A word from Scarlet Oak Tavern
We are located on Hingham's historic Main Street in a 250-year old colonial house that has been thoroughly restored and updated by the award-winning Niemitz Design Group. Our cuisine, led by Executive Chef Stephen Sherman, centers around great steaks and the freshest seafood, although we also offer contemporary versions of classic American comfort food. Our philosophy is that good service is never intimidating service; and that honest, freshly-prepared food can often be more of a luxury than something you can't pronounce.

The food is just not good. Not tasty, no attention to detail, bland, unmemorable. Even the bloody Marys were tasteless. The waiter was sweet, but inept. The décor is gorgeous. A real new England vibe. I can't imagine how this place will stand the test of time, sadly.

We enjoyed the decor- simple and not overdone. Everyone in our party enjoyed their food. All the men had a steak entree and each seemed quite happy with their choice. My daughter and I had swordfish which was very good. Our server was friendly and prompt. She forgot the anchovies for my husband's salad but quickly remedied the situation when it was brought to her attention. Ambiance - much too noisy for my taste. At times I felt as though I needed to shout to be heard. Other members of my party also commented about the noise. Great place for a lively conversation- not so much for a quiet, romantic dinner.

The food was delicious and everything was prepared perfectly. I didn't appreciate the additional charge for sauces and asparagus (and the asparagus was HUGE and much less tasty that the smaller stalks). It was definitely pricey, but overall an excellent meal.

The atmosphere at Scarlet Oak was great and perfect for a romantic date night. The food was good, but not as great as I expected it to be for the prices they charge. But the server was very knowledgeable and gave us some nice wine suggestions. Also, the dessert tarte we ordered was extremely tiny and for the $8 it costs, I wouldn't recommend ordering it.

While the food was very tasty, on a Friday night for a dinner out with friends, the bar is very busy and got quite loud, bleeding into the dining room. One of my party is hard of hearing, making conversation difficult. Our server was a bit sales-y, pushing certain appetizers and more rounds of drinks. She reminded me of how I was as a server when I had not dined out enough to realize what a diner needs. However, the setting itself, without bar noise, is quite lovely with some nicely thought out details.

Oak Tavern was incredibly noisy - too noisy if you're in the mood for a romantic dinner. The place was very busy and it is obviously very popular. The appetizers (clam chowder and mussels) were excellent, but the main dishes (steak tips and the potato crushed haddock) were poor at best. Especially when you consider the price of the entrees. At this price level I expect to be wowed. We went because we received a gift certificate, and will not be going back any time soon as the experience while not horrible, was not memorable.

The Scarlet Tavern is a beautiful restaurant, whether you choose to dine in the pub, at the bar or in the formal dining room. The brunch menu had enough choices for all tastes. The waiter was very attentive, but not intrusive. I have eaten there several times and I am always eager to recommend it to others. I find the environment comfortable enough to eat lunch in the pub by myself, if I am on my way to a shopping outing around lunchtime.

Our experience at the Scarlet Oak Tavern was wonderful from start to finish. We had a booking for 12 and were surprised by a private room on arrival. The room was the perfect size for our party and it allowed privacy and freedom and truly made a special occasion very special indeed. Our service and food was fantastic and our server was very accommodating and did not rush us at all, despite the fact that the restaurant appeared to be very busy. We dined for 3 1/2 hours without a single complication! All were happy with their drinks, starters and meals! We will most certainly be back!
