty, but the food is still the best high quality food for its price range (if not simply the best, period!). I'm returning again on Monday because, yes, it is just that good. And fyi - to put this review in context, I am very particular and have tried nearly every high end restaurant in the city (most of which I give far less flatering reviews).
