Disappointment would describe my last experience. My first visit was fantastic, so I brought my husband this time and everything went wrong from start to finish. I arrived at 1 pm, and was not seated until 1:15 - many other patrons that arrived after me were seated before me. Service was extremely slow....then the food: pizza arrived stone-cold. There was a 40 minute wait between first and second course. Most people downtown are going back to work - this is unacceptable. After complaining to our waiter, our meal arrived. We had to request dessert and the bill at the same time, as we had been at the restaurant for over 90 minutes. Oh, and they ran out of the pavlova and substituted cheesecake without so much as consulting us.

The dishes that my wife and I enjoyed were crafted very creatively. There is a lot of original thinking in the kitchen and that creates a reason to return. The wine list is interesting, with a good selection of British Columbia wines, including interesting new producers.

The tables are placed too close to one another for my liking ... even in the Alberni room [aka "The Fishbowl"]. I understand that the restaurant needs to maximize the use of the space. Perhaps when the terrace is opened I may find that spot more to my liking. After all, I personally prefer to dine al fresco whenever possible.

This was my thirth visit to Market and once to the bar side: I like the simple decor and the elegance of the hotel . I have eaten at Jean-George in New York wich was fabulous ... so I do expect the same in Vancouver ... but we are short change ... The dishes that I had were uneven in quality and preparation ... The service last evening was also uneven ,from the bussing help to the server there was missing a continuity ; for example the young lady who was passing that big basket of bread ( noting special... go to West and lurn was a bascket of bread should be, and home wisk butter...)arrive with three left, for a table of four and took for ever to come back with the last bread ... lack of training from the management . work to do !

    OpenTable Diner Since 2007
    Dined on 3/25/2009
I've eaten at Market for dinner month and found it enjoyable. The service was good and the sommelier even complemented on our wine choice. The letdown for lunch was that service was super slow. We had the 2 plates plus dessert for $28 and though it was good value for the money, I felt that the service was sacrificed. Perhpas due to the private room booking next to our table, since the fuss was certainly all about them. We finished our first course within 15 mins, and waited 15 for our next course to come. Again, we finished in 20, but the dessert took about 20 mins to be brought to the table. We told the server that we needed to leave soon, and asked for, and PAID the check, and dessert had yet to arrive. Lunch took 95 mins total.

Lovely attentive service. Very good food, though I was somewhat disappointed that we were seated in the cafe area rather than the main dining room. The cafe area has tall glass windows which provide nice light but do produce a bit of a chill once it's dark. Nice layout overall with good division of the different dining areas.

The first time I ate at the hotel I was in the lobby bar. The 50 minute menu took so long I had to leave without dessert - the hotel said "that's a shame"... no apology, no discount, nothing. The second time at MARKET the servers placed me in one part of the restaurant and my guest in another. Only when I decided to leave after waiting for 30 mins sis we finally bump into each other and work out what had happened. Food fantastic... service inspired by Fawlty Towers.

Great food and nice dining room. Very innovative menu and presentation is awesome. Bar is not a great place to meet with more than 1 or 2 other people - and while room is nice, bar service is poor. Entrance to bathrooms is in a busy service corridor where servers are constantly going in and out of service area/kitchen... ran into people with trays twice and almost collided.... Dining staff are trying hard -but much work is needed to put this restaurant into the stunning category as far as impeccable service.

Tasting menu was excellent; only one dish (a foie gras creme brule) didn't work well because the jelly accompaniment completely overwhelmed the main act. Room is a bit bland and style is well-lit and very open (not intimate). Room was lively and busy, as was the lounge. Wine list contained a few interesting choices but was a disappointment overall for a restaurant in this part of the market, with a very odd format. Service was attentive and the wine guy was both helpful and engaged.

Small menu selection. Bread is hard like a rock, the only way to tear open the bread is to stab it with the knife. Our table must be the first table to order a bottle of wine because the server have to look for a wine opener. Our food were fine nothing special or spectacular about it. Dessert were sliding across the plate while the server attempt to place the dessert on the table.

I was not distracted by anything at all and in turn had a great conversation over lunch with my good friend. I look forward to having lunch or dinner there in the future. The food was quite enjoyable as well. Unfortunately, the chardonnay that my dining companion was looking forward to was out of stock, IRONY Chardonnay, but that will propel us to try once again. Kudos, to the professionalism and the quality of this dining experience.

The food was amazing. I was blown away. The service there needs A LOT of work. As a five star restaurant, I should not need to wait for 10 minutes for a server to attend to us and need to wave to them to get my attention. They were always looking down on the floor or spaced out. They were all friendly and knowledgeable about the food which was great. Everything on the menu was absolutely amazing. I wasn't too fond of the restaurant manager. He needs to loosen up a bit. I know its a busy restaurant, but you don't need to show the customers your stress level and the pressure you're under. It's not the way to go. I felt like he was rushing us and wanting to boot us out of the restaurant. Overall, I would go back for the food.
