Our waitress was superb. Polite, knowledgeable, obviously enjoys what she does. Made the meal extra special. The food was excellent and we enjoyed the wine tasting as well as the Tasting menu. Enjoyed experiencing new foods and wine, all prepared well and presentation was done correctly. Our dining experience lasted two plus hours and we felt as if we were there only an hour. Never lagging for attention and never rushed, all the servers and wait staff were excellent. They seemed to genuinely enjoy their tasks. Enjoyed the ambiance and location. Recommend without reservation.

An extraordinarily beautiful restaurant and setting. The food was mostly exceptionally good - but there were some real lapses - especially in over-salting the oil poached cod (or was it halibut) - that was nearly inedible - and the lamb loin. The service was very good. The fresh smelts stood out as an exceptional dish.

North Pond is one of the finest dining experiences in the city, and the use of local flora and fauna in their dishes makes it very unique. The taste combinations in a single dish might be described as eclectic. 3 or 4 distinct and strong flavors being present on every bite is not unusual. A wonderful and warm dining experience, thoroughly enjoyable year round for lunch, dinner, or brunch.

This is one of the best restaurants that we have eaten at in years, bar none!!! Can't say enough about the food and wine and the wait staff - our waitress was more than terrific and very knowledgeable. To prove my point my husband tipped her more than 20% she was that good. We will certainly make this our first stop when next we return to Chicago.

Overall- I am sorry we were all disappointed in our return to NPCafe. Our first courses were very good and the salads OK...not as good as first. However the main entrees were very, very disappointing. (Rib eye and Squab) The meat was tough and fatty - a bad cut. Would probably not return for this price point for dinner- table of 4 with wine over $600USD. The seating area near the windows was extremely loud and difficult to hear guests at a table of 4. Music also played too loud which contributes to issue. Service was spotty- everyone was very, very nice but not in tune with guests- i.e. cutting in during inappropriate conversation, not waiting for break - service seemed not as refined or sophisicated as in the past, seemed rushed.

I have to hand it to North Pond, they outdid themselves. I would say this anyway, but this particular night, the restaurant was operating on little to no power. The dining room was lit by candles and a handful of muted overhead lights; the kitchen staff was preparing plates by Coleman lanterns. We were told upon entering that we were 1) welcome to stay despite the circumstances or 2) try other locations such as Avec, Blackbird, etc. They were willing to make a phone call for us if we so chose. However, being my husband's birthday, he wanted to stay. And I'm glad we did. The chef and waitstaff were more than accommodating, providing us complimentary starters and drinks for enduring the madness. But it was anything but maddening. Lovely!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 3/15/2008
My wife and I both ordered the seasonal tasting with the wine pairing. The service was great and the waiter was even kind enough to give us a glass of oregon pinot noir instead of the usual wine pairing for one of the courses because we asked. The courses however pretty much turned out disappointing except for one, the ravioli. The first course, the sweet shrimp was gummy, the tuna flavorless, the fennel was washed out and tasteless, and the crab was fishy tasting. the second course, the "fluke" according to the menu which the server said was halibut was overdone and unevenly seasoned. the elk loin course, the puree was cold and the cocao reduction didn't pair well with the elk. The last course, the souffle was like gummy scrambled eggs.

Dinner was outstanding!!! I commented that I had not had a wonderful meal like that in a very long time. My only complaint is that I don't like being seated at tables where the next couple is less than a foot away. It takes away from the dining experience with my spouse but this is not a unique set up with North Pond. Would like to see a larger wine list as well. We're anxious to return.

The chef's seasonal tasting and wine pairing were excellent. Each course was very well balanced and the ingredients all complimented each other. Every course was better than it sounded! In addition to the five courses on the tasting menu, we were served an amuse and two additional sweet courses, pre and post desert. We also received an additional pouring of sparkling wine with the amuse. Our server Dawn, had an amazing understanding of the seasonal menu ingredients, and wine pairings. This was a unique and exceptional experience that surpassed my expectations. You must do the seasonal chef's tasting and pairing to truly experience what they are capable of.
