The portion and food quality was surprisingly fair for a restaurant that enjoyed a much higher reputation and rating. I ordered the steak frites and got six bite size pieces of chewy meat and it was served on a plate with french fries that were soggy from the over use of au juice. I was tempted to send it back but I was pressed for time.

They changed the menu and not in a good way. We understand that food and energy prices have increased; however, we would rather see prices increased and the quality maintained. Unfortunately, the opposite has happened at here. Their terrific steak and eggs has been replaced by a sad, bistro version of chicken-fried steak and eggs. Additionally, no butter or jam were brought to the table for the toast. They had to be requested. Furthermore, the name of the item is Alsacienne Fried-Steak and Eggs with Ground Black Pepper Bechamel Sauce. As written, it leads one to believe the Bechamel will appear on the eggs. It should read Alsacienne Fried-Steak with Ground Black Pepper Bechamel Sauce and Eggs. It should also note the steak is breaded.

I have had the pleasure of dining at Aquitaine Bis in Chestnut Hill for both lunch and dinner many, many times. It is a very special place with superior service, ambience, great food, decor, you name it. It is a very unique place in every way, especially for dinner for two. Feels very like an upscale French Bistro without the smoke and the accents. I love it and consider it a guaranteed wonderful place to share lunch or dinner year-round. Plus, easy parking in the lot in front. And, AB is coming, so I hear, to Legacy Place in Dedham!!! I also love Open Table, by the way. Great idea, super service, so easy. Thanks, Susan

The steak frites is reason enough to return to this neighborhood bistro. The hanger steak is perfectly done, and the jus seasons the fries and watercress salad wonderfully. The mussels are also particularly good. We return again and again.

Particularly considering it is located in a suburban strip mall, Aquitaine Bis attracts an eclectic crowd that makes for good people watching. (The couple at the next table sent two bottles of wine back.) The food is reliably good, and the service is patient (see above) and non-pretentious.

There was definitely something going on that was not normal and the Host was doing his best to keep things under control. The waiter took our order for drinks (coffee and juice) about 20 minutes after we were seated and it was another 10 minutes until he brought it. We were seated for 70 minutes before our food order was taken and it was another35 minutes before the food came - we all ordered the same thing! Other tables seemed to be having similar experiences.

Although the food was, as always, very good, and the service was better than I've experienced during lunch at Aquitaine bis, Saturday night dinner was quite the Chestnut Hill scene, and reminded me why I so dislike dining out on Saturday nights! (This is no reflection on the restaurant, which handled the crowd quite well, but the tables at Aquitaine bis are spaced as closely as those in any urban restaurant, and the bar and waiting area cannot accommodate all of the people waiting for tables, so things can feel a bit crowded.)

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 3/23/2008
Overall, the food was pretty decent. But I wasn't very impressed with the service. Our server was the bartender - which was a bit disconcerting, as it was Easter Brunch. I think it would have been in the restaurant's best interest to have more wait staff on hand. The food came out in a very reasonable amount of time, but it was the little things that took the longest: cream for the coffee; getting the check; the length of time it took to take our orders, etc. The waitress/bartender was not very attentive. And that's the impression that I left with.

    1) Please don't ever change the Steak Frites. 2) The broth of the mussels appetizers was awesome. 3) My whole table loved, loved, the chocolate mousse. Please keep it on the menu. 4) One problem--price. We spent (including tax) $155 for three people on three entrees, the mussels app., one glass of wine, one Coke, two coffees and two desserts. We can't afford that. Its our favorite restaurant but we can't go there except for special occasions or when my mother in law is in town. There are other French restaurants in Boston that very good and more reasonably priced. Otherwise, its a wonderful meal.

We have enjoyed Aquitaine Bis for some years, for lunch, many dinners and a few after-BSO concert desserts. The seating is a little close, but depending on those at the near tables and the time of the reservation, it can be and usually is reasonably quiet, as it was on the 21st. The drop in the dollar is already affecting the wine prices, but the mid-level wines are excellent; we may be investigating the less expensive ones in the future.

The salad and the potage were both tasty and visually appealing and served at the proper temperature. The entrees' portions were on the small size and the eye of the round sandwich was served cold. The cod entree's portion was very small and was not lightly breaded. The frites were perfect. The lemon pound cake desert was served burnt. Being down one server the service was slow. Also, the website stated that lunch was until two p.m. but the lunch period was actually until three p.m. I would have perfered a later seating. The main entrees did not have much eye appeal as no garnises were utilized. This is a nice lunch shop but the atmsophere is not overly exciting. This restaurant has ample parking available at no cost.
