A la Maison is a great concept in a great location and space -- a charming French bistro amid the shops of Ardmore, offering fine French cuisine. Unfortunately, I always leave there a bit disappointed, and Valentine's Day was no exception. The food was fine, but the service was horrid. The waiter -- when he bothered to stop by -- always seemed rushed and disinterested in us or the food, and had no ability to pronounce the French offerings, putting in doubt the authenticity of the entire affair. Only at the end of the meal, when we asked, were we told of the complimentary champagne and wine, which were part of the fixed price menu (which no one told us about when we made the reservation). We were offered the same amuse buche (sp?) twice

We went for the cassoulet that is served every Tuesday during the cold winter months. It was delicious as was the pear and goat cheese tart and the mousse truffle appetizers. All pastries are prepared on site and the cheesecake, unusual for a French restaurant, was to die for. Being a BYOB, the entire magnificent meal was very reasonable. The decor is a comfortable country French that is not overdone. I have already recommended it to several friends and we will definitely return.

We made a last-minute reservation for 2 for Saturday night. True to form, this restaurant always honors special table requests, even though our reservation for last-minute. The food was perfectly prepared, delicious, inventive, service was excellent, attentive not overly intrusive. The ambiance - low-level lighting is warm and comfy on a cold night - made for a romantic dinner. Nice.

. . . but not on New Year's eve. My wife and I have gone to dinner here many, many times before and we've always loved it, but we made the mistake of going there on a holiday prix fix menu night. In our experience, restaurants tend to bring their "B games" on nights like this, so I'm not sure why we were so surprised that A la Maison would do likewise. Nevertheless, we left there a little disappointed in our meals.

Our first time at A La Maison for New Year's - have attended other prix fixe events here, and they have always been great. The food was excellent. The one problem, a big one, was that the wait staff brought all the courses too fast. For a minute I thought they were trying to get our table of 4 out the door in an hour, and this for a 5-course meal. Once we got to the main entree, they let us slow down... they also were clearing the table before all diners were done, and we had to ask them not to. Next time we attend a prix fixe here, we will make our preference concerning pacing between courses clear at the outset. I think it was just being busy on New Year's Eve, and the kitchen was kicking stuff out. Fast.

We were rushed the entire evening. When you are out on a holiday with friends you want to socialize. This year we were rushed for our order. We had to ask the waiter for additional time to make a meal decision. We arrived at 6:00 PM for a table of 4 and were out at 8:40 PM. Around, 8:20 PM the hostess casually came buy the table glancing at our party. About 7-8 minutes later she again returned with the same gestures. We were not sure what the issue was, then about 5 additional minutes later she was back. This time the hostess didn't just walk by but stopped and stared at us. If there was a time restriction this year we should have been informed. The shame is that the food was good but the rushed service will keep us from returning.

The Moulles Frites are still the best around, but the rest of the food is not what it used to be. We've been going since it opened and then last few visits have been sub par. The fish always seems to be salmon and rainbow trout neither of which are very good and haven't changed in years. The space is very cool and convenient but the food need a fresh start.

The Bistro was a warm and welcoming place on a cold winter day. My friend and I had lunch there and were very pleased with the whole experience. My Salade Poulet was one of the best I've ever had--high quality white meat of chicken in a creamy tarragon dressing with grapes and walnuts. Delicate, a good sized portion, really memorable. I'm still thinking about how good it was. My friend had the daily quiche special and said it was delicious. She'd eaten there several times before and was anxious to show me. It's definitely a gem in Ardmore and worth walking 5 or 10 minutes from Suburban Square for a sunny, charming spot, excellent service and a welcome break. The only French restaurant worth its sel on the Main Line... Highlights are the changing selection of pâtés, the charcuterie plate which includes a selection of them, along with hard to find duck rillettes, saucissons and three cheeses. The onion soup is among the best in the area. This time, we ordered two specials : sweetbreads as the entrée to our meal and lamb shank as the main dish. Both were excellent. A BYOB policy is another good reason to try this charming French resto. Our only issue: the ceiling of this room is sooooo high that it takes away from the coziness. Perhaps the owner would consider lowering it with fabric or panels?

The entree specials were numerous on the menu but when ordering, many were not available or limited. Had a lovely dinner with my mom-only two negatives were she ordered crab cakes and said they tasted like cod and beet salad used to have fried goat cheese which was awesome but salad still good with crumbled goat cheese. I had the salmon with lentils-have been trying salmon again after not eating it for five years and it was delicious with crispy skin and all. Our waitress Roseanne was great! So think about bringing back the fried goat cheese! We went early so noise level was fine

A La Maison has been a favorite local spot for us for years. That, however, has changed. I suppose the rent has gone up, so $18 for three tiny specks of cheese is correct from their perspective. Corroborating that idea is $36 for two small crabcakes that were a special that evening. And, while I'm complaining about prices, I wasn't happy with the diner-quality rendition of Coq Au Vin. Maybe we'll eventually chalk it up to an off night for them, but that'll take a while.

The service (Danielle? et al) was outstanding: pleasant, informative an attending. Started with a pate' assortment which I found flavorful, authentic. My poulet champions en croute (a special) was outstanding (crust crisp and light), birthday boy had the Beef Bourguignon which melted on your mouth and my wife's salmon (another special) was amazing. Overall, what was served was really good French cuisine. For desert: Profiteroles!!! I must say that the main dining room could use some improvements to the decor but it did not detract from the great dining experience. We'll be back!
